Title: Got an arcade cabinet!!!
Post by: COUNT SMRIFNACK on July 27, 2008, 06:20:12 AM
Well, yesterday I picked up a Willow arcade unit.  It was complete minus the side art.  It even had the service manual still inside.  It works great.  The screen was blue in places and therefore in need of degaussing, and I fixed it buy using a soldering gun.  The Willow game itself is actually really fun .  But I'm sure most of you know the main reason for getting it was to play Splatterhouse.  And this is a great cabinet for Splatterhouse since it has the same control layout as Splatterhouse did.  Anyway, here it is.....(http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/921/dscf6926pr0.jpg)

This is what you told your wife, correct?  We all know you intend to also get a Splatterhouse cab too.  No use hiding it.

That's a really nice looking cab.  I love the CPO (and the marquee is pretty rad too); arcade art from that era has a really great aesthetic.

I hate the controls from that era though.  It's all ambidextrous CPs and leaf-switch buttons and joysticks (although I do prefer the ball tops over the bat tops).  Microswitches 4 lyfe!

What was the cab originally?  IIRC Willow was only available in kit form, but I could be mistaken.

This Willow was a kit. Though I have seen two different control panels, so it makes me wonder if there were actual cabinets for it and kits, or just two different control panels for kits :?:

I do not know what the cab originally was.  Is there any way to tell that I don't know about??

There might be some kind of serial number on it: look for either a plate/sticker on the back, or something attached to the inside of the cab.  If you can find such a thing it will almost certainly name the manufacturer and from there it should be pretty easy to figure out.

You could wreck the control panel, peeling off the CPO and hoping the old CPO is underneath -- but I'm guessing you probably don't want to do that :)

If you can't figure it out and you're still curious you can post pictures on the klov forums and one of the crazy old timers experts on there will probably know.

If you do figure it out you should post on here.  I, for one, am always curious about these things.

Oh, another way to help figure it out is to look on the underside of the CP.  Chances are good (although not 100%) that the conversion required a new CP layout, so there will be extra holes that have been covered up by the CPO.  If the CP had a unique button arrangement it might be possible to figure it out from that (or at least give you some ideas).

Its prob just some old Dynamo or Romstar cab. Either way I would ditch the buttons and stick and get a nicer set in there that matches the panel colors more. Wont cost you much of nothing to do, you'll be alot happier for it.

Wow.  I didn't know Splatterhouse ran on Capcom hardware.

Its a Jamma cab. They all use a standard plug like a cart slot that feeds power, directs controls to the pcb game, and pulls video and audio from the pcb game. All you have to do is pop open the cab, unhook the old Jamma game board, and plug in a new one, given its a Jamma based cab and you don't need to add any extra buttons or controls to the panel.

But wouldn't playing Splatterhouse with Willow artwork cause confusion or maybe even a seizure?  This just doesn't seem right.  I'm alerting the president.

Agreed - the game looks like a lot more fun than the movie, not that that's saying much.  Show off your woodworking skillz and build a cabinet for Splatterhouse.  8)

Finally! Someone who agrees with me!! I couldn't stand Willow - it bored me to tears. Seriously, I saw the movie during a classroom pizza party in grade seven. All I remember is watching that movie and actually wishing that I was doing math exercises instead. The game, however, is a completely different story. I used to play it all the time in the arcades.

Lochlan....there is no other cpo under the Willow, and the buttons you see in the pics are the only holes in the cp.  So I don't know that it was before.  But  I do know it is fixing to get some Willow side art after getting re-vinyled on the sides and front.  I located one original side art sticker for it, and am going to get 2 copies made of it and use them on the cab.  Splatterhouse is still the "jam" in it though.  My wife has played it so much she can beat it on normal diff. (4 hearts) with extra lifes set up for 50K and 100K (instead of 30k and 75k like TG) with one credit.  I am still trying to beat it on hard (two hearts) without ever using a life (one mask), but always seem to loose a life somewhere
