Games that are bad (either by your own thought/majority of peeps... (according to SOME, this isn't a possible combination) :-"
-
It Came From The Desert - I thoroughly enjoy every minute of it, though it's bad in almost every respect: poor controls (action sequences), grainy video, not much for tunes, primitive graphics (action sequences again), and kinda short.
Xevius - No explanation required. :-"
Hatris - It's almost universally panned for its slow pacing, unremarkable music, and lackluster graphics, yet it's my favorite falling block game on the Turbo.
Bravoman - If it weren't for it having too many levels and the constant yelling of "Bravo!", I'm convinced that more people would like this title. What's not to love? I'm Dr. Bomb!
-
Don Doko Doko plays surprisingly shitty but is still fun.
TaleSpin tries with variety- but comes up stunningly short in gameplay- but I still find it fun.
Future Boy Conan surely isn't much of a game- but I still had some fun with it.
Pac-Land is pretty damn basic but that's another one that I have fun with.
Power Gate has some of the shittiest graphics for a pc-engine title but I wound up having a good little time with it- though it's definitely on the easy side.
On the flip side there's games that I REALLY thought I'd love- that surpised me by how bad they were. New Zealand Story- I thought I'd love it but I find it simply unplayable. Steam Hearts- I shelled out for it and got a real shitty shooter in return. Burning Angels- Jiggle scenes and two player simultaneous shooting- what's not to love? Everything. Awful game.
-
GENPEI TŌMA DEN - Bloody awful but fantastic at the same time. The graphics are both dreadful and impressive simultaneously, the samples are scratchy as hell but there are so many and they are performed with such passion that you can't help but like them and the music is just great. And it has variety!
-
Paul is clearly drunk.
Future Boy Conan surely isn't much of a game- but I still had some fun with it.
I agree whole-heartedly; I could never understand why so many people think this one is a such a steaming pile.
-
Hatris - It's almost universally panned for its slow pacing, unremarkable music, and lackluster graphics, yet it's my favorite falling block game on the Turbo.
Yeah there's another one- pretty damn silly yet a lot of fun- you recommended this one to me awhile ago necro so thank you- I've had fun with it- did you manage to clear it? I can reach level 9 and also if I start on level 9 I can clear it- but I haven't cleared the whole thing straight through (and so I haven't listed it as clear).
I have to add Spin Pair here- thought it would be lackluster and its graphics leave something to be desired but it's another addictive falling brick- I like it better than Hatris and the story mode was pretty sweet- and unlike falling brick games like Puyo Puyo it's beatable without endangering your sanity. Last fight was against the Black Wizard and I made him my stepson.

I think it gets a bad rep because it's a bit bland. It's not a bad game though, and one of the few (if only) Miyazaki based games.

Yeah, I've beaten it quite a few times; it's unfortunate that it's so easy. :|

That's a good one as well. It looks primitive, but the gameplay is unique and it gets pretty hectic in the later levels.

I'm half awake and can't think of many good examples for Turbo/PCE, but here's some that are close enough-
JJ & Jeff -for those who believe it's absolutely terrible.
Deep Blue -many have fun with it, while most others say it's terrible*
It Came from the Desert -it's been many years since I played through it, but it does seem like a mess, yet people love it for what it is.
Keith Courage -loads of fun for me, but people love to trash it and call it the worst pack-in ever.
Riot Zone -it's a crappy beat 'em up, but any functional beat 'em up is fun compared to so many popular lame games*
Vigilante -see above. Virtual Console brought on a wave of fresh low scoring reviews for this game.
Chiki Chiki Boys -everyone says it's bad, but the arcade version was fun for my girlfriend and I to play through together**
Dragon Egg! -so plain, straightforward and retard easy even on the hardest difficulty. But straightforward platformers are fun, much more fun to me than ones that get carried away with gimmicks or are chaotic like many Sonic games.
Night Creatures -this isn't what I normally think of when it comes to fun bad games, but I get so much enjoyment out of taking on such a huge challenge derived from broken gameplay and it's so rewarding in the end.
Makai Hakkenden Shada -I didn't play very far into it, but it was a lot fun, even though most people probably couldn't last long based on the aesthetics and scrolling.
Valis II -super flawed and technically nothing special, but it's just fun and enjoyable for many people.
Ninja Warriors -the PCE version is a bad port and many say it's a bad ame. Still many people really like it.
Tatsunoko Fighter -seems to get a bad rap, but it was fun on my GT when I picked it up years ago (before the internet began to tell people what is and isn't good or fun).
*For genres like shooters, beat 'em ups and others, even a game that isn't spectacular compared to the huge competition is usually fun for me. I'd rather play a crumby shooter or beat 'em up than a quality sports, mahjong, stealth, simulation or even FPS game.
**Arcade games are designed to make money, many include quarter stealing moments and are therefore unfair/unbalanced. Everyone says how much they love arcade games, but so many don't cut any slack to home ports that retain quarter munching scenes. Plus, games don't have to be deep to be enjoyable.
I love 16-bit RPGs. I like the gameplay and don't play only to watch a story unfold slowly (otherwise why not just play digicomics or watch videos?), so I don't care about language barriers or how one compares to better games. So I have fun with most RPGs that many people consider bad.
Games that are bad on a technical level and would likely score low with most people-
Golden Axe -still plays like Golden Axe.
Strider -plays like Strider to me, which I don't like, but most do.
I believe that Runinruder likes Energy.
Future Boy Conan surely isn't much of a game- but I still had some fun with it.
I agree whole-heartedly; I could never understand why so many people think this one is a such a steaming pile.
I haven't made it very far, but I really enjoyed 'Conan as well.
-
Rastan Saga II. I've met many who despise this game, and the Wiki says that the software team went bankrupt and never produced another project. I still say the PCE version is better than the Genesis by virtue of cover art.
-
Hmm, here's a few I kind of like that suck:
Battle Royale: It's dumb, cheap, and repetative, but somehow fun with a group
Deep Blue: I like this shooter now. I didn't a couple of weeks ago. Thanks Nat.
Vigilante: Crappy kung fu knockoff, but EVERYONE cracks up when the 'skinheads kidnap Madonna'
Xevious: I *love* this shooter, and am continually mystified by all the hate.
Dragon Spirit: Not much love, but I find it an enjoyable shooter
Altered Beast: It's slow, controls bad, and is missing the legendary 'rwise fwom your gwave!', but it's still fun
Tiger Road: I haven't heard much positive about this game, but I find it a fun platformer/action game

I think that all versions of Altered Beast could be summed up as "bad/fun". :)

Here's my list:
Deep Blue- This one is old news; not much more I can add that I haven't said before.
It Came from the Desert- CLASSIC TurboGrafx-16 action game. I remember seeing ads for this game when it first came out and drooling over it but I couldn't buy it because I didn't have a CD-ROM^2 yet by that point. By the time I did pick it up years and years later, it was so exactly like I always imagined, it was surreal.
Final Zone II- My feelings on this are pretty much the same as ICftD, except I don't remember seeing any ads for this one back in the day. I picked it up out of necessity to complete my US collection and found it to be such an enjoyable piece of TG-16 cheese, I still go back to it occasionally and have fun with it. Games like this and ICftD are what defined a completely different era of video gaming.
Shanghai- I'm not sure this one is really considered "bad" by anybody, but it's never included on "games you need to check out!" lists. Shanghai is one of my favorite puzzle games, and the first two Duo entries are quite competent.
The Addams Family- File this one next to Zone and Desert, although in this case it's not quite as clear to me as to why it gets panned as much as it does. My first impression the first time I played it was "no music? what the f*ck?" but after actually playing it I grew to like it fairly quickly. I enjoyed my initial run through the game, exploring the rooms, finding items, and the unorthodox "level" design. This game tried some new and original concepts, and while some worked out better than others, it still remains as a breath of fresh air lacking in most other contemporary titles.
Darkwing Duck - This game is just awesome, plain and simple. Graphics are average to great, story is classic Disney, and it's just fun to play. Some people like to complain about shitty controls, but don't come crying to me with that complaint. I'll just tell you that you probably suck balls at video games and should sell your Turbo.
Shape Shifter - Why the f*ck would anybody badmouth Shape Shifter? I'm not really sure, but they do, so noted by the inclusion on this list.
Blodia - It's just not. that. bad. Sure you can only take it for so long, but I like to liken it to a crossword puzzle book. You're never going to sit down and bang the whole f*cker out in one session. It's designed for return visits.
-
I think I am the only one who thinks its fun....everyone else is a player hater
-
My favorite bad game is Bravoman. I like to imagine that Bravoman is Mega Man's special-ed cousin, and Doctor Bomb is Dr. Wily's. It's just so silly.
-
Man I need to give ICFTD another shot- definitely when I have more time- cause it seemed like I "played" it for a half an hour and didn't actually do anything. The "action" scene tried to kick in once- I had no clue what the f*ck was happening and then it slipped out of my hands in a split second- back to more talks with town lunatics.
Shadow of the Beast- that game is garbage. All the work was poured into music and graphics/animation and the gameplay suffers from it. Stiff and repetitive.
-
But the atmosphere and puzzley riddle like aspects are so fun!
Its not an action game!
Its not a puzzle game!
Its an actuzzle game!
-
Impossamole-I know it's trash on the gameplay aspect & people rip it to no end, but, I love it!
Tale Spin-This game really gets annoying, & is kind of bland, but, I still enjoy it
Strider-It's not the best version, but I still love it, & I think it's the only version I've ever beaten, plus has nice music & I love the extra level
Atomic Robo Kid-is cool :)
Keith Courage-what BT said
Super Air Zonk-it gets ripped on, & I agree as it's a bummer next to Air Zonk, & really, the game could've benefited from using Lords of Thunder's engine, anyways, I still enjoy the game
too tired to think of more ](*,)
-
Atomic Robo Kid-is cool :)
How is this in any way a "bad" game? This is a fun/great game. Do people regularly knock this one? I think it's perfect...
-

Agreed. If the HuCard never existed, people wouldn't rag on this one anywhere near as much. Sure, it's far from perfect, but it's nowhere near the bottom of the heap either.
-
Atomic Robo Kid-is cool :)

It seems like I've heard in the past people rip on it, maybe I'm wrong #-o
Shapeshifter-stupidly hard(for me anyways), not alot of music in it(8 tracks I think?), the controls could be better(probably one of the reasons for it's difficulty), but, I still enjoy the game, it's fun...though I had to use a cheat code AND save states to beat the damn game
Shadow of the Beast-maybe it's just the music that I love, though, I really find the game enjoyable as a whole, even though I know it could be better
Andre Panza-I don't really play it so much anymore, but, I deffinitly enjoyed it, & I think people tend to rip on it
Ballistix-deff. no the best game, but, I still like it
Ane-san-Fun game though kind of difficult, never have beaten it
Bonanza Bros.-I've heard people rip on this game in general(no matter what system it's on), but, I love it!
Bravoman-always have enjoyed it, but it IS too long, I love the music, not to mention the voice acting
China Warrior-it's nothing but a glorified demo, but, I love this game, it's classic to me!
Vigilante-one of the first games I got for the Turbo way back when, I'm sure I'm biased, although, I also had Splatterhouse as the time, & I don't care for that game
Cosmic Fantasy 2-I've heard plenty of people rip on it(maybe just non-Turbo people), but, I love this game, it's the first real RPG I ever played, bought it for the cinemas on the day it was released! I had no idea what I was getting into, but, I saw EGM previewing it, & was totally pumped for it
Cyber Core-underated
Dead Moon-ditto
Dragon Egg-just a really fun simple game to play, & it's got some paralax!!
DS: Legend of Heroes-deffinitly one of my favorite game ever, love the voice acting :D
Final Zone 2-not too shabby
Forgotten Worlds-great music, wonderful gfx
JB Harold-not sure what to say, but, when I picked it up on clearance at TRU, I was happy with my purchase!
John Madden-one of the few sports game I actually enjoy!
Last Alert(& Bloody Wolf)-both don't get enough praise, I love them both for different reasons
Legend of Xanadu 2-not that anyone rips on it, but, it's one of the best damn games on the Turbo....or any system for that matter
Loom-yeah, it's slow, the gfx stink, etc. but, I've beaten it numerous times including on hard, my first point & click game I think
Lords of the Rising Sun-doesn't get enough praise, I love that game, it's just plain fun, one of my friends back in the day was so obsessed with it, that he kept playing it thru the night & into the morning, partially because I was out of save space!
Magicoal-doesn't get enough press, I haven't beaten it yet, but, I do enjoy it
Psychic Storm-one of the funnest shmups, especialy with 2 players
Riot Zone-kinda boring but still fun, great music, wish it was 2 players
Shockman/Shubibinman 2-fun game, awesome music, but too hard
Splash Lake-just pure fun
Terraforming-seems to have a bad rap, I think it's cool if not a bit bland at points
Tatsunoku Fighter-is cool
Takeda Shingen-it sucks, but, there's something strangly appealing about it
Tiger Road-leaps & bounds better then the arcade version
TV Sports Hockey-all the TV Sports games have a bad rap, but this one I truly love
Valis 2-first cd game for me, I can remember the day like it was yesterday, went to Arbie's with my parents for lunch after doing some door 2 door, then went to Babbage's to get me a Turbo cd & a game, had enough for a $30 game, it was this or Last Alert, I chose Valis 2, & it made me happy
Veigues-great game
-
Last Alert is a game I really don't see why it gets made fun of.
The gameplay is solid, and the only real let down is the corny voice acting... but what voice acting was good back then?
-
I can't believe it, but I'm going to have to say Falcon. It's by no means a stellar game, but does have some playability as a basic flight simulator. I remember getting into the missions and you really have to fight to get enemies locked in your sites, not to mention bombing the targets at the same time. A lot of this game is picking the right bombs/fuel/missiles before each mission.
Victory Run is another one. Has a nice challenge factor without making you want to throw your turbo controller through your last remaining CRT screen. 8-[
Xevious, of course.

haha. Well, not really. I just know that a lot of people here think it's a bad game, so I'm just compromising for the sake of this thread.

Ballistix-deff. no the best game, but, I still like it
"Let the game commence!"
Have you beaten this one? I tried beating it a few dozen times, then gave up after realizing it had so frickin' many levels (200 if memory serves), and decided to shoot for the ending using M.E. and save states. I got about two-thirds of the way through, got distracted by something shiny, and haven't got back up on the horse yet, though I really want to see the ending of this looooong game.
-
Atomic Robo Kid-is cool :)

They do. Most of the comments about this game here over the years have been negative.

CF2 is heavily flawed and I totally understand anyone saying that it's technically not a great RPG/game. But it's still an enjoyable experience overall. As I said earlier, it's hard for me not to enjoy a traditional RPG.

Not even close. It's one of many a game on my long long list of games that I have yet to play thru. I'll probably be 90 & still ain't played thru it #-o

I never would have thought that Valis II would be on this list. Granted I haven't played it yet but everyone has recommended to me like it's a stellar game. I have Valis III for my Sega Genesis and it's pretty good so Valis II shouldn't be too bad, right? Right? Either way though I am buying it anyway

It's definitely the worst out of the bunch, but it's still a Valis game. So if you like the Valis series, you'll like Valis II. The music is also amazing.
-
I beat Ballistix....
...I didn't realize it was a daunting task!
shouldve taped it.

Wow, you've some serious stamina skills. How long did it take to get through all those boring levels and was the ending any good?
-
It took a few hours (3 or 4?)
I bought it when TZD did their liquidation....
we sat and beat ballistix, shadow of the beast (and decided the Amiga and Genny versions blow), Lords of Thunder, and Buster Bros.
and no, the ending is retarded and not worth it.
maybe i do it again and tape it

I'd say it has the best sounding soundtrack of the 4 games, with 1 haven't the 2nd best, & then maybe a tie between 3 & 4.
-
Got a love/hate thing toward Psycho Chaser.
Difficulty throws mad curveballs at you!
-
fun/bad games, man I think I could go on for a while on this one but ones that come to mind are(In my personal opinion)are
Camp California-I think the hit detection is all kinds of screwed up on this one but for some reason I still kept playing it
Battle Royal-another fun stinker for sure, but man old school wrestling games were the bomb and i love these generic characters
Shockman-I love the graphics and color pallete, but too damn hard and basic, not enough variety(weapons etc)yet I still like playing this game often
Genocide-sweet anime cut scenes, awful gameplay so bad that you wanna keep playing just to see if its possible to beat it.
-
Lol I just thought of another one
Tenchi Wo Karua(not sure if I spelled it right)aka Warriors of Destiny.
-
Lol I just thought of another one
Tenchi Wo Karua(not sure if I spelled it right)aka Warriors of Destiny.
Tenchi wo Kurau aka "Dynasty Wars"
You're thinking about "Warriors of Fate" which is Tenchi wo Kurau II (Arcade, PS1, Saturn)
-
oh yeah thats right woops my bad, i always get the two mixed up
