A short while ago, I've read the feature "The 10 Worst Game Intros of All Time" on GamesRadar.com, and had Last Alert's placed at #4 in the list. The article page itself mentions on how Japanese gamers, or at least their game industry, might have really dug Rambo, the voice work sounding disinterested and amatuer, some comments on the scenes, and it could be the exact opposite of Metal Gear Solid (the series perhaps?). The suspense that the "loading screens" made during the beginning segments made it quite exciting! I couldn't help but chuckle when I first watched this and saw the skeletal Jesus Christ sadly staring down on the planet Earth after the introduction of the four members of the Force Project. I felt that the CIA head could have used a deeper voice to suit his character, being of someone highly important. I wonder what type of person had been used to voice Guy Kazama, since his voice has a notable accent especially on the word "guys?" I didn't find it to be THAT poor of an introduction, but I can see that its sillyness and voice acting had deemed it to be one. The article page and the opening itself can be seen here:

Is this position agreeable or disagreeable? Would the gameplay also be considerably as worse to many others? I have seen this game a bunch of times at Amazon.com (which the cover seems to have a mencing Akuma from the Street Fighter series-like character on it), and had though that it was an American-developed TurboChip game until I had viewed this. I've also noted that Sunteam_Paul had given this game (http://www.pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Red_Alert.htm) 2 meats out of 5.

The gameplay is solid Kirby- quite an enjoyable title. Some such as myself deem it a Bloody Wolf Deluxe. If you dig the whole Ikari Warriors/Commando thing- if you'd rather play with G.I. Joes, leaving Barbies on their own to go on shopping frenzies with Ken, if you want to play with the cold weaponry of men then you'll get your money's worth. Guy Kazama is one cold hearted killer- and he thirsts for blood. Think you can handle this?

can you handle montana?

sorry guys..but zero wings for MD/GENNY is on place 10?!?!? this intro is probably the most legendary and funny intro of all time. how dare they are?
-
I love the Last Alert intro, very 80's action flick-ish! Gotta love the Rambo style head band tightening scene.
-
Last Alert is one of my favorite games for the Turbo, EVER!

someone shitted in their brains!

Last/Red Alert is a very good game. For those who love Ikari Warriors -like games, this one is a must have. I like the way it is scripted and the fact that you have different missions (especially in the first stages). I've never played the US version, though, so I couldn't say anything about the voice acting but the voice acting in the japanese version sounds very professionnal.
Moreover, I think it's quite harsh to consider it a bad intro as the visuals are very good, considering its release date.

Coming from the guy that loves Battle Royale, this doesn't surpise me. :D

Last Alert is a very good game, but the cinemas do indeed suffer from poor voice acting. But who cares? I'm there for the gaming, not the cut scenes.

I'm only interested in the cut scenes. In fact, I'm selling all my games except for Final Zone II. Those cinemas teh rulz.

it is quite cheezeball, but nowhere near the silliness that is zero wing.
I agree with Tatsujin; some person has clearly defecated in their craniums.
-
Last Alert's intro is hilarious and has so many great lines.
"Guy Kazama is the only one"
"I thought we'd always do things together...even when we DIE"
"Well I owe Lloyd and the Force project one and I always make it a rule to get square with these guyysss"
This article completely disregards the historical context of the games. It's easy to look back at Last Alert and make fun of the cheesy back story and bad voice acting, but in 1990 that intro would have been significantly more impressive.
Video game "journalism" is such a joke. Hopefully someday, as the medium continues to mature, we'll get real insight and thoughtful commentary instead of absurd fluff like this article.

Agreed sure the voice over are a joke but it's so cheesey that it entertains me.

So, it seems that there are some fans of this title. If it is as good as several members imply, I may be able to consider purchasing it once I'm able to get a CD add-on for the TurboGrafx-16 I have (I should be able to handle it all right; I can take a bit of violence and I do enjoy playing the Contra games 8)).

I thought it was actually pretty good , definitely one of the better writings I've seen. None of the intros that I've seen were in the list had the appeal of being a really good opening scene and not belonging in there; I can see why each of them were decided to be placed within it.
Zero Wing's entry, as the writer states, is not because it was conceptually bad, but because of its very bad translation (and perhaps how it became a "geek phenomenon" even after years the game itself fell into obscurity). He says that the scenes where the Captain is taunted by CATS and where he makes the final order to send out the Zigs "for great justice" are shocking and tear-making.
Another thing, too, is that Last Alert might not have aged well (at least to Mikel Reparaz of GamesRadar US). Since that could be the case, it can be pretty easy to see the flaws of older titles after getting over the impression of them overtime (and vice versa can also occur). It did have a little pinch of (histerical) past context, at least, mentioning a number of '80's games with main characters resembling Rambo :P.

I love everything about Last Alert for what it is. Well, maybe the music could be a bit better but even that is cheesy! The fact that it is actually a very good game just makes it more fun to play through, obviously.
"Guy Kazama is the only one"
The very end of that line is clipped off when playing the game. "Guy Kazama... is the only wuh" *snip*
I would love to get all of the original actors back together for a sequel. Oh, the fun I could have with the writing!

Even the last level? I don't understand how the game can be so insanely easy, and then when you get the last level it's insanely hard in a cheap-level-design kinda way.

Usually, yes. IIRC sometimes it doesn't get cut off.
-
I don't recall the last level being challenging.

You have to stand exactly in the middle of the platform to avoid getting hit from the sides, and IMO the collision detection is spotty at best -- never mind the memorization-heavy bombs that are almost impossible to see.
I recall the boss being cheap as well, but it's been awhile.
-
The final boss is SUPER cheap. Luckily, I found that standing in the right spot will keep you from ever getting hit. If I hadn't found that, I probably never would have seen the "too-disappointingly-short-for-such-a-long-game" ending!
-
I love that game, cheesy voices and all!
-
alot of games of the Last/Red Alert era suffered from poor voice acting. I wouldn't hold it against them. It's not like NES games had ANY voices or animated scenes. :)
neither did SNES......... hell nothing but TG did til sega CD, and ...... thank god Last/RedAlert didnt have that awesome low fps FMV crap sega cd had.
-
Oh, it did. It just didn't have as much of it.

HuVideo FTW!!
