Title: Superpcenginegrafx has been updated
Post by: Black Tiger on July 10, 2008, 12:14:43 PM
I finally got around to finishing off/linking a couple projects I had been working on at one time or another.

How to Clean a Yellow PC Engine (http://superpcenginegrafx.com/cleaning_a_pcengine.html) - Step by step guide to make a yellowed or dirty PC Engine white again.

Super Darius Perfection (http://superpcenginegrafx.com/super_darius_perfection.html) - Pics plus complete video of the super-play Laserdisc.

Doesn't bleaching white plastics make the yellow come back like 10x worse?

Funny, I just posted a link about yellowing plastics in another thread. Yellowing plastics information - http://www.vintagecomputing.com/index.php/archives/189

I'm curious how the plastic will hold up after bleaching. If the yellow is from 'dirt', it should be OK and stay white. However, if what causes the yellow is from something inside the plastic.......

yeah..unfortunately i've encountered that experience once. i brushed a pce back to white like new, but within few month the pce looked like the teeth from a 150 year old chain smoker. R.I.P.

The PC Engine I cleaned was way worse than it appears in the photos and the pad was really bad. But a year later both have remained as white as the day I rinsed the bleach off.

It might help than I don't smoke.

do not smoke in near of my babies as well ;) anyway there are other reasons for the yellowing of the plastic than smoke e.g. air, sun (ultraviolet), storage...

anyway, thanx for the share and since i didn't use bleach but soap at that time, i will follow your instructions for an other go and see what happens over a longer term :)

The other thing is that I have kept the PC Engine and all my valuables out of sunlight since, so who knows?

Doesn't he live in Japan?  That may not be possible in a place where 150% of the population smokes.

Or at the very least, if he is living in something other than a separate house the whole place may very well be tainted by smoke. Every smoker I've met has been immune to the "scent" of cigarette smoke they can't see.

I concur. Most smokers are completely oblivious to the invisible cloud of tobacco stink they perpetually carry around with them. It's especially problematic for me because I'm allergic to cigarette smoke. I guess I'm just glad Ohio banned smoking in public areas (like certain kinds of parks), buildings, and businesses.

I'm the same way. I don't know if it's technically an allergy, but ever since a near lethal sinus infection when I was younger, even the slightest amount of smoke or 'smoker scent' makes be very ill. We've got better than average anti-smoking laws here, but I still can't avoid encountering huge amounts of it on a daily basis.

Outstanding update! It must've took you a crap load of time to make all of those Darius levels since you had to record every level! It certainly paid off though, that's some really cool rare stuff! I love seeing the NEC Avenue logo shown in old skool 80's video fashion :) .

I might have to try your clean guide for my PCE sometime. I tried bleaching the lid for my CD unit once, but as I posted about my experience here years ago, I made a huge mistake by trying to wipe vinegar on it or something afterwards. Thankfully Helgeson was kind of enough to send me an extra empty PCE CD case he had.

One cleaning tip that I would recommend (that I got from Steve on a thread about this years ago) is to rub a little vasoline on the red PC Engine logo on the system before bleaching it so it remains vibrant. Sometimes bleaching can slightly fade away the logo, but yours looks like it came out fine.

Thanks, I actually recorded the entire laserdisc in one take, planning to slap it on a dvd as-is. But it turned out to be over an hour and a half or something. So I chopped it up for my site and youtube and it did take a hell of a lot longer than I expected. #-o A couple more Darius videos will be added shortly.

I needed to clean some yellow stains from the PC Engine logo anyway. However, I couldn't find any paint loss after careful inspection and lingering bleach smell is a complete non-issue. I think that I could detect the faint scent for maybe a day or two tops. But I also rinsed everything thoroughly.

Doing it the way I did, basically gave me perfect results. :)

The only problem was that I didn't pick up a pair of rubber gloves beforehand and was stuck with only the one and the bleach ate away so much skin around my finger nails in particular that I don't think it will ever all grow back. :P

WAAAAAAAAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

HA! HA! HA!

That explains everything! All of the Super Darius Perfection videos (even a Street Fighter II Arcade "Game Live Video" from Pony Canyon that's on YouTube), it's INCREDIBLE to see that they were for an update on your website (I saw the link on the descriptions of them, but I thought they were just for seeing an entire footage of all the stages, and I was only interested in seeing them there, plus I was busy with other matters). I like the layout of the page, too, with the levels being able to be viewed by selecting them on the in-game map links.

Can similar, or at least the same, techniques for cleaning a yellow PC Engine be used for doing so for a TurboGrafx-16. I'd love to get some of the marker off of the console I have (hopefully, it wouldn't require disassembling it like the Japanese one).

Well, it could be that the secondhand effects of cigarette smoke are affecting you badly, but when I'm around it, I start to feel a little bit weak myself (as if it becomes hard to breathe, and my lungs seem to contract, but it could be psychosomatic as I don't have any known allergies to any substances). I try to cover my nose a mouth when I'm around it, and, trust me, I'll never be foolish enough to try it no matter what kind of situation I'm in.

Are the updates completed for now? THE BIG SLEEPER HAS FINALLY WOKEN UP FROM HIS LONG NAP!

I'm trying to complete neutered versions of projects that have been lying around partially to near-complete for a long time. I should have another small site update later tonight. The Darius map is modeled after Darius II (Darius 1 doesn't have an in-game map) and the icons are straight from the game.

If you're talking about grease pencil type stuff, peanut butter is supposed to work well, but it didn't for me. However, Goo Gone quickly disolved everything but stains, which the bleach takes care of. Even though stains shouldn't be an issue with a black console, it's still worthwhile to Goo Gone and bleach it because the end result is a good as new casing that smells and feels like it just came off of the assembly line. If you're like me, it gives you the same feeling as buying a game new instead of one that could have passed through any number of grubby hands.

UPDATE: Today I added the Street Fighter II "Game Live Video" (http://www.superpcenginegrafx.com/street_fighter_ii_ld.html) laserdisc. Another japanese super-play video.

Also the Super Darius Perfection (http://www.superpcenginegrafx.com/super_darius_perfection.html) page has been updated with Boss and Ending compilation videos.

The Bosses video wound up pretty huge and I will likely break it down into a few parts someday. For now the only alternative is the version. Because these videos were recorded from old laserdiscs through composite, I had to keep the bitrate higher than normal gameplay videos.

There may very well be, but this is the only Darius related one I have ever found. I do have another super-play video of a classic arcade shooter that I hope to get up on my site soon.

The first Super Darius does not have a map? I was wondering if there was one in it from watching the videos (at least to show where the player was going next). I was aware that Super Darius II had the layout, as I've seen of it, and they were nicely taken nonetheless.

Would the bleaching, by any chance, make my TurboGrafx-16 look like a PAL TurboGrafx :x?!? I wouldn't want to try any sticky substances on it too much since they can be hard to clean off later (unless it could be an exception with the Goo Gone) and can end up being hard to clean off later or even damage the console. Aside from that, it's such an honor to recieve that console from you, in spite of it being a hand-me-down to you possibly first (it does have the numbers "1189" on the AC Adaptor, and assuming that it is a very part to the system I possess, could be the date that it was manufactured...Is anyone familiar with the one having the serial number 99A8573HB?). I'll admit it would have definitely been nice to have it new or like new, but using a baby wipe or two on it might have taken care of the grubbiness/germs on it.

WHOOHOO! The Street Fighter II "Live Arcade Video" page also was nicely done (I wasn't sure if it was you playing in the videos or not from them, though you've shown a bit of your before, but that page did help explain it much. I also like the way that the different character images were used to link to the videos of them (like the Super Darius II map layout). They were all nicely drawn on the box (especially Guile, though Dhalsim is faint in the eyes and Zangief looks creeped out). Do you have any other low-quality videos of them made? OH! What are the other videos supposed to be of :D?

Just use a cloth (not paper towel) and Goo Gone will definitely remove any kind of glue-like substance and many other things from your console. The only thing is that you need to then clean off the Goo Gone with something mild like Windex and/or water so your TG-16 doesn't smell like oranges for a while. There are likely similar products that will work as well, but Goo Gone is the only one I've tried and it works.

Either way, it may not be good risking it to be put in bleach as unexpected errors can always occur that may be fatal (to either me or the TurboGrafx-16). It'd be pretty interesting for it to smell like oranges for a while :P. The Windex on its own...maybe that can be a safe technique to use, too (of course, the substance will have to be sprayed on the cloth/napkin instead of the console itself. Oh...I see 8)...

YEA-HA! I've watched all of the videos earlier today, and they were a little uninteresting to view at first, but were intriguing as the viewings progressed (I absolutely love the music for Polaria). I didn't see that you put in a separate video for Solaris, however (did you forget to do so?). Were the graphics on the page based on the Sega Master System of the game, I presume? A nice job with it again, but, as I thought of it, it may be a good idea to put each of the super-play videos into one page instead of separate ones, just to minimize space on the Features page and even for a bit of organization (only if you wish to do so, of course).

I did not see the possibility of a shop in any of the videos, but it could have always been edited out for the video (so it doesn't distract from the gameplay footage). Also, they may have just barely missed the entry way for it to avoid shopping for the recording (maybe, even, it would require a button input for the arcade version to enter the store). I wonder if a sound test is available in Fantasy Zone? If so, then the background music could have always been recorded from it, the sounds from the main captured file could have been removed, and replaced by them for each of the clips.

I think since the shops were edited out, they HAD to use a different music track otherwise the music would have been interrupted at the edit point.  Since there was only 19 minutes available (we all know how short VHS tapes are) they had to cut out that stuff for money reasons.

Play it safe and make sure that it's ammonia free Windex, as many plastics will discolor when exposed to ammonia.  It won't immediately discolor the plastic or make it brittle, but repeated exposure is often a recipe for disaster.  Also, do not drink the ammonia or use it to make meth.

As far as I know, those are the only stages in the game. Are you thinking of Polaria or Pocarius?

The screenshots are from the PC Engine game. I'm recovering from a neck injury and couldn' handle playing the arcade version in Mame. So I used the invincibilty trick to speed through it in Magic Engine.

Yeah the video was edited, but it is possible to fly through a stage and miss the shop if you don't stop. Sony probably wanted this video to fit a smaller size tape to keep costs down. Most/all of the promo tapes I have are all super light.

This was years before emulation and internet steaming video. For many people this would have been the only way to witness the arcade. For others, this could help them to beat the coin-op during a time when arcades actually mattered. Does the arcade even have a continue feature? If it does, it's gotta be from the beginning of a stage.

But people did and today now more than ever do pay real money for far more ridiculous game related merchandise. Although I don't think that game videos are ridiculous in any way.

Thank you for letting me know, Necromancer. I do actually have an ammonia-free type of Windex that I can use on it :).

Yeah the video was edited, but it is possible to fly through a stage and miss the shop if you don't stop. Sony probably wanted this video to fit a smaller size tape to keep costs down. Most/all of the promo tapes I have are all super light.

I can't imagine anyone paying actual, real money for that Fantasy Zone tape. That's just 6 kinds of bonkers.

I did find the separate Solaris clip just a few moments ago, but I must have skipped over it by accident possibly due to a simliarity to another (interestingly enough, there is a shop feature shown in this portion). Don't worry; you have all of the individual stage videos uploaded on YouTube. Oh :(. I'm sorry to hear about your neck. I hope that it reaches fully recovery soon. That makes a lot of sense, especially if VHS videos were costly to produce back then. I definitely see this tape being a good walkthrough guide for players that need any help along with a demonstration of the game/skills to beat it (at the very least, a good music collection with footage). It looks like the continue feature does have the player starting back at the beginning of the stage (particularly indicated by the multiple deaths, along with the indicator map at the bottom of the screen, in Polaria). I don't think gameplay videos are ridiculous, either (unless the editing was done in a way for it to be so), and there are certainly items out there, no matter how strange, that people would pay anything to buy for (definitely if it's rare).

Oh, I can understand paying money for game videos. That's not it. I just found the Fantasy Zone video very short and largely unentertaining. I can't imagine paying money for it. That's all. Not enough money to justify the cost of taping, editing, and distributing, anyway.

I second spenoza's sentiments. That has to be the most unexciting video game video I've ever watched. Not to mention the quality is awful (not the bitrate of Black Tiger's mind you, the source material looks to be pretty shitty).

Site updates are great!

I've known about bleaching for a while its what I did on my first white pc engine I got from ebay's hit-japan.. but I kinda had a fear that the bleach would dissolve the plastic at the time I was bleaching it..
