Title: What is a PC-FX please
Post by: bacteria on June 11, 2009, 08:42:33 PM
Saw something about this a while back, what is a PC-FX and what does it do, and how does it compare to a Duo for example?

It's NEC's 32bit videogame console.  Hardware wise it destroys the Duo, with it's amazing colors, 7 background layers, and by far the best quality FMV of any 32bit console (true 30fps TV quality FMV). But the system was quite the flop, though it does have some true gems on it.  Try pc-fxworld for lots of info.

Its a white dating sim box, with some other sweet games:

Langrisser, Yuna, Zeroigar, Zenki

and did I mention yuna!?

:)

it doesnt.  Most of the games are FMV driven.

its a nice system, but lacks a good action game library.  There are some , but only a handful really.

Untrue. I can't really think of any PC-FX games that are FMV "driven" other than maybe that JB Harold game and the two FMV fighting games.

The FMV in PC-FX games is usually used in place of what would be still-art cutscenes on the Duo, instead opting for FMV anime cutscenes. The SEGA CD, on the other hand, is a great example of a system with a large library of FMV "driven" games.

This is true, the action genre is a bit lacking on the PC-FX, although that could be said of just about every genre; the system had a small game library overall.

Whatever the PSX can do FMV wise, the PC-FX can do it better ;)

agreed.  That was its selling point and the reason theres so much FMV excellence.

Though, FMV didnt take off as much as CGI 3d hoojoo did

Here's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYEvSbceK-Q&fmt=18) a vid of the opening FMV cinema of the game Zenki: Vajura Fight as well as a playthrough of one level with one of the characters.

i saw a copy of this in an ebay store and they're selling it for $350. is that reasonable for a pc-fx game??

i was thinking about getting a pc-fx, but of course i would need fun games to play that doesnt have any sexual themes attached to it. i know that's like 80% of the games, but Zenki: Vajura Fight looks perfect. any others?

Zenki is great but the price is a disaster.

Yuna is fun if you like Yuna/Digital Comics, and its not sex drugs and rock and roll oriented.

Tyoushin Henki Zeroigar is awesome.

There are some good RPGs (Last Imperial prince, Boundary Gate, blue breaker also but its got some dating elements to it.)

Der Langrisser for strategy excitement....

Return to Zork is a pretty nice adventure game.

Deep Blue Fleet

Though, the library really leans towards sim games.   They are the biggest genre on the PCFX.  There are at least enough non sim games to make it worth grabbing one as long as RPGs, and strategy style games are fun to you.  You got mahjong and Battle Heat (FMV fighter) too.

...and chip chan kick.  Its not sex related but theres panty shots.......

of like 11 year olds.... >_>

You can find a torrent or two around with some pcfx games to try out before you commit to buying the expensive ones.... They are burnable and playable on a real one (Use high quality CDRs or youll break your system/mess it up).  Or you can use Mednafen

i know that's like 80% of the games

I know I sound like a broken record correcting people on this, but Hentai games comprise like 4% of the PC-FX library.

after going through the pc-fx database and game overviews, i pleasantly realized you are right! it's good news because even though the library is small, there seems to be an interesting selection of games. of course some of the ones that interest me are the most are high-priced  #-o.

Yeah, the library is less than 100 games total, but is rich in RPGs and the quality-to-crap ratio is excellent. There are few true "clunkers" that I've encountered so far in my FX experience. The downfall, like you mentioned, is many of the best games are way overpriced. Zenki: Vajura Fight, for example, is a fantastic game but definitely shouldn't cost more than $50 though it commonly fetches hundreds of dollars.
