That sound you just heard was the hope of a million ps3 fanboys shattering in unison. There was a chance (ever so small) that FF13 could've brought ps3 sales out of the gutter, but that hope is gone now.
Contratulations, ps3 owners - you own the modern equivalent of a Saturn. (Not that that's a bad thing, but it's a nice comeuppance.)

All the Sony hate [-( [-(
Pretty sure the PS3 prob has more games in the US than the Saturn did in it's ENTIRE run. Sounds like all the talk awhile ago that Sony was PWNED on the hi def dvd war to... we saw how that went.

I don't know why PS3 fans should be too sad... they can still play their shitty Square RPG. 360 users in Japan are still screwed. Now if it jumped from the PS3 to the 360... that would be huge! I bought my PS3 mainly as a Blu-ray player and it just so happens that I tend to play videogames on it more than I do for my 360. Both systems have mostly shit games, though. Hell, make that all 3 current systems.

I'll have to agree with Joe here. I have 15 games for my ps3 and only about a third of them are fun. I was going to go out and grab the new initial d import, but I'm saving my money for something else
-
I agree with all of you. and why is FF13 such a big deal anyway?
Its been what 10 years since a good Final Fantasy game came out??
This game is bound to disapoint.....

You mean a Final Fantasy game that was actually good was released at one time? I thought that was only a rumor.

Even if it was released for 360 in Japan, it would've sold extremely less than the PS3 version. I'm interested in seeing how the American and European sales will be between the two systems.
-
f*ck Final Fantasy; for years they've been more like sequels to The Spirits Within than video games anyway. Square's probably going to release the 360 version on six discs to match the cinema storage capacity of the PS3.

The modern equivalent of the SMS, TG-16, Saturn, and Dreamcast. Good company, eh?

Not quite. There are a bit less than 500 titles for the Saturn; the PS3 has yet to crack 400. If you were to count just the fun and worthwhile games, then the gap is even wider.

Monday was just funny when Square Enix arrived on the MS stage and dropped that bomb... The internets just exploded with cries.. even my friend who I was talking to was really bitter about it. I said it makes sense from a business point of view.. Square Enix has been loosing a lot of money over the last few years as their software isn't selling as much as they'd like, so going multi platform would bring in much extra monies..
But again all I could read was "f**k S-Enix they sold out"!! and I was thinking .. well now you know how nintendo fans felt when SE ditched the N64 for sony..
Anyway I'm looking forward to this but I do have some hesitations... Especially since I got bored of FFX, didn't touch FFX-2 , bored of FFXII and the 4 months I spent on FFXI i regret it a lot... plus I HATED FF7 advent children movie...
Much much looking forward to the Tri Ace games coming this way.
My strange wierd mind is making me think that the next few weeks perhaps at the tokyo game show Square Enix might anounce a remake of the "rumoured" FF7.. I got a strange feeling it might end up on a wii if they do...

To those dismissing the announcement because Final Fantasy games suck, it's not the game that's a big deal. Regardless of our unpopular tastes, this is going to have a major impact on the current PS3 vs 360 competition.
Publishers greenlighting games have to make decisions based on speculation of where the console market is heading. The 360 is now an even safer bet and the PS3's future is even riskier. Other than at a console launch, they can't justify making a game that has a chance of selling a target number of units sometime down the road.
The way things are going, the PS3 looks like the Xbox, not the Saturn. It may be slightly technologically superior on paper, but in the end the console with more games and units sold earlier on is more attractive to publishers who will continue it's lead in software.
Of course, the Wii will continue to dominate regardless of software. :P

I disagree that this singular title is going to make a huge impact on PS3 and 360 sales, as Final Fantasy ceased being a system seller years ago (in the U.S.). Looking at the gradual decline in each successive title's sales figures, and more importantly the steeper decline of U.S. sales, gives a pretty good indication that few people would've ran out and bought a PS3 just for Final Fantasy.

I'd say despite its software.

Most games will be cross platform. Only 1st party games won't. So I guess it's just a matter of whose 1st party games you like more. Halo? f*ck dat.

It's not going to single handedly change the market, but it was the last big hold out that Sony had other than MGS4, which will likely also make it to 360 within a year. It was a key piece of a puzzle that Sony needs to put together to remain a serious contender. If FFXIII ever does get released it will still be one of the biggest PS3 titles that's been announced so far.
The 360 would be dead if it weren't for Halo 3 and Gears of War (and without GoW2 they might be in trouble). There are other important 360 games, but they likely wouldn't have landed on the system if the big games hadn't kept it going in the first place. The PS3 needs at least one big game to identify itself with. MGS4 is the closest they've come, but it's surrounded by a cloud of 360 port rumors that Konami doesn't try hard to deny.
The first Final Fantasy of each new generation seems to have a big impact. FFIX and FFXII suffered from coming out it the later half of their console's active lifespans and were kind of 'more of the same' tech-wise. FFXIII certainly has a lot of 'buzz' going for it and early on it was supposed to be one of the games that showed what the PS3 could really do (and that the 360 couldn't). Not only has Sony's claim that the PS3 is a full generational leap beyond the 360 been proven bunk, the general public can now see that they're more or less equal in overall graphics. So now it's all about games.
The real measure of how much of a deal this is, would be the reaction to the announcement. Which I think it's safe to say is pretty big.

This is exactly my point. Halo 3 and Gears of War are two of the biggest games of this generation. MGS4 should be the first game of this profile that's exclusive for the PS3.
-
Wizardry is imo one of the best RPG series of all time and it wasn't just cross platform, I mean this game was a bonified whore when it came to platform hopping. I just hope the War Gods team is re-assembled for the 360 version. You know they'd do great things with it.
-
All the Japanese FF nerds will go and buy the PS3 version, and then a year later, 360 version will be released in Japan with some super-minor updates which will then drive the same nerds to go out and buy the same damn game.
-
Seriously though, any game that was supposedly PS3 exclusive initially, makes me wonder, how many discs those games will be on, when on 360. If they fit FF13 on a single disc, or even 2 discs for the 360, then, they really weren't using the full capacity of a blu ray in the first place, unless I suppose they downgrade the graphics? Compress the sound?
-
They are looking at ways of compressing and making use of the dvd storage. The PS3 will probably have lossless 7.1 audio which can be scrapped for 360.. plus they should just reduce the quality of th 1080p FMV which I really don't care for as I found myself wanting to press the skip button to fast forward on L.Odyssey..
I wonder if they are gonna make the 360 version the first game to use double sided discs...
