Title: Can I use this psu for my PC Engine?
Post by: mdmx on May 23, 2009, 08:48:04 AM: I have an old PC Engine with Interface Unit and CDROM² System. I need a new power supply for my setup. Can I use the following psu?

It outputs 9.5 Volts. However the PC Engine Interface Unit requires 9.0 Volts. A friend of mine told me that it should be fine, too. What do you think. Is the overvoltage problematic?

I think the PCE is expecting 100v or 110v?

I definitely would not risk that in the system. 1.5A seems high. The Duo-R only uses 1A. Even if it does power on, prolonged use might eventually break the system.

I am also not sure on the PCE's polarity.... Im sure someone here will know though.

Post by: Tatsujin on May 23, 2009, 06:17:07 PM: 1. 220V is the inputvoltage which just depends on where you live if you can use it or not. so does your place you're living use 110V or 220V? any way, if you use it with 110V, there will nothing bad happen, but refuse to work.

2. the 9.5V are just fine. the 7805 is a very robust voltage regulator, which will eat the add. 0.5V with ease.

3. the PSU could deliver hundred thousands of amperes and the cd-rom would just take the current it needs from it, as long the voltage is not too much over rate (I=U/R). and by the way, the cd-rom IFU30 needs bit more amps than the DUO, therefore the original PSU is also rated with 9V/1450mA.

just make sure about the polarisation ;)

If its the same as the DUO-R its (-)----(o)----(+) so that PSU is backwards

That's strange because the plug fits fine when I connect it directly to the PC Engine or CDROM² System. It seems that the Interface Unit has a slightly thicker metal bolt (or whatever you would call it). Pretty bad :(

I believe you need a Q-Tip, but if you take the unit in with you they usually have all the tips on display and you can test them

that's nothing unusual. NEC used almost for every device they made a different plug, just to prevent the using of one PSU with other devices.
