EDIT 11.22.10: .pdf and .tif files are now available for download at:
PDF - http://www.mediafire.com/?gv5i1xusbplquiw
TIF - http://www.mediafire.com/?3uu3644bll30t5c
Thanks to Necromancer for the hosting!
Some minor changes have also been made to the insert; mainly changing the "HCD" code from the disc to the more common "TGXCD" code from the manual and cleaning up the Hudson Bee.

---------------
I recently found myself motivated to obtain a decent Got insert for my CD case.
After being unable to find a copy of this version--http://i17.ebayimg.com/04/i/000/e4/cf/4336_1.JPG--I went looking for Joe Redifer's mock-up and discovered the link for both it and the "snort blo" edition were broken.
Around this time, I started to realize that I don't really like any of the inserts that I've seen. I don't know about you guys, but Bonk and Bomberman are already well-represented on my shelf. Everyone knows the disc has four games on it. I wanted something just for Gate of Thunder, something that looks good next to Lords of Thunder, so I got off my ass and made one.
Elements were used from a number of other inserts, including: Lot, Cotton, Shadow of the Beast and the PCE version of Got. A google image search and some tedious cropping provided most of the images. I made no mention of the Bonk games but listed the Bomberman code because that's actually useful.
This is a draft. I haven't been able to print it yet and I'd like to get any feedback y'all might have. If anything is choppy, pixelated, or sucks, let me know. For example, there's a fair amount of black space at the top-right I don't know what to do with and I'm not sure if the story font will be legible in print (the text is taken from the manual).
Finally, is someone interested in hosting it? Jpegs suck and photobucket links don't stick around forever. I can email a hi-res .tiff or whatever if someone wants to host it.
Without further ado:
(edit: old version)

I'll host it :D

Well, I aligned some of the text and made the painting bigger, then I went to Kinkos and printed it. It looks great.
I'll host it :D
Great, PM me your email. I'll fix a few more small things and then send it over.

ah, sorry i didn't post feeders sooner (aka before you printed).
if you ever plan on doing another print run, then perhaps this suggestion may be something you might consider addressing - the font you chose for the synopsis doesn't quite fit with the rest of the package design, and even more so the "spirit" and context of the game itself. i'd suggest you use something less calligraphy-like. the font probably shouldn't be serifed, either.
other than that...
holy snit! this is one rad insert you've busted out!
i'll definitely be printing myself one whenever you cats make it available for the world to pilfer (even if you don't change the font - however, that would be icing).
(btw, very slick with the bman code toward the bottom :D )
-
Shoot, I just made more updates, but that's a good point about the font. It was the closest I could find to the LoT font.
Here's the new version, higher-up the calligraphy scale I'm afraid but I needed something that stood out more from the black background. I'll look into some other, more metal, fonts.
other changes...
Black text additions on bottom were too dark when printed, I added a little grey.
Red and white text too dark, adjustments made.
The ship, space station, and painting were also a little dark and I brought them out some more.

Might also wanna correct the typos in the text. :D

Hey, I don't write the Engrish, I just pay the fine if I change the text...

really nice  and agree on the Push for just the Gate of Thunder title, "3 In 1" or the 3 games listed on the spine would look weak, & adding the mention to the hidden bomberman is a really nice touch man!!! will be using this bad boy for sure!!! big thanks :D
Also for any future needs of fonts try here… www.dafont.com (http://www.dafont.com/) friendly to both PC & Mac and free for personal use.
have the NEC font :D http://www.dafont.com/nec.font

Thanks for the links, but I just finished another version and I'm going to call it done. I noticed all of the other SCDs (besides LoT) have pretty straight fonts, so I did the same.

back on topic both look great, now is the "SUPER cdrom2" on the spine a scan or was created/vector?
-
thanks a ton for the share, and great work.
i'll be printing this out and using it a.s.a.p.

There was another fan made GoT insert on here but it was not created by Joe. It was really basic looking too.
-
I sent the file Bonknuts he'll probably have it up in a nicer format at www.pcedev.net (http://www.pcedev.net/) sooner or later. I don't know how good home printers are these days but I was really impressed with the incredible quality Kinkos was able to pull off on glossy paper and would recommend paying them a buck rather than doing it at home.
Thanks everyone for the input and feedback. I had never done much with photoshop before and I'm glad it turned out OK. If I have to use a magnetic lasso again anytime soon I'm going to shoot myself.

Scan from LoT.

I printed mine out on my HP Deskjet 970Cse printer. It always outputs great results. You just have to make sure your orignal scan is a high enough resolution to begin with (don't shrink it). My covers also always live in an uncompressed format like TIFF or PSD. I never make JPEGs out of them for printing. My Gate of Thunder insert is 2356 x 1841. Print that out at the slowest, highest quality possible on some good paper (though not so thick that it can't fold) and you'll have something that would be better and have a higher resolution than a real insert.
-
That's awesome, Vest! It looks especially sexy in it's jewel case while standing next to Lords ;) .
-
Nicely done, vestcoat. I look forward to replacing my plain jane insert with your non-ghetto version.
-
Awesome! I need to print that out! Now I just need one for my copy of Ys I & II... :-k
I wrote a description for a GOT back insert a long time ago, hoping someone would make one (that looked professional). And now there actually is one!
Thank you very much!
-
Thanks guys. :D

There's a fuzzy jpeg at crazybanana.tk but it's missing the yellow bar. Did the back insert change over time for the non-pack-in version?
-
Bonknuts: check your PM. My emails were bounced back.
-
Back in town now (could access the site). I'll set you up with access to the site.

Great, thanks a lot!

This is a really well put together insert. If I ever get tha game again, I'll be useing it. I love the Bomberman on the bix too.
-
Damn. Very, very nice. Most impressive. 8)

I recently printed this insert for my Gate of Thunder jewel case and when I was done, I noticed that the spine labels where it says "Super CD Rom2 Gate of Thunder" on each side are going in the same direction causing one to be upside-down when in the jewel case. The Left Side Spine should say "Super CD Rom2 Gate of Thunder" on the bottom to top and the Right Side Spine should go from the top to bottom.
Whoever made the Dungeon Explorer II insert also made the same mistake.
Does anyone have a link to the 'snort blo' version? I couldn't find that one.

The spines are supposed to be oriented in the same direction; almost all other games follow this format. Exile: Wicked Phenomenon is the only exception that I can think of, though there's likely others.

The thread it originated in has dead pic links, but if you ask Mr. Redifer nicely (and maybe send him an eightball), he might reupload it.
-
It is already uploaded, I just have to redirect the link. What was the URL of the original link? Just replace pixelcraze.film-tech.com with www.joeredifer.com (http://www.joeredifer.com/) and it should work.

Interesting. I just looked and the spine labels of all U.S. SCD games, with the exception of Exile 2, go in the same direction while all standard CD games are reversed on one side. Looks like you need to buy some more SCD games! :D

I must have only looked at the regular CD ROM titles and thought that the spines were correctly made. However; my copy of "Buster Bros." has an upside-down spine as well as all of my Super CD Rom titles.
Thanks for re-posting the snort blo insert!
-
haha… nice Necro-man!!! thats funny shit!! :P
-
*Bump*
updated image and new links in first post.
-
This is awesome. I'm printing it out as we speak. :)
-
I never can print these things out well. They always come out it some funny scale.
-
I think I had to shrink this one down 1% for it to fit properly in the CD case. Then it fit perfectly!
-
Awesome!! How did I overlook this? Printed out and in the case now. Thanks!!
-
Glad you guys like it!

I didn't have a decent printer back when I made this and I just took the .tif file down to kinkos on a CD-r and paid them a dollar for each print on nice glossy paper. The size was fine, a hair on the small side actually.
-
Perfect :-)

Would anyone know where to get inserts like this for other games? I would love one for ys 1+2 and one for cosmic fantasy 2
-
You could make your own, which is what Joe and I did, or you could request a scan of the real thing since those games had 'em. Some other site has a cover design project (http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?cat_id=42) for putting TG16 games in DVD cases (pretty weak, imo). Our member Sparky here sells sticker sets for all of the domestic Turbochips, plus Ys, the System Card, and a few oddballs: https://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=5150.0
-
I'm going to look around for a scan of them somewhere. I might try to adapt some from the cover project, but you're right about them being weak in the TG16 department. The Nintendo ones are great though. I'm about to make a batch for some N64 games. If not I'll try to get someone here to scan a copy. I printed this one and it looks great; thanks for making it! Now I just need to buy the game that goes with it haha.
-
they all have different CD codes .. you better print this off and stick on ebay, now there are 3 variations to collect, collectors will go crazy ;)
