It begins again... but this time in reverse! We shall soon discover the worst PCE game of all time!

The Kung Fu has pretty decent graphics but the game play isn't too sharp.

I like all of those except Bikuri World and Shanghai. So I voted for the latter. :P

The Kung Fu - I wouldn't call any of 'em complete losers, but this one's a bit monotonous and boring.

What the hell is wrong with Shanghai?

That shitfist Kato & Ken takes the cake, for sure.

It's not a 'worst of these bad games' poll.

But what the hell is wrong with Kato & Ken?

I don't follow.   :?:

What isn't wrong with that trainwreck? It fails at everything, on every level, in every way.

This is just as much a "least-best" poll as a "worst" post. Picking a game doesn't mean it's bad.

I won't get into this or more so JJ & Jeff's awesomeness again. But even if it wasn't the great platformer that it is, I'd take a not-so-great platformer over a puzzle game in most cases, especially something I'm that much less likely to play than a more popular/western-friendly kind of puzzler.

Ask most people here and they'll say they pass up Shanghai not because it's not a good mahjong game, it's that it's a mahjong game at all.

Kato & Ken takes my vote. I want the $1.00 back that I put into that Kato & Ken / JJ & Jeff arcade console two decades ago.

Were there only 5 "worst-worthy" PCE games in 1987?

Well whatever it is, it's less popular than other genres to players outside of asia. Just like mahjong. :P

Bikkuri?!   I'll admit, Bikkuri is a shitfest of difficulty, but it's a great game. I had to go with Kung-Fu. I couldn't pick Shanghai, just because it's like solitaire - you like it, or you don't. BITD you didn't have basic games like that for free on the internets, so it definitley would attract some people. I voted for Kung-Fu because it was basically a large sprite showcase with little to no gameplay.

Well I hate flying potatoes :P

Flying donuts FTW!  :P

the PCE came out on october 30th. so yes, there where only 5 games released within this two month.

of course, (sprite-) size doesn't really matter and super mario bros. is still the far superior game of those two :P

I enjoyed them all, to be honest. Well, apart from Shanghai, but I never really took the time to get into it. I don't actually think Drunken Master is all that bad. Gives me a good laugh anyway.

Cumulatively, I've played FAR more of The Kung Fu than Super Mario Brothers in my life, and to be honest it's a toss up on which game I've had more fun with as both have their merits. The most fun I have had with smb is making the game completely freak out with a game genie. On the flip side, The Kung Fu wins for the cheesiness and kick ass music alone. It's like being in an old nonsensical cheesy-great kung fu flick. To be fair that's what the game was going for, a parody of many kung fu flicks. It was supposed to make you laugh as you played it and certainly, just about every aspect of the game can be tied to some element of the kung fu movies it parodies. (Yes even the flying "potatoes" :P) The game was not meant to be taken seriously, at least I think so. :P It even mocks itself by having the title "The Kung Fu". I don't think the sprite size or gameplay were ever supposed to be it's main selling points, but over time sprite size has become the only reason people note. Personally I believe it's a lot deeper than people think.

Basically if you don't understand all things it parodies and subtle humor, or if you can't appreciate the general atmosphere of the game you are missing most of what makes the game fun. Perhaps their fault was trying to be a little TOO clever, and unfortunately nobody really caught on.

I voted for Kung Fu because the only good thing about it is the sprite size. I rather get eye cancer from the Shanghai board than playing this fark game!

1987: Kato chan & Ken chan
1988: R-TYPE I
1989: Gunhed
1990: Super Star Soldier
1991: Magical Chase (close between also Coryyon and Jackie chan)
1992: Soldier Blade (Gate Of Thunder also this year!)
1993: Winds Of Thunder (same year as Dracula X and Sylphia, Doh!)
1994: Dynastic Hero (could change as some games from this year I'm still yet to play)
1995: Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire
