Title: Ok IGN reviewers are idiots....but Star Soldier 4/10?????
Post by: Duo_R on April 10, 2009, 10:41:14 AM

a 4/10 for Star Soldier for NES??? Has anyone played this one?

Sorry if this is about an old review, but I was going to buy this and found this "rip a hole in it" review. I just thought it would be cool because it was the 1st of the Soldier Series. Is it trash or worth picking up? I was going to get the GBA Famicom release, which might be kinda fun to play. I loved the sound on one of the videos I saw on it.

I have the famicom cart. It is an older game, and, as long as you aren't unrealistic with what shoot-em-ups from that era offer, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Shooter fans: pick it up, you'll have some fun

"Retro" fans: pick it up, you'll have some fun

I hate using the word "retro"....

Did I read the review? No, not yet. I'm packing my suitcase.... vacation time.

I'll read the review later to see what the specific criticisms are.

In general, I can understand a critic being "harsh" when a company is over-charging for a product, especially if the re-issue/conversion isn't overflowing with love and attention to detail (i.e. VC downloads @ $8, GBA re-issues @ $20+, etc.).

To be continued...

I agree with Esteban here. I don't own it yet, but I've played it on emulation. Keep in mind that star soldier originally came out in 1986... very old even for a NES game. It does have stages and bosses, which not all games that old do.

If you're a fan of the soldier series, you should really play it to check out the series' history!!! You might want to try it first before you buy, but you should definitely play it if you're a soldier fan!!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the game.

I won it, star force, and starship hector for NES.

Theyre all great.

Its similar to astro warrior for master system, and thats a fine game.

IGns problem is that they compared it to Ikaruga, or some other rare Shmup they never actually played.

Half of them probably don't even know what an NES is

Sure is duo_r i just ignore ign rateing for it.Beside they all ways rate old games by todays standards...for wich games like star soldier shouldn't be rated that way.

I wonder if advertisers pressure them to write bad reviews for old games like that, just so people will be more interested in buying their new crap.

The reviewer compared it to the other games in the Famicom Mini series, specifically Xevious, and found it lacking.  He didn't care for the backgrounds, complaining that they were distracting and that the shot blocking sections weren't readily apparent and more hindrance than helpful; all arguable points and hardly original.

I wonder if advertisers pressure them to write bad reviews for old games like that, just so people will be more interested in buying their new crap.

Perhaps, yet they gave decent ratings to a couple other titles in the series (Mappy - 7/10, Balloon Fight - 6/10).  It seems like the biggest complaint they have with many in the series is that they can be fun little diversions, but they're overpriced when compared to the various collections/museums.

eh.  I think reviewing anything that is not current is stupid anyway.  They all had their runs in magazines and nothing today is going to change any of that.   I have old nintendo power with all the star soldier games in it.  They were solid back then. -_-

plus half the reviewers, despite their ages, haven't played most of what they review prior to being told they're reviewing it, so they have no original basis for anything.

IGN is the same place that said the remake of FF3 on DS plays like an early 90s RPG.

IMAGINE THAT.
