How do you guys feel about this game? Like it, hate it?
I was thinking about picking up a copy but I read that its just re-hash of Super Adventure Island for the Super Nintendo. Is this true?
-
I really love this game. Its like wonderboy from sms but better. I would recommend it to you.
-
Completely untrue.
Its awesome because its a rehash of Wonderboy/Adventure Island.
I'm not a huge fan of Super Adventure Island because of how much they changed the game.
-
It's an OK game at best. I still need the manual for it, though (I'd be happy to trade the cardboard box and plastic tray).
I like Super Adventure Island better since I feel it controls better, is all around more interesting and has (by far) better music.

Like Black Tiger said, completely untrue.
Super Adventure Island shares very little in common with NAI other than name and hero.
New Adventure Island is much more a remake or "remix" of the game Wonderboy. Many of the same level cues are present, although the graphics have been hugely improved and many new things added.
Since I'm a big fan of the original Wonderboy and Wonderboy series in general, I'm a big fan of New Adventure Island. Unlike Joe, I feel NAI is the better game (perhaps because I'm partial to the original Wonderboy), although I'll admit Super Adventure Island has the better soundtrack.
-
how ones couldn't love that game?
but i also prefere "takahashi meijin no chouboukenjima", coz yuzos music is the absolute hit in there!
-
New Adventure Island is a completely different game than Adventure Island/Wonder Boy. It's more like a sequel. However it is its own entity, not a remake.
-
Most important of all, NAI has cutting edge mood altering Mode 7 effects at the beginning of each stage.
-
And that is what makes it truly worth owning.

For me, the fist shaking intro is what makes it worth owning.

It's my favorite Adventure Island game (which is one of my favorite series) and it's --easily -- my favorite TurboGrafx game. Everything about it is sublime: the graphics, the music, the level design, and the atmosphere. With one exception (Cadash), it's the only TG game I can beat again and again without ever getting bored. I enjoy it so much that I've spent hours mapping out all the secrets just for fun.
And, best of all, between every world, Master Higgens performs a dance number with animal friends. AWESOME.
My only criticism is that the bosses are really, really easy (except for -- IIRC -- the level 5 boss who took a few tries before I figured out his pattern), and it takes awhile until the difficulty starts picking up (maybe around world 3 or so). However, the levels start getting pretty tricky towards the end, especially the last world, but ESPECIALLY the second to last level.

this is completely untrue. those two games are as different as super mario world is different to yoshis island.

Hahaha, same here actually! You know I didn't even know that scene existed until I saw the POWER UP promo video you sent me. I swear that promo makes Turbo games look so awesome, even the crappiest ones like Falcon!

After seeing Falcon and Gunboat in that promo, I figured that they must've used footage from PC versions(looked way better than I remembered). But it still intrigued me enough to fire them up again to see how close the 3D was to the video. :P
-
I had to do the same thing! Gunboat's 3D is actually pretty impressive.
-
not sure if i mentioned this before but a few years back, i asked takahashi meijin why wonderboy and adventure island are so similar and he told me this story (follow the link)

are you the guy in the interview? do you work for what? :)
-
Yeah, that's George.
And yeah, I'm always posting that link. :D

What exactly is Master Higgins a "master" of? Eating?

He's a master of being awesome.

sadly that meijin didn't explain where this ugly us-name came from.
@nat: so what does george do?
-
Fist shaking!
I so want to make a video of me with a cut-out arm vibrating back and forth as it raises and/or lowers on the screen. It would be a pointless video, so it'd have to be part of a bigger parody of something.

Why don't you recreate the entire the entire NAI intro in live action'ish?

Confusing 6502s and Z80s, and thinking the PCE contains the latter!
-
the 'master higgins' thing for the us version was just the us side's creation for the localization as 'meijin' (literaly : famous person) wouldn't make any sense. no one in the states knew of takahashi at the time. of course, naming the character 'master higgins' doesn't do much for us either. i personally thought it was kind of funny because the name higgins reminded me of a character on magnum p.i. (whom my friend looked like [we called him higgins also]) and that was funny enough for me. as for why 'master'...maybe because he's a good skateboarder?
al i do for hudson is get some information and write features for them. i'm not a full time employee or anything like that. i've gotten to meet several people from both the japan and us side things. usually, it's pretty fun.
-
Master Higgens was the perfect choice for the character's name. I would like to meet the person who made that decision and shake their hand.

Thanks for posting that interview ,
I want to pick up NAI , it looks really good from the videos I've found . Much better then Super AI ,
-
"Master Higgins" is definitely one of the sweetest names ever for a video game character.
-
I agree, Master Higgins is a great name. Who knows whatever he was a master in, the name just has a catchy ring to it.
-
I think the master is a title like mr. or somthing. Although he may be a master bater
-
Maybe he's a master over his wife.
-
He shows her who's boss with his shaky fist!
-
All hell breaks loose in the Higgins household when there isn't any meat on the table by the time the master gets home.
-
master farker
-
Although he may be a master bater
Finally someone said it !
I didn't want to be the one to break the news to you guys ,
-
i also waited patiently. i wonder if that image of him with a clenched fist is the full image.
-
Well, I just watched Super Adventure Island on youtube and just by watching the video I have to stick behind NAI on this one. NAI is perfection - SAI is not.
