Title: Duo reliability poll
Post by: guyjin on December 27, 2008, 07:13:02 AM
Is one type of duo more reliable than others? let's find out.

(if you had a duo of the type specified that broke, or has problems, and you have not had it repaired, assume you did anyway.)

I had to replace the laser in one of my DUO-R's.  By the looks of the laser it looked like somebody wiped their ass on it.. so I can't
blame NEC on that one.. since the DUO wasn't designed for that kind of use.  All my other DUO's have always been solid.. even the
black one.  8)

Great poll, should be very interesting to see the results.

I voted "I own a USA Duo and have never had to repair it", however I must admit that I am scared that one day I will need to repair it.

What are you talking about, the US duo repairs itself!

You know... at first the CD audio had totally crapped out while I was in the Philippines, then when I brought it to an old coworkers house it was spotty... then the last time I played it, it was pretty good.

So there may be some truth to that...  8-[ :-k

I bought my Turbo Duo at launch, have horribly mistreated it and have never had to repair it (other than patching up a hole I smashed into it).

I bought a Duo RX from a japanese seller and had to replace the lens not long after. The same thing actually happened with a Neo Geo CD system that I believe was from the same seller.

I own a US Duo and have never had to repair it (knock wood), though I have had to nudge the lens back in after using CDRs.

I would keep using the Duo over the TGCD if I were you:

1)  AC adapters and lens are easier to find for a Duo than the TGCD.
2)  The TGCD has a little plastic gear that wears out and loses teeth.  Nothing short of buying a second unit for parts will fix that.
3)  I've seen more advice on the internet for repairing Duos than TGCDs.

You're going to have to do some work on either one sooner or later.  Duo's load slightly faster so you might as well use that for CDs.  Keep your TG16 with just the CD interface hooked up for Turbochips - less wear and tear on your Duo's hucard port and all of your tiny Turbochip save files will stay in one place instead of cluttering up your Tennokoe banks.

hmmmmm <<rethinks>> vestcoat i hear ya an agree my friend... but like you said i will have to do repairs sooner or later on both, but for me  the TG16 CD can be still the first to burn out... that TGCD monster does not make me hot & horny like my duo does <<my precises>>

I own a Duo -R and so far have not had to repair it.

It there was an option "I used to own a US Duo and it needed repaired, but never was repaired", I would have selected that also.  LOL

Well I owned a US Duo from launch until I sold it last year and never had to repair it. I checked the box claiming I still owned it.

I bought a Duo R broken and then had to fix a few things on it.

I would mostly chalk up the reliability of my original Duo to me owning it. I very very rarely break stuff. Obviously no amount of care can keep, say, an Xbox 360 alive, or keep the capacitors from leaking in a Duo, but it makes iPods, phones, NEC systems, etc last a lot longer if you are just nice to them.
