I've never got around to playing snatcher and it's time I gave it a peep. Anyone know of the existence of an english patch or if they may be one in development anywhere?
while I'm on the cyberpunk/digital comic subject, I'd like to give the patched bubblegum crash a try too but I don't have a tototek card and I'm not keen on emulation. did anyone ever find away to boot hu-card roms from a cd? I think i remember someone explaining to me why that wasn't possible but the details escape me.

There is a way, but all the memory calls in the HuCard ROM need to be converted to the memory addresses of the CD-ROM work RAM. So heavy editing of the ROM would be required for it to run.
I think that's the gist of it, anyway.

The guys who are working on the Policenauts translation for Playstation were saying how they were interested in translating the PCE SCD version of Snatcher. One guy went and wrote down all the spoken voice parts from the Sega CD version, but I'm not sure if anything has happened beyond that.

i have played the sega cd version of snatcher but i would like to be able to play the PCE version.there is some differences between the two,at least where i have managed to hobble up to on the PCE version.

Yeah, you get to see some corpse breasts and a 14 year old girl showering.
It totally changes the experience, it's really not even the same game. I hope a patch gets released soon!

I DO hope a patch gets released soon. Playing the PCE version after playing the Sega CD version gives a different, unique view on the game. The music itself makes it quite a different experience. Nothing major, but it's nice.

I dunno, the MSX one is pretty good, and the SCC music is really nice. It's Konami, using their special soundchip at its finest... :)

By far? I don't want to get in an argument over which versions best (seen way to many of these) but both version are very close to each other and many even prefer the Sega CD version.

Seriously, I liked Policenauts better then Snatcher *gasp*, not that I'm saying Snatcher isn't worth playing, they both are, just Policenauts is the better option in my opinion (though I know some people would strongly disagree with me).
I even wrote a huge guide on Junker HQ a wile back on how to get it patched and running.

Play Snatcher on SGCD and Policenauts translated on PS1.
I have played Snatcher on SGCD and Duo side by side. I cant say Duo is a better game, just localized differently. Like different Konami characters in a bar, and the more mature scenes. But honestly the SGCD has good voice acting for the time and is a great version.

A translated version of PCE Snatcher would be cool and I don't mind if the Sega-CD script is used as a base and touched up, but I'd hate to have the terrible Sega-CD acting used. When the Sega-CD version was anounced, I had a specific idea in mind of what the worst possible dubbing would be like and described it to friends. Then I rented the Sega-CD version and it turned out exactly as I feared.
I don't think that a translated a PCE version is pointless because of the Sega-CD port, but I personally am not interested in the Sega-CD port being slapped onto the PCE version.
The PCE and Sega-CD versions are at least slightly different in every scene and very different in many scenes.

For one I don't own a sega cd (don't plan on getting a genesis and sega cd unless its an xeye), for two I rather play the game as it was intended, not a censored version. Yeah, I would burn it anyway for the pce, but I guy can hope if there was a translation that someone would press it. ^^

Use emulation. That's how I played it.

I have no idea why people care so much over the censorship in the Sega CD version.
The only thing they changed violence wise was when a dogs stomach gets ripped open and its organs are pulsating, in the Sega CD version they removed the pulsating bit, you still see all the gore just not animated.
They also censored some mild nudity but again nothing to even care about. Aka now when you kill that female Snatcher its top doesn't fall off and you don't see anything during a certain shower scene (she was 14 in the PCE version, changed to 18 in SCD).
Essentially the only people that would be upset over this are 12 year old boys or people that have some sort of mental disorder when it comes to removing something from the original source.

It isn't so much about getting the game translated, its about how VERY little we have seen in the fan sub community for the PCE. I would think this would be a good starting point. As I have stated before, its great we got a few fan translated games and I'm thankful for that, BUT only a dozen for a 20 year old system whereas we literally have over 200 for the snes is a bit insane.

That's not at all what I was getting at. You seem to be under the false impression that the Sega and PCE versions are virtually identical, with the only changes being stuff that would appeal to those that giggle at fart jokes.

Learn to program for the Turbob. Failing that google 'superhucard' and check these forums for a discussion of its limitations (small roms only to fit within the CD's RAM and many do not work 100%).

If you are just trying to burn downloaded isos, that's your first problem.
There aren't "programs" to make HuCards work off of a CD, you have to do real actual programming and essentially reprogram each game to a certain extent. There aren't many people who are dying to have roms play off of a CD, only a bunch of people who think it would be neat and would appreciate the effort.
I think that any real effort to get roms on CD to work would be best spent getting only Magical Chase Turbo and PCE to work. Anything else would be bonus to most people.

I'm trying to say that its not worth waiting for someone to translate the PCE version to get the so called “full experience” on your first play through.
The Sega CD version is by no means a lousy version of Snatcher and is in full fledged English right this very second! So BigusSchmuck, go and pirate the game and emulate it on your PC with Kega Fusion, you won’t be disappointed :wink:

Since a have a little experience with his, I can share some info. Disassembler for one. A emulator with a decent debugger for two (more important than the disassembler by far). A good level of knowledge (low level) about the PCE system, hucards, and the CD system along with the system cards. Some games can be hacked fairly easy by tracking done a few opcodes and rerouting them to BRK opcodes as a software INT call (it's the minimal amount of hacking method). That assumes the game fits in CD ram. If the game is too large, then it gets rather advanced real quick. You'll need to step through the game and really understand a lot of the underlying funtionaly, sub routines, structure, etc. Then, if it's possible from the structure/layout, you attempt to brake the game up into levels and assets (which will need to be hacked for new pointer/address locations). And finally adding a hook for when the player 'passes' or such, load from the CD the next build of the game (which is the core game + a different level). You have no source code, so a lot of work is figuring out the games structure/data/routines/logic. The rest is the easier part. There are rom hackers out there that do exactly this kind of work. It takes strong will and a good amount of patience, and a lot of time.
I was one of three that did the translation project of Bubblegum Crash (Dave Shadoff dumped the text, Matt translated it, I did the rom-hacking/compression/print routine/text insertion). I expanded the rom size to fit the replacement text back in, because I had no plans for a conversion to SuperCD. So I didn't care about the rom size per se (went from a 4megabit rom to a 6megabit rom). Though I haven't looked at the game in years, it might be possible to hack it run via SCD and AC memory. The pointers to the text can easily be relocated to AC memory, as well as the font data. But I'm definitely not going to do this. I loved the old Bubblegum Crisis/Crash series (didn't care for the new one/remake), but to be honest... the game isn't that great. So it's not worth my time to do all that work (especially now) when someone could just as easily play it on an emulator or flashcard.
