Title: What "crappy" games that everyone else seems to hate do you love to play?
Post by: Zeon on June 30, 2008, 06:37:22 PM
Well just as the title says, state any and all games for any console, handheld, pc, or any other gaming capable device that are regarded as "crap" by most but you love to play.
As of right now the first game that comes to mind is Double Dungeons. I know even when we got the game back in 90 something my dad and brother hated it, but I just couldn't seem to get enough of it, I dunno why really.
So what about everyone else? Please share your favorite "crap" games.

Creature Shock: I believe IGN said "The only thing shocking about this game was that it was actually made" Sewer Shark: I play the 3DO version at home and I play Sega CD version via my PSP when on the go. Star Blade: It's the CD game that wants to be an LD. The game streams the polygons from a datatrack which is basically a CBR or constant bitrate stream, then other more complex video data like large ships and explosions are pre-rendered as video. Why is it so much like a LD game? Maybe because there is are dual LD variants of it which existed for public play! It's a very fun rail shooter though and your pilot actually tells you where and how he is going to fly, which is wonderful for knowing how to aim next.

I started a similar thread a while back that no longer exists. I didn't have "crappy" as a requirement though and I wouldn't call Double Dungeons crappy.
I can't think of any games I'd actually label crappy that I also love to play, but here are some that are unpopular to at least some people but I still get enjoyment out of one way or another-
Night Creatures Shadow Man -even the Playstation version JJ & Jeff Wardner Halo 2 -multiplayer Gladiator Donkey Kong 3 Super Mario Bros 2 aka The Lost Levels Deadly Towers Keith Courage Space Adventure Cobra Daytona USA Saturn -not the CCE or whatever Kung Fu Kid House of the Dead Saturn Doom 32X Ys SMS Space Hawk INTV Lucienne's Quest Mystara/Blazing Heroes

In that same vein:
Bonk 3 - Most consider it inferior to the other two, but not this cowboy. Grand Theft Auto (all of 'em) Pac-Man (2600) - I didn't care how different it was from the arcade; I still loved it.

the Virtual On series. Fighting game players hate it because of its nonstandard control scheme, FPS players hate it because of auto-targeting, and both refuse to acknowledge that it's even in their genre. I think it's one of the best arcade games ever made. (though some of the console ports have sucked.)
Earthbound. Screw what the Final Fanboys have to say, Earthbound is the best RPG for the SNES. While I've yet to encounter someone who says it's crap, the game went over like a lead balloon back in the day.
Granted, these are both games the general public has ignored, rather than outright berated.

Earthbound was EXPENSIVE with it came out. I only bought it because ShopKo went out of business in our town and I was able to get it for like 80 dollars - 40%. A friend of mine who went there too got Shining force IV which was like 105 dollars - 40%. Sweet deals back in the day.

Earthbound may have by and large been ignored bitd, but now a days I would say it has more than acheived cult status at least.

I bought Earthbound as soon as it came out, played through it at least a dozen times and sent away for the special prize (turned out to be a pizza scented air freshener).
Even though I'm not fan(that's all I'll say), all I've ever read about it since it came out have been over the top praise.

And this after making a list that includes King of Casino. Black Tiger explained his reasoning, which I borrowed; isn't that enough?
P.S. - No need to point out the apostrophe in Ys on the SMS as if it didn't belong there. Take a peak at a copy of the game sometime and you'll find it staring back at you.

Don't worry, Necromancer. My comments here and in the ICFTD thread are good-natured. I just like the ambiguity of leaving the winky face out of my posts once in a while.
I highlighted the Y's punctuation because BT left it out. I'm a big fan of the Y's apostrophe (if such a thing is possible) and plan to emphasize it from this day forth as a proud expression of my SMS heritage. :D For realz.

Well, I played the crap outta Falcon bitd. I'm not sure if I actually enjoyed it, or was just fooling myself. There's only one way to find out, and that is buying it again and playing it. *gasp*
As for the other game that seems to be unpopular, at least here in North America, is none other than X.E.V.I.O.U.S. That game dishes out the challenge like nobody's business. It is somewhat slow to start, but once you get past the first boss it's game time. Plus, there are a bunch of secret bonuses and freemen that are strewn throughout the game, which keeps things interesting.
I can't think of anything else at the moment.

Pac-Man (2600) - I didn't care how different it was from the arcade; I still loved it.
FINALLY another 2600 Pac-Man lover! I've been saying for years that it doesn't matter if the port is far from arcade perfect, it holds enough to it's own to make it a fun game. The sound effects and the way Pac-Man moves in the Atari 2600 port is why I like it so much.

Lucinne's Quest is unpopular? It's, to atleast the 3DO crowd, one of the most popular, I love that game! Love the soundtrack too!
Anyhoo, not that I LOVE all these games, but, at the least, here's games I deffinitly enjoy, despite hatred: Impossamole Talespin Strider Hiryu Power Golf Mega Man 6 Mega Man X6 Mega Man X7(though, it was kind annoying at times) Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance Castlevania: Lament of Innocense Castlevania: Curse of Darkness Suikoden 4 China Warrior Addams Family Andre Panza Kickboxing Ballistix Bravoman Ane-San Dead Moon Exile: Wicked Phenomenom Fausette Amour Kaze Kiri(not the best, but still good, doesn't deserve some of the hate it gets) Loom Mad Stalker Ordyne Shapeshifter Super Air Zonk TV Sports Football TV Sports Hockey Valis 2 Veigues Tactical Gladiator Vigilante Skate or Die Skate of Die 2 Bubble Bobble Revolution Rainbow Islands Revolution Scurge Hive Dragon View Ys 3 Ys 5 Ys 6 Earthworm Jim 3D Dragon Ball Z Sagas Space Raiders Cyberdillo Dragon Lore Sanurai Showdown 3DO Dark Savior Alundra 2 Granstream Saga Fur Fighters Spiderman 3 Beast Wars Beast Wars Transmetals Beyond the Beyond Contra Adventure Contra Legacy of War Neo Contra Crusader: No Remorse PS1 Mega Man Legends Mega Man Legends 2 I Ninja Monkey Hero Monkey Magic Pitfal 3D Shining Force Neo Shining Force EXA State of Emergency(the 2nd one sucks though) Tai Fu Atari Karts Brutal Sports Football Club Drive

'Expendable' for the Dreamcast. Most people that watch me play this game claim that they don't know WTF is going on... neither do I most of the time.. and that's why I dig it so much. Just blow shit up.. randomly switch to a cut scene with more big explosions and then cut back to the game play with bullets flying all over the place. Hahahah.. 8)

Expendable was a pretty cool DC game.
How about Kid Kool and the quest for the 7 wonder herbs?
That was a fun NES game-
BTW- wasn't there a Sega Master System game that was very similar?
