That'll be good for getting rid of the black bars in a lot of movies, but then you'll have to have 'em when watching 'normal' television.  Too bad the HDTV standards weren't set at this to begin with, considering that's what most films have been using for years.

Cool. I'll check this out more when I get home. So what happens when you watch a movie that is 16:9? You'll have black bars all around? But like Necro said, most movies are 21:9 now anyways, and I don't subscribe to the rip off that is cable anymore. lol

21:9?  LOL that is not an aspect ratio that anybody in cinema recognizes.  The proper term is 2.35:1 and it can go to 2.40:1 as well.  Basically the same shape, though (but still not quite wide enough).  21:9 just sounds so.... consumery... as if it was dumbed down for the public.  But I wouldn't say that most movies are made in that format, it is about half.  The other movies are 1.85:1 which is still wider than 16:9.  There is no way to avoid black bars no matter what kind of TV you have.  People will just end up stretching their 4:3 and 16:9 images to fill the the screen and not notice the distortion.  Also, there is no format for video this wide, so the video would have to be blown up to this, reducing quality (like zooming in on a shitty letterboxed LaserDisc on a 16:9 TV vs a true 16:9 DVD).

Is there any reason that future Blu-ray profile updates couldn't include support for wider resolutions?

No reason other than incompatibility with current players.  The new stuff would have to be scaled down to fit a 16:9 screen and would look worse than current Blu-rays do on 16:9 TVs.
