Is it possible to make a game genie for the TG-16/ PC Engine?
I thought with all these people working on homebrew titles, I would ask.
-
It's very possible but I doubt anyone would take it on...
-
I always loathed these game genies- the only codes worth a damn are the ones that unlock hidden graphics and functions. Invincibility codes and the like are for teething babies with zero gaming skills. Plus it's common knowledge that those things mess up a decent number of carts.
-
I prefer unlimited lives over unlimited energy. I like to have SOME challenge, or maybe for RPG's, when there's a code for instant leveling up for every battle you complete, incase a game get's frusterating with the level grind.
-
It would probably look like one of those Purple diving boards haha. If someone were to make one nowadays, it could be like a rom and would be loaded up using one of the flash cards.

Ummm, no they don't.

Must have been a rumor spreading through Queens then as I've heard this many times growing up :x
-
I dont know how they could actually mess up a cart...unless by way of physical damage to the cardedge due to the wrong sized connector being used.
-
Perhaps even Nintendo had that rumor swirling around- I know they were none too happy about the game genie.

That is highly likely, considering they were real sharks themselves back then (pun unintentional). They like to slander anything that would be considered competition...that's why we never got a Gamepark release over here...Nintendo spread bullshit about the handheld because it would be in direct competition with the GBA.

Indeed; Tototek has cheat codes listed for a few games for use with their flash cart.

It didn't damage the games, it put stress on the shitty system connectors.
"Exacerbating the problem was Nintendo’s choice of materials; the slot connector that the cartridge was actually inserted into was highly prone to corrosion.[34] Add-on peripherals like the popular Game Genie cheat cartridge tended to further exacerbate this problem by bending the front-loading mechanism during gameplay.[35]"

The advent of items like the Game Genie caused logistical problems with all those old contests they used to run for high scores and such. If there's a readily available device that allows anyone to cheese their score or beat games with ease, then the integrity of those sorts of contests relying on mail-in photos was pretty much nil.
-
If I recall correctly, they changed the rules for the contests post game-genie: you had to include the system in the picture, along with the screen.
-
I remember (this is anecdotal I guess), that a contest entry of mine where I sent in the end game screen to... Ducktales (I think?) to Nintendo power was considered invalid because of the recent GG rule changes.
There was a lawsuit apparently:

They found for Galoob. Interesting that Sega actually gave the one for their system their seal of approval.
