I've ripped the following sample from a pce red book audio track (peeps may guess now from which one ).
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WAR3V2VS
but the actual reason for this thread is, I like to now this samples name (if there is a specific name for it, which I guess there is, in kinda technical jargon) and how it's made. as it is a quite often heared sample used in several horror flicks, and creeps me out when ever I hear it 8-[.
I think, it's kind of a distorted violin or sumthing. but well it's probaly just a synthetic created noise.
thanks for helping :)

I am having to jump through too many hoops to try and download that. It's only 24K. You'd think MegaUpload would make that a bit easier.
EDIT: OK I guess it downloaded. I don't know what that is called. I'd like to know, too. Kind of sounds like a rusty gate opening.

That sounds alot like a violin does if you just rake the bow at a retarded angle across the strings, with a timpani or some other kind of thud behind it.
If it was done with synthesizers the thud was done easily... and the stringy part was probably done using some high resonance squarewave with fast PWM, filtered somehow... (if it was analog synths)
if it was FM, I imagine they just messed around awhile til it sounded like they wanted...
that or they used samples from some kind of synth (like a Roland MT-32) and just applied effects and messed with it... it almost sounds like they reversed a different sound, and applied flange to it.

thx for the answers. well my thoughts as well (also about the inconvenient megaupload download procedure ).
so no clue for its name then? :-k
at least the guessing where it came from is still open ;)

For the name of it I would say
"Retard with a violin in an echoy room"
i guess it doesnt really have a name.
string scrape maybe. Its kind of like a pickslide that you do on a guitar only more ear piercing

I thought, it must have a name in the jargon, since it's a quite well used sample in the movie industrie. or at least very similar noises like that.
so, if the pizza string or ochetral hit have their own names, why this one shouldn't :P

Man, now I want a slice of pizza! :P
