Title: Super Mario Bros. has been de-throned.
Post by: oldskool on January 07, 2009, 08:25:29 AM
According to VGCHARTS, Super Mario Bros. is no longer the top selling video game of all time.  It's now Wii Sports.

And yet Super Mario Bros will always be infinitely more well-known.

LOL, Sorry but pack-in titles do not count as purchases. What about Super Mario World? What about Sonic the Hedgehog?

What a joke.

Super Mario Bros was a pack-in, too.

The best selling non-pack in is probably something lame like World of Warcraft.

Yet Super Mario Bros. was sold separately.

I don't care how many units were 'sold'.  It gets real old, real fast.

Agreed.  As culled from wikipedia, 20 million copies of Super Mario World were shipped and surprisingly only 6 million copies of Sonic.

Super Mario Bros was a pack-in, too.

The best selling non-pack in is probably something lame like World of Warcraft.

Also taken from wiki - SMB3 is the best selling console game at 18 million, closely followed by Wii Play at 16.15 million.  Though not on consoles or singular games - 20.08 million copies of Pokemon Red, Blue, Green, and Ghey were sold for the Gameboy and the Nintendogs quintuplets have sold 20.03 million copies thus far on the DS.

Wii Sports sold millions in Japan, and it was not even a pack-in.

The only reason Wii Sports (and similar such games) is doing so well is because the masses are complacent and lazy, too weak and/or stupid to go outside and play sports for real, yet they want to feel like they're actually doing something.

Yeah, that's the reason I don't actually box - because I'm lazy, weak and stupid.
and it's the reason that I play Wii bowling. And tennis.

Wii Sports is more convenient than doing the real thing mainly because grandma can play.  She can't play on the same team in real life with a 4-year old and a 30-year old.  This is why Wii Sports does well... because grandma can play.  And everyone loves their grandma.

Wii Sports does get old, but so do a lot of games.   I was impressed by it the first time I popped it in.  It was some good fun for a bit.  It did get old, but then I started busting it out when we'd have company over.  It's great fun as long as you're not going solo when playing.  That goes for a lot of Wii games.  Nothing will beat a Bomberman party though...nothing....

Wii Sports isn't a substitute for sports, its a substitute for games. Stuff like Adventure Island and Bonk isn't really being made anymore, at least not in a high profile sense. The big sellers are stuff like Halo, WoW, GTA, etc. These games are extremely time consuming, often violent as hell, and many time impenetrably complex for people who have a life outside of games.

I don't own a Wii, but I'm much more likely to play Wii Sports than I am the latest Final Fantasy or CoD title because these games are f*cking useless in short spurts. Generally I just play stuff like PC Engine or something for DS or PSP.
