Title: Best PC Engine CD-ROM2 games?
Post by: Mathius on April 29, 2009, 07:12:12 AM
Since I am new to this, what do you guys think would be the best CD-ROM2(not Super CD-ROM2)games I could import? I don't read japanese so RPGs are out. Good action and shooter titles. Once I get a Super System Card or a Duo-R then we'll talk about Super CD-ROM2 games :)

You know that CDs aren't region locked, right? you can play US CDs on Japanese systems. Get the American version of Ys 1&2, Cosmic Fantasy 2, and Buster Bros, if you don't have 'em already.

Also, all the Valis games, except 1 which is an SCD. There are American versions of 2 and 3.

Yeah I already have Cosmic Fantasy and Buster Bros. And I am aware that there are no region lockouts that's why I am asking about PC Engine CD imports. Spriggan sounds cool. Ys books 1&2 are on my list to buy as well.

You could do worse than Super Darius, Monster Lair, Splash Lake, or Terraforming, though the last three are also available as US releases.

Legend of Xanadu II (doesn't matter if it's in Japanese, it's still awesome!),

What if he cant read Japanese!

and that is a Super CD game.

How about Hellfire S, Red Alert, Terraforming, Ranma 1/2 (Only if you like Ranma, lol), and Wonderboy III?

Nah, that's a regular ol' CD-ROM^2.  That's definitely one of the best shooters that's not Super CD-ROM.

On the other hand, Macross 2036 is a Super CD-ROM game.  I gotta try that one...

I am looking at a picture of the case right now and it clearly looks like a CD-ROM2 title. Here's the link, you'll have to zoom in on the picture.

I can't find one yet. I almost won an auction for one on monday but some dude swiped it from me 5 or 10 secs before the auction ended. Talk about searing anger  And I am not going to pay what GameSquadStore wants for one. I'll just wait for another one. They pop up on eBay once a month or so. Legit ones any way(see my post on that).

On the other hand, Macross 2036 is a Super CD-ROM game.  I gotta try that one...

I thin Macross 2036 is a bi-compatible game.  I believe it is playable with the CD2.0 controller card, SCD tweaks the game a little...  (Don't remember the differences, I think there's a post on the forum about it.)

Hrm, well Spriggan is so awesome it FEELS like a Super CD Game. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Yes I listed some Super CD Games, that was purely because I wasn't paying attention when I read the first post :P

Man!! You guys have me so excited about Spriggan that I am having trouble waiting for this auction to end. Just a little more patience. To help with the waiting I jst picked up Dungeon Explorer for only $13!!   Blame Spida1a's You-Tube review for that purchase :D

I also found a copy of Cosmic Fantasy 2 MIB. I almost don't like the game. The anime cut scenes are cool but the random battles are beyond ridiculous!

So what's Vasteel all about?

I completely forgot to list Vasteel (thought of it earlier). :P

It's a fun war sim, even for people like me who don't enjoy war sims. The map is setup like Military Madness/Nectaris (kinda like Famicom/Advance Wars). The battles are one on one with controlable mechas. You can set it to auto battle if you want. It spans several planets and there are space battles, all fought with cool robots with 8 angles per model. The game features all kinds of cool special effects/graphical tricks. The only down side is the lounge music soundtrack. The PCE version is cheap and totally playable.

I am not trying to change the subject but since I have all your attention I need to ask a question. Where can I get a Turbografx(not Duo) extension cable. I accidentally bought the wrong kind from Monoprice. It only works on the Duo. But it was real cheap, so not a big loss. Plus if I ever get an American Duo I'll be all set :D  Anyway, there are a few international options through eBay but I'd rather go stateside. Any ideas?

Someone here, or ebay, is your best bet I would guess for an extension.

Or do what i do, sit with my face against the TV more or less.    It feels more Turbo that way!  Or use the Turbo Tap as a ghetto extension, which I also currently do all the time.

Cosmic Fantasy 2 gets alot better once you are at the point where the random battles are just funny little jokes. (Yknow, when you just kill everything in a round).

Exile, Vasteel and CF2 are all pretty damn good.  Exile is a little bit RPG, and a little bit Action.

(that almost turned into an Osmond joke)

Exile is a very easy going game also.   You won't really be throwing the controller in anger at it, but its involved and fun.

Don't be afraid to pick up Avenger if you can find it really cheap. Sure, from first impressions you might think it's utter hogwash, but there is a good, challenging shooter hidden away in there. And it has some amazing pictures between levels.

I really like Exile so far. As to the extension thing I will check the forums first. Then I'll go the Turbo-Tap route if that doesn't work. I have arthritis in my back so I can't really sit in front of the TV and play like I did when I was a kid. The couch is a MUST!

Ok guys I got to say Spriggan is more than just one hell of a game. It's the best shooter I have ever played. The level of detail in the backgrounds is astonishing! In the first level you will spot soldiers running around on the ground as you fly over them. In stage three your ship will actually fly up a waterfall while shooting monster-fish-things that leap out of the falls. The power-ups, like Blazing Lazers, are somewhat confusing to learn. Thankfully, if you let the game idol through the title screen a tutorial will play explaining the various combinations of weapon upgrades. And man, are they ever intense! I think my favorite one so far is the fireballs that spread out and away from your ship(or mech actually). The difficulty is way up there with R-type and Blazing Lazers. I have only managed to make it part of the way through the second level before giving up. Once my skills increase I'll post again and give you my thoughts.

Maybe it's just me, but I find R-Type and Blazing Lazers are in whole different classes in terms of difficulty.

Maybe it's just me, but I find R-Type and Blazing Lazers are in whole different classes in terms of difficulty.

Yeah, I played through Blazing Lazers for the first time in years about a year ago and never lost my shields. R-Type of course, is R-Type.

Spriggan is definitely a great shooter, the first level alone has arguably the best execution of a great concept in a vert shooter.

I haven't even been able to beat Blazing Lazers yet  However, I have only had my Turbografx-CD for a little over a month now. Have faith in me :D

Yeah, especially when all the soldiers on the ground merge inside of the stage 2 boss =P~ That experience alone sealed my love for NEC's consoles.

Spriggan came today :D I'll let you all know how it turns out!

gongrats . but we all (beside of ceti) already know how it turns out

hahahah poor ceti without teh Spriggan- and poor me without teh Nexzr

haha.

OK. Military Madness and Spriggan have made the top of my wishlist.

You won't be the least dissapointed. In either of them. Spriggan is a little hard to come by, especially a stateside copy(I got lucky :)) but Military Madness is a cheap and easy find. You can get one CIB for relatively cheap(I am sure you know all this after all I am the newb here.)

I'm not sure why it was so expensive. You can get Nexzr for relatively cheap now. It's just a sweet shooter. It belongs in an arcade kind of shooter. Luckily it has an "arcade mode" that makes a great game even better. Nexzr, for me, was the deal breaker after years of putting off getting a Duo. I saw that sucker on Youtube and that was it. Love at first sight.

I think my favorite one so far is the fireballs that spread out and away from your ship(or mech actually).

I find Orange and Green my preferred weapon combination in Spriggan most of the time, a nice wide spread that protects you from behind a little.

Nexzr is about 10 times harder than Spriggan so good luck if you get that.

Orange and green? I'll remember that. I also like one yellow and two green combo. It'll cut a giant swath straight ahead of the ship. Most enemies are annihilated before they even enter the screen!

I'm a big fan of 2 blues and 1 red myself. Has great range and spheres that circle to protect you.

To me it seems that Nexzr isn't too cheap. The cheapest I could find on ebay was $89.00. Here's a link
http://shop.ebay.com/items/_W0QQ_dmptZVideoQ5fGamesQ5fGames?_nkw=nexzr+pc+engine&_sacat=0&_trksid=p3286.m270.l1313&_odkw=spriggan+pc+engine&_osacat=0

But again I am still a noob here so there's probably a place I am not looking :-k

Going by BIN's (that usually sit for ages) is DEF not the best way to gauge a games "worth."  Nexzr can DEF be found cheaper than $90.

I ordered mine from here: https://www.risingstuff.com/store/engine-nexzr-p-2364.html?osCsid=p4ksgqmkglhfaej6d68f873m47

Price has gone up a bit since I ordered to.

$65 isn't bad for a top notch pc engine shooter
