I am new to the Japanese Saturn seen and i am looking for some recommendations that are "must haves" for the system.
Me likey action, shooters and side scrolling goodness :-k
can ya help sparkles spend his hard earned cash :P

Battle Garegga is a great overhead shooter as is Soukyugurentai. I have them both which means they should be pretty cheap. Blast Wind is another good overheard shooter and Hyper Duel is a good side scrolling shooter. Both are cheap if you steal them. Despite its hype, I really enjoy Radiant Silvergun. Of course the Capcom fighting games are always recommended.
My mind is drawing a blank right now, but there are definitely more great games.

Sexy Parodius is a must have.....best of the Parodius series!

as for shmups, go for all exclusives, since most of the non-exclusives are better on the PSone, except of the ST-V ports (since this hardware was literally a Saturn in arcade form).

You'll be tracking it down on the Playstation. It is Japanese-only on the Saturn. As if the game weren't hard enough, WD supposedly made the US version even harder. I've never played the PS version because I bought the Saturn version and wasn't tremendously impressed with it. The gameplay mechanics felt so forced.

I guess my memory of playing the WD version was actually on Playstation. #-o
I did play the Saturn version some time before that though.

I'd go for Batsugun since its not fully emulated yet. Also get Thunder Force V.

If memory serves me correct,Metal Slug was A Japanese only game for the Saturn.And also Power Drift and the Capcom Generations.

Super Tempo (action platform that is way under rated)

Shienryu (Raiden style shooter and different than the arcade version by Athena)
Assault Suit Leynos 2 (great masaya series mech shooting)
Psychic Killer Taroumaru (crazy awesome action game)
Tengoku the Game Paradise! (very nice wacky vert shooter by Jaleco)
Shippuu Mahou Daisakusen aka Kingdom Grandprix (vert shooter)
Waku Waku 7 (get if you don't own the NeoGeo version) 4 MEG RAM cart should be used
Street Fighter Zero 3 (one of the best home versions out there)
Twinkle Star Sprites (get if you don't own the NeoGeo version)
EDIT: Some hate it and others love it, but you might want to check out Sol Divide. Other Psikyo shooters that are pretty good are Sengoku Blade 1&2, Strikers 1945 II. Gunbird is great as others have already recommended it.
