A thread on another site arguing about Contra 3 vs Contra Hard Corps prompted me to start this thread.
Explain why your choice is your favorite!
-
I voted Contra III (SNES) which is made of pure awesome and kicks so much ass that it should be illegal.
The motorcycle level where you have to jump on and off of flying rockets to hit the boss, and the helicopter escape at the very end were so cool.
-
uaah..so hard question. still didn't vote yet.
my 4 favs of ever:
contra AC
contra FC
contra spirits SFC
contra teh hardcorps (hardcore) MD
:edit: :for: :contar:
-
I voted for the original, 'cuz it's the only one I've played.
-
Contra III -- awesome action & great music to boot.
Haven't given Hard Corps a real good chance yet. But by the time I got around to trying this one, it wasn't fresh & new enough to really make it stand out over rest of the run & guns I had tried before it.
Never tried the other Contra games beyond the 16-bit era.

There is a Contra not listed in the poll! Believe it or not, they did a 3rd version of Alien Wars, this one for Gameboy Advance with the topdown levels taken out, & brand new sidescrolling levels! Anyways, for some reason, the 1st one on the NES(not the arcade) is my fav, with Super C, & Alien Wars after that.
-
it's a mix of contra spirits (SFC) and contra teh hadokoa (MD) and is called contra hard spirits. or in the western fields, contra advance: the alien wars EX.
-
MSX was an oddball release?
:(
i like Alien wars on SNES the most. Its like playing the original with a facelift
-
Contra for me the famicom version follow by the arcade version of super contra. Then i'd say for 3rd and 4th place Contra III follow by Contra Hard Corps.
-
I haven't voted, because I consider the Famicom and NES versions as being distinct and different. The Famicom version has an extra chip, which helps provide additional graphical effects as well as a between-stage map, a la Ghosts and Goblins.
-
Gunstar Heroes, Yo. One of my favorites, trumps Contra :P
Regarding Contra: I have played the NES (1, 2), SNES, and Gameboy version; the latter of which (operation C) I despise. I put dozens of hours into it.
I beat them when I was a kid, (except for operation C, which I sold on eBay last year) and haven't picked them up since. I have not played any of the Contra games after the SNES non-alien-wars version, so I have no opinion of them.
-
I voted for NES Contra, for it's the one I've played the most. I also played the heck out of Operation C back in the day, but not as much as good ol' Contra with my neighbor. Ah, good times, good times. :)

only tje jap. version (ok, you wrote famicom O:))

...and better game design, better level design, better stage design, better control, better sound effects, better music, better play mechanics, better pacing, better communication, interesting balance mechanics, better...

and slightly more complex musics, too.

Contra: Shattered Soldier for me. I really like how the weapons are handled. Always a blast to play.
-
I like the Playstation one (legacy of war) but it is a different kind of game.
aside from Contra 3, Hard Corps was the coolest one I think.
The characters were pretty bitchin
-
I like the Playstation one (legacy of war) but it is a different kind of game.
that is probably the worst product in history of games.
-
I voted Super Contra(arcade). I loved it so much when I was little I actually own the stand up arcade cabinet. Bought it way back in '95 at an auction(a real auction, not ePay) for $75 :D

i dunno, playing it with the 3d glasses and loud stereo sound when youre in 3rd grade is pretty bad the f*ck ass

You've obviously never played Contra Force for the NES.
-
Contra III and Super Contra (both NES and arcade) I liked the best.
In fact, let alone Shattered Soldier, I liked all of them before the 32 bit era when Apaloosa came along and f*cked everything up.

right ninja! those hungarian loosarz f*cked up the serie like noe one could do it badder!!
@jperryss, i've played that one. it's not a great product, but neither it's very bad.
@ark. may be yes. but watch it from a present view, its' just ubercrap. i was 21 when it came out and was already biased by the massive wave of ubercrappy 3D games, which overflooded the 32-bit market at that time, and apaloosa contra was no exception.
-
Contra III was the best in my opinion. Followed by the NES original. I've still never really given the Genesis version an honest shot- which I really should cause I'm sure I owe it to the series.
I love Gunstar heroes over any Contra game! But I still voted C3 as it is the best Contra game.
-
Didn't vote, because I haven't played all the games, but still, awesome thread, Joe! Contra kicks ass when handled right, and is the game that defines the run 'n gun genre.
I loved Contra 4 for DS. You could tell that the people working on it loved the classic games in the series, as should be made obvious from the following manual quote:
If you know someone else with Contra 4, you can celebrate the time-honored tradition of taking all the good items and advancing the screen too quickly while playing alongside a friend.

That's some funny shit right there. Ahhh the memories.
-
I don't understand how Contra III is beating Contra (NES) and Super C (NES). I was torn between the two NES titles, but ultimately went with Contra (NES), because it was an improvement over the arcade (sorry! the sprites were out of proportion to the play area in the arcade).
As for Contra III, you guys aren't forgetting about the dull overhead scenes, are you? Because they really drag the game down a notch. OH SNAP! Super C also had overhead areas... THAT'S WHY CONTRA (NES) kicks all sorts of ass :).
Contra Hard Corps is nice, but it's also the goofiest Contra out there (and that's saying something!).
The only Contra I haven't played is the GBA one, and that's because I really never played any of my GBA games. I actually forgot that I own GBA. I need to get one of those updated, illuminated screen Gameboys....
-
My favorite Contra game is Gryzor. :)
-

I guess I'm alone on this one. 8)
-
Isn't it kind of unfair to throw Gunstar Heroes into the poll against Contra? [-X
-
No.
I would've voted for any of the Metal Slug games if they were in it's place.
-
For me:
1.) Super Contra - Arcade
2.) Contra IV - DS
3.) Contra III: The Alien Wars - SNES
