..out of 10? :)
-
I give it six Bonk meats. It's good fun and all, but I don't really care for the weapon selection or the upgrade system; not to mention that it's nowhere near as awesome as Soldier Blade.
-
Yeah- Soldier Blade to me is the best in the series by far. I gave SSS 6- but to me six is below average with 7 being average.
Here's how I rank the Soldier series- with BL thrown in for laughs- since some here consider it a Soldier game-
Soldier Blade > Star Parodier > Blazing Lazers > Final Soldier > Super Star Soldier
-
Comparing it to other vertical shooters at the time, i give it a 7, for one reason, its got great music
-
but I don't really care for the weapon selection or the upgrade system;
do you mixing up sumthin' here now :-k

which are the other ones from that time ('90) then? :)

Huh? I only speak English, so I'm not sure what you're asking. :P
I don't like the weapon selection, as the spreading circles of doom look really lame and the flame thrower just flat out sucks (the short range is fine, but the control stinks), and I also don't care for any upgrade system where you have to repeatedly shoot the power-ups to get what you want.
-

I should say 16 bit era (89to95 in the states)to be more accurate, but theres allot of nostalgia surrounding this game for me, its one of the first shooters i ever purchased.

that's what I just guessed, you talking here about final soldier and not super star soldier, which is way superior. don't you?
-
I'm basing my rating from playing it bitd, so my memory is hazy. I remember it being OK, but not stellar. I gave it a 7.
-
i gave it a 9. I like the music.
Other then that,its basically gunhed
-
6. It's decent but not a favorite. The soldier series in general isn't a favorite of mine. They tend to lack balence. Either way too easy or too difficult.
-

Uh, no. I'm talking about Super Star Soldier; Final Soldier would get 8 Bonk meats.

ok, so then I've just missunderstand you about the part of "weaopn selection", since you can do that in FS before the game starts. sry bro^^"
-
I gave it an 8.. I rate it higher than soldier blade and final soldier.. I wish those 2 titles pushed the series higher graphically and playability wise.
Audio in all these games are really good tho.
-

I meant the shooting the 'stuck' power-ups until they turn into the flashing orb thingy; it's just too close to bells for comfort. :D

but those are only the rare choosen ones for getting the golden ships (no backset) :)
nothing to do with the usual power/weaopn ups.
-
I gate it a 9 because I love the music and it was the first shoot 'em up that actually made me like shoot 'em ups.
-

That's all they're good for if you shoot 'em enough times, but otherwise they're just regular weapon upgrades. True enough, they aren't common or a huge part of the weapon power-up system, yet they're still a part of the game. A part I don't particularly care for.
-
I gave it a 9 since I can't vote for 8.5. It's not as excellent as Soldier Blade but comes in second in the series. Thumbs up for the robot boss who shoots his arms at you, he's the man!!
-
I vote a six. Sadly have yet to play Final Soldier, but Soldier Blade takes SSS, and makes it it's bitch :P
-
The weapons pretty much suck. The blue rings look retarded- as does the green lightning. The flame weapon is awful- its like a big curling moustache attack- Useless. The backgrounds/graphics are for the most part uninspired. Compare to Final Soldier - which has SSS's weapons but also a host of others (though the cheese doodle attack is just as bad as some of SSS's weapons) and some cool 50's/60's sci-fi graphical stylings. Soldier Blade smothers SSS in every way- not even worth bringing up really.
-
those who voted Never Played SSS should be taken out back and forced to play CD-I.
-
I give it a 10. This game rocks! I know that its too hard for some, but I think that it is a very decent game. Like others have said, the music is top notch. I enjoy the blue lazer weapon too.
-
Eh, I give it a 5. Easily the weakest of the "series" including Gunhed, SSS, Final, and Blade. Uninspired level design, merely passable graphics, and unexciting music make for a fairly mediocre package in my book. The other three absolutely demolish it in every way.
-

It isn't bad because it's hard- for example R-Type and Image Fight are both crazy tough and yet they demolish SSS. :D
and unexciting music
Yeah - seriously. I think the music is being way overhyped by some people here.
-
I gave 'em a 9 because it was an amazing speedy and dynamic shooter at its time. it played faster and more dynamic than gunhed and was kinda new in its kind. for me personally, it didn't lost any of its charme until today.
I also like the dissed blue circle laser. like an oversized ripple laser from salamander! just great and powerful!
a weak point was the 2nd level, since the BG didn't look that well. but beside of that, it's just a great shootie made out of pure pce madness as it should be!! and some of the levels and bosses looked better than anything in FS and SB together!
I can agree that soldier blade gets some more attention. it's a great shooter graphically as well as acoustic wise, no doubts. but as for final soldier I can't. it lost some of the original pepp which SSS had, and I find its graphics worse, which makes it the weakest part of the 3. altought the BGM is really great.
SSS: 9
FS: 7
SB:9
may some do not like SSS, but hey open your eyes, it's never a medicore shootie as they call it! not even close to that!
-
Super Star Soldier 9/10
Final Soldier 8/10
Soldier Blade 10/10
Star Parodier 8/10
-
All of the Star Soldier games on the PCE are good, and I gave SSS an 8. It's a darn good shooter, solid in all respects, but Soldier Blade and Final Soldier trump it in terms of power ups, sound, and music. My favorite is Final Soldier, which I find to be simply outstanding.
That said, the games are pretty closely ranked. Star Soldier is a solid series, for sure.
-
I gave SSS a 7. And i'd rate the rest....
Gunhed 9 (The first game that got me in to shooters)
Final soldier 6 (never really warmed to it)
Soldier blade 10 (My favourite shooter ever)
Star parodia 8 (i think it's a great, fun little game)
-
SSS = instant win for having teh giant scorpion! 8)

And bonus points for the sampled 'ohoh' and 'ee-ee' in its music.
-
Okay- I've been playing this one lately- never played much of it after I first got it- and last night I got to the third boss in the boss rush on the last (8th) level (green robot- gave me more trouble the second time around)- I don't think I should have much of a problem busting the game up soon- anyway...
I'm gonna have to bump up my rating from a 6 to a 7. It's still the weakest in the series for me- but I found some other things about it that I kind of dig- some of the later levels like the ice board and the giant ship board are much cooler than some earlier levels- and I dig some of the boss fights. Also although I hate the giant twirling moustache fire attack- it kind of makes sense that the most powerful weapon would be the one most difficult to control. Negatives for me are the music- which honestly I really don't care for- blandness of the initial levels and the unbalance of the game- some of the later boards are much easier than earlier levels (ripped through 6 & 7 last night first time playing them- and level 8 leading up to boss rush is a joke). That said I actually found myself enjoying it last night and am looking forward to clearing it shortly...
But again- still the weakest of the series- and I prefer Image Fight and Override to it as well.
-
I voted 9 for SSS. I really loved the music for the final stage (which I had to replay many many times) as well as the final boss. Those tunes really made the game for me.
I loved the flame weapon. The fact that it was unorthodox made it really fun for me to use. I loved that it moves in a sweeping motion when it gets powered up a bit. I would complement that with sweeping movement patterns and it was extremely devastating. The one weakness of it is that it doesn't shoot behind you. I like how that flame weapon reappears in Final Soldier as well! But Final Soldier seems to have too much going on, so the flame weapon makes it too hard to see.
I think SSS has really excellent, well drawn graphics. Honestly some of the best I've seen on PCE so far. I prefer Image Fight because I think the gameplay is more interesting. The drawback of SSS at first was that the gameplay seemed boring... forcing you to just shoot straight ahead or not at all. But it had enough good points to make it a fun and memorable game.
-
7. A better soundtrack and I'd give it a 9.
-
Just played through SSS again last night and it really is an excellent game, I found it alot harder then I remembered though, the last boss is rock hard, maybe I'm not as good at shooters as I used to be. 8)
-
I gave SSS an 8.5 (brought down to 8.) Honestly, it has some of the best graphics ever drawn on the PCE. Lovely shading, and "large", beefy BG and boss graphics. Not the small, weedy, dithered 8x8 pixel graphics we get in some other PCE games. The music and gameplay are both outstanding too. The only downside is that since I played it over and over back in '91, it's not very fresh to me anymore.
But anyway, most of my points above are in contrast to Final Soldier. The reasons FS is looked down on are the bland, uninspired graphics in most of the levels, lazily-drawn bosses, and kind of rushed feeling all around.

I played SSS again because Sinistron suggested I preferred its graphics because of switching to a new tv.... but after trying SSS on my current tv I still feel the same. I really think SSS has outstanding graphics.
One thing in Final Soldiers favor was that it seemed to require more dodging, but SSS seemed a bit more difficult overall.
-
I rated it a 6, I like it but its not my first choice for a soldier game let alone a shooter on the TG16/PCE.
I like Soldier Blade the best primarily for its ship/enemy/boss designs and cool level designs. However I much more prefer the weapon system/upgrade of Final Soldier whcih is my 2nd fave.
-
I gave SSS an 8.5 (brought down to 8.)
[-X normally a 0.5 gets rounded up!

Brought down to 8 because a) they cut the intro that was in the Japanese version; and b) the late grass level and the fire/volcano level are slightly boring.

since this is placed in the PC Engine Forum (not turbografx 16), you should have judged the same version :)

The TG version is missing the intro? :(

I know this thread is old, but I didn't know that anything was cut from the North American version. I'll have to check it out.
Disclaimer: I dig the Star Soldier series. I dig SSS. They are swell, in my book. That said....
I have to say that SSS was a bit of a let down after Blazing Lazers... yes, BL has some dull parts (stage 2 is uneventful and lasts way too long, for example), but I was hoping SSS would demolish BL.
It didn't. It seemed like it was another horizontal shooter akin to BL, but more generic.
Yes, I know BL is not part of the Star Soldier series, but there is no way to talk about SSS without putting it in context (the schedule of releases in North America). BL set the bar high. Sinistron, Cybercore, Dragon Spirit, R-Type, etc. were nice but didn't seem "next-next-generation" like BL.
Isolating SSS in a vacuum, though, it is a decent game. I enjoyed it. I voted "7", and that was before I read anything here.
Call me crazy, but BL's graphics outclass those in the Star Soldier series. I haven't actually compared them in years, but it always struck me that way. BL's graphics are razor sharp detailed without being distracting, inconsistent, bland, etc.
Jesus, maybe I can't be objective.
Maybe I shouldn't talk about BL as part of the series.

Ha! I gotta watch that before I forget it (again!)

such a good game :)
-
I'd give it a 7. It really is a pretty good shooter, but a few things hold it back from really excelling.
-
I rated it as an 8. It was one of the first shooties I picked up back in the day so it holds a fair amount of nostalgia. Great graphics, great soundtrack, love the 2- and 5-minute modes. But the game difficulty feels very unbalanced to me. I wonder why Final Soldier never made it to the States - I like that one more (though maybe it's because I can actually beat that one).
-
Super Star Soilder is brilliant, but in comparison to the original, it is a joke.
Then their is that other soilder game, which is off the hook, and has better graphics but is too commercial compared to Super.
Seriously I love this game, soooo much and can't believe how much fun is in this hu-babe. The game after that just blows my mind, but you also have to consider the original, which can never ever be touched.
Super Star is the best next to Final, but both games lack the original-ism, of the first game. I am so lucky when I brought this game but only recently started to play it.
