Are you talking about Hiso Kihei Kai Serd (http://www.pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Hiso_Kihei_Kai_Serd.htm)?  I've never played it, but it looks cool.

Yep that's it.  Hmm, it is listed as "Serd Kaizard" AND "SERD GAI SHADOW" on Ebay.  It looks kinda like a nectaris-type game.

I wonder if you could playing without knowing japanese.
