Is it worth it buy a PC engine core grafx without intention of buying cd-rom adapter? What games would you recommend for the PC engine?
-
In my opinion, no. You're leaving most of the best games for the format if you stick only to the card games.
-
Yes it's definitely worth it if you have no intention of getting a CD-ROM, the CoreGrafx is the best setup for playing only HuCards. There's so much variety that it depends on the genres you enjoy, but here are some good and cheap PC Engine HuCard games-
Nectaris
Dungeon Explorer
Adventure Island
Neutopia
Neiutopia II
Areoblasters
Ninja Spirit
Parodius
Alien Crush
Devil Crash
Darius Plus
R-Type I
R-Type II
Super Star Soldier
Sidearms
Street Fighter II'
Makyo Densetsu
Ankoko Densetsu
Blue Blink
Bomberman '94
PC Genjin -any/all of them
Bloody Wolf
Just make sure that you don't buy any U.S. TurboGrafx-16 HuCards/Turbochips since they are not compatible and converters are way too expensive. If you do decide at some point that you must play TG-16 HuCards, just buy a TG-16 system for them.
When you're ready for PC Engine CD-ROM games, just buy a PCE Duo R/RX system at that time.
-
black tiger answered that perfectly imho :)
both systems are cheap too.
-
Indeed, as B_T already answered, there are many HuCards that justify the purchase of a CoreGrafx. Lots and lots.
In fact, too many people discount the HuCards in favor of the CD-ROM games, IMO. It's a damn shame. :)
What genre(s) do you find particularly interesting?
If you dig shoot-em-ups, then it's a no-brainer. CoreGrafx = happiness.
If you only like RPG's / action-RPG's, well, then, you'll be lusting for the CD-ROM titles...
-
There are still a lot of cool HuCard RPGs and questy-type games, you'd just need a Tennokoe Bank 2 for save files.
-
As Termis noted, you'd be missing some of the best games on the system, but as Black Tiger noted, there's loads of fun to be found on HuCards. And once you're thoroughly addicted to the PCE, you can always pick up a briefcase or upgrade to a Duo.
-
Personally I would save the money and skip the coregrafx and use that money for a Duo. You don't have to buy cd games right away. However, if you are 100% sure you will not want to play any cd based games then yes go for a Coregrafx. All the games Black Tiger listed are definitely one's you will want to pick up first. Great titles that go for a great price for buyers. Have fun.

Sure why not? You can get a PCE for about $40 if you keep you eyes open.
Galaga '88/90
Splatterhouse
Ninja Warriors
Cadash
Black Tiger did an awesome job with this one. The duo is great, but you can get a PC Engine/Coregrafx for 1/3 of the price of a duo.

In general I agree with you. But if $$$ is a factor, then I say "Go HuCard!" :)
Later, hopefully, he would be able to re-sell his CoreGrafx to recoup costs for a DUO (or, alternatively, he could keep his CoreGrafx and add SuperCD).
-
I'm just going to buy a CoreGrafx due to many of rpg I'm interested in were also released on the super famicom system. Also, I can't the see point in spending $200 for a PC engine duo when they very few cd games I would buy. How many Hucard games were released for the PC engine?

PCE Daisakusen!! (http://www.pcedaisakusen.net/2/27/list-games--1-1-100-name-asc-0.htm) says that there are 301 PCE HuCards, though that includes the tennokoe bank and system cards.

They're not only too expensive, but they won't work on a normal PC Engine anyway. Unlike Japanese PC Engine games, US TurboGrafx games are region-locked as well as being pin-incompatible. You have to not only get a converter, but mod the PC Engine in order to play US games. It's just way too much trouble, overall.

I am not interested in the CD games so I bought a PC Engine off of this site. Now I just need the Tennoke 2 memory Bank

The only problem with getting a HuCard only system is that if you decide to go to CD later there is no real way to move into the CDROM world and somehow take your initial investment with you. In other words, a (failure prone) CDROM attachment costs about the same as a Duo R, so your original PCE will just sit there collecting dust. I've had several PCE/TG-16s over the years but always the CD systems. The Super CD era was the one that produced the largest selection of the best (and now most affordable) games for the PCE. The initial investment in a Duo is a lot higher, but totally worth it.
On the other hand its absolutely true that HuCards should not be written off. I did this back in the day and only in recent years am I discovering how many kick-ass HuCards there are. Its just that....well, there is a big difference bewteen early PCE games like Wonder Momo and the later stuff like Sapphire. For several reasons HuCards fell out of favor with developers so there aren't as many HuCards that well represent the "later era" of PCE as there are Super CDs. For every full on, later generation HuCard soft like Bomberman '94 there are twenty Gate of Thunders.
Of course once you get hooked you won't mind having loads of multiple redundant machines. :) Currently I have a PCE w/CDROM2 and Super System Card, which I love because...its just really f*cking cool, but my main "work unit" is a Duo R.
Oh, and if budget is a concern then stay away from the US stuff. In the HuCard library there are very few games worth paying the insane US premium for. Mainly Military Madness, Neutopia 1/2, and Dungeon Explorer, maybe something else (Final Lap Twin, World Court Tennis). The rest basically don't have any text worth translating anyway and in the case of many games are already in English.

Bomberman '94
Bomberman '93
:)
I prefer '93, but suggest '94 as a first off to wow people that aren't yet fans of the series since it's more advanced visually and has the least hardcore story mode while still being one of the greatest games of all time.
-
Yes. Bomberman 94 is soooo good.

You'll have tons of fun with HuCards. Don't forget Blodia! :)
