picked up some old gaming stuff today; one of them was "awesome super nintendo secrets 3".
Since I needed to take a really big and satisfying dump, I decided to use it for reading material. As I flipped through it, I found pages printed with random dots. "for viewing instructions, see page xxx" - Magic Eye! a blast from the past. Except they weren't called that, they called 'em SIRDS (single image random dot stereogram), and they were black and white, not color.
Anyway, they were mostly pretty simple geometric shapes. A couple featured dolphins. really had nothing to do with the book at all; I guess they just wanted to fill blank spaces with something. I remember geometric shapes and dolphins being the most popular subjects of 'magic eye' sheets. they used to run on the last page of the Sunday funnies. Then they went away without much notice, like pogs or the power rangers. oh well.

I hate that stuff. Never worked for me. "Relax your eyes! Back away slowly!" Yeah yeah yeah. [-(

I loved those, until one time I got drunk and then tried going though a book, I felt so sick! I just did some tonight on my computer screen. Did no think it would be possible but it totally worked and pretty good too (although they say glossy book is better). I always had a hunch these things caused me to wear glasses tho!

Same here. All my friends were able to do it. One friend even explained how these stupid things worked. I still didn't see a goddam thing. I can shift where my eyes focus, too.
I was happy to forget the unjust pain of stereograms until this thread was created.

Did you ever try the mirror method? you put the picture up against the mirror, then use the mirror to look in your own eyes, and then, without shifting your focus, look at the picture.

You forgot the last step:
Say "Bloody Mary" three times, then turn off the lights.

Yeah, but Candyman took it from pop culture (at least here in the States). "Bloody Mary" is probably the most common :). Even scientifically-minded kids got nervous wondering what would happen if, by some crazy chance, saying "Bloody Mary" in a darkened bathroom would unleash the Beelzebub.

I remember these things, but as has already been noted, they were always the same ol' stuff - geometric shapes, dolphins, and planets. The space ones were the coolest, though going crosseyed staring at planets and the occasional space shuttle got old quick.

I'd rather that it would unleash a different kind of vengeful spirit..... one made with vodka and tomato juice.

Clearly, someone needs to make magic eye porn.
-
Aside from a couple of flukes, I never could see through those damn things. :x
-
You just gotta cross your eyes slightly; when they start to readjust, they should focus in on the hidden image. That is how I got it to work.

you wear glasses? That always dicked them up for me as a kid.
-
i've used to use that trick decades before the first magic eye book was released. watching at those wire mesh fence and suddenly, when they overlap, it gives the impression that the fence is lying in an other distance or dimmension to you. kinda crazy 3D effect.

Yes, I do wear glasses. That may be the reason why this never works for me.

See above post.

hmm...Have you tried moving your glasses away from your eyes and back? The trick requires a refocus on the image. I guess I'm not the best dude to give advice on your problem since I don't wear glasses, yet. I feel that my eyesight has gotten significantly worst this year, not sure why. Maybe I'll be joining you dudes soon, idk.

..... I don't wear glasses.....
What?!?! Your avatar clearly shows you wearing shades.
-
 hey, those aren't prescription! lmao. 8) Gotta wear these shades when playing the turbo, it has so many colors on screen at once! It blows away the competition!
