Let me first start off by stating that I really liked "Golden Axe" when it first came out. The genesis version was pretty rocking and I have many fond memories playing it over and over again with each character.
So when I saw Golden Axe up on Ebay for the PC-Engine, naturally I was interested. "One of my favoirte games on my favorite system? And it's even on CD! This MUST be good!" So I hit the 'Buy it now' button and shelled out about $30 for it without giving the price a second thought. I mean, I was going to get GA on my TG-16! What's there NOT to be excited about!
A week later it arrived. I eagerly rushed upstairs and popped the disc into my beloved Turbo and fired it up. WOW! Nice cinemas! They show how Death Adder was born and everything! The character select screen looked promising as well. (Although I don't remember Ax Battler being quite so anime looking, but hey, it's Japanese.) Then I was treated to another nice introductory cinema. So far, so good!
Right about this point in game development, the programmers must have decided to quit. Either that, or they are the most sadistic SOBs that ever walked the face of the earth. The game is practically unplayable. The controls are horrible, the character animation is looks like it was done using two frames only and there is massive slow down whenever more than three things are on the screen at once. And forget about getting past the first level as the bosses are insanely difficult.
I'd challenge anybody to to try to beat this game, but I wouldn't want to wish this sort of steaming pantload upon anybody. I suppose the CD music was nice, but nice music and pretty cinemas do not make up rest of this failed abortion of an acrade port. Save your money, boys and girls, it's just not worth it. If anything, I learned a valuable lesson in researching a game prior to purchase.
I'd rate 3\10. It got two extra points for nice cinemas and good music.
-
yes, this is a sad game. I might take you up on your challenge to beat the first boss! i've listened to the red book tracks and there are a LOT of cinema scenes! What a goddam shame.
Speaking of bad games, I have Altered Beast on CD... unfortunately, there is hardly any red book audio! I can't remember if I ever played the CD version of AB, but I have played the HuCard version via ME -- not too good. And that's taking into account that AB was a flawed game to begin with.
-
Altered Beast was a crappy game even in its "prime". I have no idea why it spawned so many ports.
-
AB definately qualifies as a 'total failure' as well. I've got the HuCard version and I find that is almost as unplayable as GA is. But at least I made it to the second level on AB.

I know how bad this is supposed to be, but I can't help wanting it. Wow a "hardtype" version of Golden Axe with cutscenes! :D
-
I loved Golden Axe in the arcade. A friend of mine sat one afternoon and beat the whole thing. It's a shame the PCE version sucks so badly.
-
Golden Axe was one of my very first CD games. After getting ripped for $500 from a store adverting in EGM, I was still dying to get a Turbo CD.
The local electronics store in my home town had a Turbo CD and Fighting Street and Monster Lair.
But after a visit to japan, they brought back Golden Axe, Side Arms Special and Super Darius.
Once I managed to order another Turbo CD from Radio Shack, I Golden Axe and Super Darius(2 or 3 months before the actual Turbo CD arrived) and later Side Arms Special.
I used to look through the manuals everyday imagining what the games would be like and wondering why we couldn't get nice color art filled manuals over here.
Before this, Golden Axe was the one game that the store had opened to demo the system.
Everyone was blown away by the overall pesentation(menus and such), especially the CD voice(more so than the cinemas). And even the Genesis lovers(during the console wars) wouldn't knock the in-game content too much since even they understood how limited the original Golden Axe is gameplay-wise anyways.
Like all Turbo games I owned, I played the game to death. After mastering it, I would play through and finish it again and again.
The gameplay is pretty much intact, but some of the enemies are too cheap and Death Adder in particular is just ridiculous.
Its easiest with Tyris, not too bad with Axe Battler but near impossible with Gilius Thunderhead.
The ending cinemas are satisfying but not too long and are similar. But at least each character does get their own ending.
I don't know if the developers had access to the original content that went into the arcade original or anything, but it is unfortunate that the didn't take advantage of the PC Engine's abilities to produce what should've been the definitive version of the game.
I still love it, flaws and all. But knowing the games as well as I do, I realize that the aesthetics aren't THAT far off, the gameplay is more or less intact except for the excess cheap spots. I've always found the biggst short-coming to be the sound effects.
I'm just glad that I was able to experience it as I did back in the day so I can appreciate itto this day. Otherwise I wouldn't give it a chance either.
However, the game is worth it for the soundtrack alone if you're a 'classic' arcade fan.

yep, i did the exact same thing a few years ago.
i would go so far as to compare the PC engine Golden Axe with the Master System version in the gameplay department. choppy as hell and a pain in th ass to play. when i got my SMS in 92 with Golden Axe i did have some fun playing it once i got the controls down and beat it a few times.
if you take away the cinema scenes and narrow the character selection down to just Ax Battle they're pretty much the same game, even the graphics.
-
I still haven't played Golden Axe for PCE CD yet, but I'd love to try it.
I've only played the PCE version of Altered Beast on ME and I can honestly say it's not as bad as you guys put it to be. To me at least, the graphics look better than the Genesis version and I can't remember if the sound was better, but I'd probably say so since I love the PCE PSG. There were two things that sucked about the PCE version though and that was the controls and the fact that it didn't have the cheesy voices (at least I don't remember it having them)! The sucky thing ab00t the controls is that you have to press UP to jump and that's quite annoying compaired to the Genesis version. It's not terrible though once you get used to it. Also can't you use a 3 or 6 button pad for the PCE version of Altered Beast?
And to people who have played both the PCE and PCE CD versions of Altered Beast, is the CD version better in any ways or is it the exact same as the HuCard?
-
You know Altered Beast gets a lot of shit, but it did it's job back in the day. I remember all my friends in grade school were totally blown away by how awesome and badass the game was and wanted Genesis systems for Christmas. Hell I still think it's a cool game.
I always wished they would have made a sequel where you could actually go at your own pace and explore levels as a beast though, that would have ruled. I'm half tempted to buy the new PS2 version even after hearing some so-so reviews of it, I just need to find an import copy cheap.

I always thought it had terrible gameplay. The graphics and monsters were cool though. It was a decent game, but nothing I got excited about.

I still think Altered Beast is a badass game up to today. It was really sweet when I was a kid and seeing the buff dudes take steroids and turn into monsters. That was ab00t the coolest thing a kid could ever see.

Everyone's got their own opinions and their right to their opinions but I will stay steadfast to mine which says that AB is one of the grandfathers of suck. :D
Anyone ever play Time Killers? I'm just glad that one wasn't ported to the PCE (the Genesis got a port, which sucked even worse than the suck-ass arcade version). The grand poo-bah overlord godfather of suck: Time Killers. :D

HA. Took me a minute to remember that game. I had to look it up on Google. I only played it once, but it was a total turd of a game. :) I had almost stripped it of my memory until you reminded me of the suckitude.
-
True suck never dies!

I actually "used" to love Time Killers back in the day, I'm not totally sure why though, I used to have the Gen version which was pretty weak.

PS2 version isn't bad at all.
I love it

For some reason it seems like there was some talk of porting Time Killers to the Duo at some point.
-
maybe this is a stupid idea, maybe it's impossible, i dunno.
But from what it sounds like, the pce ver of Golden Axe sounds like it has a lot going for it, with a few minor setbacks. Would there be anyway to hack the ISO and fix the problems, making this game as great as it should have been?
...just a thought.
-
It's possible, but a more feasible idea would be to hack out all the good stuff (cinemas, music, etc) and replace the gameplay itself with an entirely new engine. I've never played the PCE port of Golden Axe so I don't know what kind of corrections would have to be made but perhaps it's something I'd be willing to look into in the future. :)

HEY!!!!! STOP KNOCKING ON TIME KILLERS!!!!
Time Killers had really good play mechanics, left arm, right arm, left leg, right leg attacks, plus both arm or both leg attacks, along with a head attack and taunt.A good amount of special moves, decaps and cutting off arms anytime in the fight. The game had more play depth then Mortal Kombat, and was made in the U.S. It was also one of the first arcade games to boast 32-bit sound,in stereo, when most games had sad stereo sound,or worse, were in mono.
I love Time Killers,Bloodstorm, and the arcade version of Street Fighter the movie game.Strata knew how to make a good fighter, and you can either like theirs or hate them.I think it depends on the person. If you only like SNK/Capcom fighters, then yea,I could see how Stratas games could turn you away.Blood, gore, vibrant colors,32-bit audio, large sprites, lots of special moves.......yea,who wanted all that back in 92-95....
-

Oh all that is fine and good, except that the horrible controls made the all those moves null and if it doesn't control well then the rest is just icing on a stale cake....
-
UGH you mentioned two of the worst fighting games of all time: Time Killers AND Street Fighter: The Movie. UGH! Never played Bloodstorm though so I can only go by the other reviewers I read that say the game sucked even more ass than Time Killers...
Time Killers had some of the worst animation I've ever SEEN. Games from 10 years prior had smoother animation than that game. :(
But uhh...I guess you seem to like technical highpoints rather than a game that's actually fun to play and doesn't look like something that crawled out of a monkey's ass...well, to each their own. :D
Mortal Kombat was also made in the US. :P
-
Actually Street Fighter: The Movie wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be when I first played it for Saturn because all the hardcore fighting game fans I talked to said it sucked. It plays very similar to Street Fighter II games (though not quite as accurate and well, but close enough) but just has really dorky real life graphics like in Mortal Kombat.
<ehem, cough>KoF'98 is the best fighting game ever made!</ehem, cough>
-
Street Fighter the movie game for Saturn and Playstation was different then the arcade game. The arcade game was infact way different. The home game was by Capcom. It played like Super SF 2 Turbo.
The arcade game played like SF meets Killer Instinct meets Time Killers. It had tons of secrets, like a trick where on the Vega cage stage you could do a button combination and crowd members would blow up.You could do wonderful combos, and air juggles.I used to be able to do a 20 hit combo with Vega on the game. The game was very dark image wise, with really cool backgrounds, and the blood was plenty.
-
Play it on Mame.Mame runs it.
-
Mame runs all the Strata games for that matter.
-
I never had a single problem pulling off any move in Time Killers.Nor Sf The Movie arcade game.Nor Blood Storm for that matter. And none of my friends complained either.I was best with Rancid or Mantaz in Time Killers. In SF the Movie, the arcade version, which I will say again is very different then the home version,I was wonderful with Vega and Akuma and Blade.
All the people who complain about Time Killers or Blood Strom I think are like the same kids whose ass I kicked at the arcade on those games. They bitched to no end.I would usually finish someone off by the 10 sec of the round doing a dizzy combo and decap,or total slice dice kill"that means both arms and head came off".And you know what, they came back for more anyway, why?Because those game were FUN.The player didnt have to be a SF wiz to play them, they for the most part could jump on and just play. This applied to MK as well.Where I lived more people played the Time Killers cab then the MK one though.Nobody played the SF 2 Champ cab at that point in time.
I bet you Time Killers haters hated Way of the Warrior also....
Game Fan was the only mag that loved Way of the warrior,Blood storm, and the arcade SF the Movie. And you know what?Game Fan was the only mag back then that wasnt in a companies pocket,it was the best mag,and it didnt spread lies, create rumors, and have crappy blured screen pics.
Go figure.I bet you Time Killer/Blood Storm haters love EGM and GAME Pro too huh????
-
Wow, that was the most one-sided, horribly jaded post I've ever seen you write. :D How do you know Game Fan wasn't paid a large sum of money by Strata to totally kiss their ass and write up such shockingly great reviews when everyone else insisted that these games sucked donkey eggs?
I hated all the magazines anyways and still do.
Makes me wonder what kind of deranged people live in your town...
-
This conversation has decomposed into a steaming pile. The games were not good, by most peoples accounting of quality.
Fine you liked a horribly junky game. You feel the game magazine industry had set out a vendeta (paid for by Capcom of course) against said terrible game. Thats fine and dandy. You liked the game. Fine. I thought it should have its own landfill next to E.T.'s landfill. Big deal.
I mean everyone has there gaming skeletons in there proverbial closets. I mean by the average gamers accounting of quality we ALL as Turbo fans play games that suck.....
-
The stupidest part about Time Killers (other than the HORRIBLE character design) was that you could kill your opponent one round, then they're back alive for the next. Mortal Kombat at least made sense, you could only kill your opponent after the fight was over. I remember even when I was a kid I thought that was f'n stupid.
-

Did you ever read any DIE HARD GameFan mags? They were about the only mag people left who covered import stuff heavy,as well as NeoGeo full reviews,Pc-Engine,PC-FX.Your insane to knock that mag!!!!
They were the only mag to review Strider Arcade Card version,as well as the SNK ports, with a full review, tons of nice res pics and what not.It was the only mag to even get respect from Next Generation, which never knocked any other mags itself, but would openly admit that the guys at Gamefan were great. And you know what,GameFan is gone due to money problems, why???Because they were not on the take. They had a great review crew, each showing their own opinions on games,if they game really did suck, they ripped it a new one in full detail, telling of all the weak points they felt it had, with 2 pages chock full of pics, and they actually cared about game makers like Treasure and Wolf Team.Do you even remember EGM covering the Turbo/Pc-Engine after the US death?Same for GamePro??? No I didnt think so.Am I really that old that only guys like me remember things like this?Jesus Im only 28.

Funny you say this, capcom in the US failed to sue Data East over Fighters History and how it played, and you should know that if they had won the court case, they would have went after SNK next,as alot of ex-Capcom employees had defected to SNK,most of them infact worked on Samurai Showdown,as they were openly accusing SNK,Konami"because of the Turtles fighting games using half quarter motions to toss projectiles",Data East and whoever else.
And I never said Capcom went after Strata, they infact liked them alot, and wanted the Strata group to do the SF The Movie Arcade game, gave them full rights to do what they wanted with the arcade version and what not,and make the game how they saw fit.You know this wasnt normal at all for Capcom,as SF was their cashcow, and they could have done the game themselves. For the record again,I did not say that Capcom paid anyone to give Time Killers or Blood Storm a bad review, but I DID say that the only mags who gave the games BAD reviews were the terribly sold out Shushi X crew and the Frog Boys at Lame Pro.
The same guys who dumped on all the systems we love to play, who gave up on them before we did,and who didnt even bother to cover any wonderful imports that were still being released.Maybe it was because they had to devote 5 pages to covering crap games like Johnny Bazookatone on PSX all the time, who knows, you tell me?Need anothe rexample,Ninja Masters on Neogeo,EGM gave it terrible reviews, knocking the animation, audio, gameplay, and everything else.If you have a NeoGeo,MVS at least,Im sure you have ran across a cart of it at one time or another, and know way better. The game was wonderful. Now its one of the hardest AES carts to get.GO FIGURE!
-
Incase you decided to look up info about it,here is the court info youd need:
Capcom U.S.A., Inc. v. Data East Corp., 1994 WL 1751482 (N.D. Cal. 1994)
That will get you what you need to know about the case.
-
Michael, just out of curiousity why do you not put a space after commas and periods? It makes your posts really hard to read.

With a 9 year old boy,7 year old girl, and 1 year old boy running about, remembering to do these things tend to slip my mind.

I really don't see where this conversation fits into the overall conversation of crappy lame games.
The point is, everyone likes what they like, but if your gonna like crap then your gonna get crap for it.
And on that note, I would like to change the direction of this topic....
"WHAT IS THE WORST GAME YOU LIKE THAT EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD THINKS IS CRAP?" (so now we can toss crap on everyone and not have to have people feeling left out  )
Mine, would be...well I only enjoy games that game reviewers think are great  ....(note....that WAS sarcasm  )

You named a few games that were really good, I don't know why anyone wouldn't like these games. Well, a couple are pretty much rip offs of other games but still good?

I like games a lot actually. But, I am very, very picky....I like what I like, and I don't like what I don't.
-
I remember Shatterhand...one of the very few NES games I really tried to conquer but never did. And I wasn't knocking the mag that you sound like you sleep with at night as if it's your little binky, I'm explaining to you that you have no idea what goes on behind the scenes so to arbitrarily say that they weren't sucking off a load from a different company doesn't mean they actually weren't. And like I said...I hated all game magazines because every one of them were nothing more than full-colour spinjobs, catering to whatever genre or console they liked best...INCLUDING Gamefan. I'll be the first to say that EGM was among the worst for this kind of favouritism (they knocked a lot of Neo Geo games left and right) but they all sucked when it all comes down to it. And I'm 30, btw. :P
EDIT: Oh ya...Tempest 2000 was awesome. :D

I have recently bought and played this game for the first time and it kept me almost in some kind hypnotic trance. :D
And i didn't use drugs.
Great game!

See, now a game like Time Killers puts it all in perspective.
At least a super-simple basic game like Altered Beast is playable, the aesthetics cool enough for the time and makes sense as a coin-up.
Truly bad games have little or no redeeming qualities.
-
Night Creatures!
I only commited myself to beating it because of the challenge(and it's still a Turbo game), so I could at least tell myself that I actually did it.
A few years later an online friend commented on it saying how noone could beat it and how he'd give anything to see the ending.
So I mapped out the game again, making a walkthrough in the process and sent him a VHS tape of the last area and ending.
Although before beating it, I still thought that it had a lot of pottential had it been developed properly, learning to compensate for the game's shortcomings gameplay wise has made me appreciate it all the more.
It, even more so than Shape Shifter was Symphony Of The Night years before SOTN/NITML even came out.
Honestly, if the game wasn't such a challenge, I wouldn't respect it for what it is the way I do.
-
Night Creatures!

I always thought that one would be fun if it was just a bit more possible or played a bit better. I wonder if anyone could hack it to make the controls a bit better? Heck i'd settle for an invincibility hack. Same thing with ghoul's and ghosts on the supergrafx.

So sence you never read any game mags, how did you learn about new games coming out?Did you get news letters from someone on a Unix cash account or something who lived in Japan?Did you just have to check your local Toys R Us to see what new Turbo games they had?Go to Wal-Mart alot for the new Nes titles?
That would blow.
BTW GameFan covered every system with as much detail as possible, even the FM Towns Marty.I dont remember them sticking to just any certain one or 2 favs.
And no,I dont have any GameFan mags anymore,I gave them to a local game store owner here in town a year ago.He gave me a import Dreamcast in the box complete. It was the special box with the stupid looking Sega employee on it who got his ass kicked in a tv ad over there before the DC was released.it was the "We may be down but not out" ad.
I fetched over 100 bucks for that thing,so I was pretty happy with the trade.I never slept with a mag of any kind under my binky,if I did I wouldnt have kids now ,or a life for that matter.Speaking of having a life, when is your shareware title for Magic Engine going to be done?Is it going to be free,or am I going to have to pay 10 bucks to get the full game?
-
Black_Tiger, you wouldn't by any chance be Kabuki from the old Turbo Grafx Network, would ya :D He's the only one I knew of that made a walkthru for Night Creatures & Neo Metal Fantasy, plus, low n' behold, your avatar is Kabuki! I'm Projectblowed_mc over there, I'm doing music for the Frozen Utopia group now, we got some great stuff planned!
-
O yea,I kind of noticed, its basically just the 2 of you with negative replies back towards me here Nodtveidt and lord_cack.So besides making shareware together, planning on how best you can get around to making the next Zelda clone by rehashing the same old sprites from the last 2,oops I mean Netopia 3,and spending your time "together" trying to knock me on this forum here,am I to assume you guys do more then that?Do you do everything as a team?
And sence we are on the subject of bad games, untill yours "finally ever" get released, come out as a download or whatever, how do we know yours isnt going to be the next worst suck ass game ever made?Right there with Turrican,or TV Sports Basketball,or the U.S. Last Battle?Heck your crap could even end up being voted worse on here, then maybe even Street Combat on Snes, which Im sure some here remember,as it was Ranma 1/2 raped of all its worth. But hey, sence both of you are true judges on whats bad, maybe you will overcome all this and they will blow our minds away, with a truely great story, graphics with great animation, voice acting, music, control, and what ever else you know must be put in there to make it a "whats according to you" great game.
Well see soon wont we....
-
I'm also apart of Frozen Utopia, & I'm not bashing you or anything. I didn't think they we're but I didn't really pay attention to their posts. As for games we got coming, he he, we got some nice stuff coming :D I'm not saying I'm the best composer ever, I wish I could be up there with Ryo Yonemitsu, but, everything takes time. And my stuff is pretty good good. Our first game, Mysterious Song, it's cool, I like the story n all, so it won't be voted as a sack of suck. Neutopia 3 is just plain gonna kick arse, not to mention Rudoshyn, Dragon Arm, & whatever else we decided on, as time goes on. Saying our games are gonna suck is like going up to BT Garner & spitting in his face. Anyways, I ain't mad, I'm sure you'll enjoy the games :D
-
We wont know or play anything untill they are done will we.
I do however think that it would be a sad turn of events if you got a project done and everyone however did think that the overall product did suck, and everyone bashed your game here infront of everyone..Id hate to see that happen to anyone. The last homebrew project I ever burned off made me sick, that was super hu-card.Barely anything on it even worked without major bugs. Are you having that problem right now? From the tech side of things,I have been wondering how you will overcome these problems. Also, anyone ever thought of trying to contact Victor Ireland of WD to maybe get input on programing tricks of the hardware?
-
On Mysterious Song, there's no bug problems that I know of. We're waiting for the cinemas to be finished, & getting ready to do voice acting, but just looking for the right people, for the right roles. As for Neutopia 3, I've done several songs, 2 are finished. But we haven't officially started working on it, until Mysterious Song is complete. I haven't seen any tiles, sprites or mock up's for the levels, but alot of the basic gameplay & level ideas are done. It's gonna go beyond the other 2 games. Victor, from my own experience has been hard to directly get ahold of. The only homebrew games I've played are the ones BT released, Meteor Blaster DX & Implode. I can't wait for them to finish PC Gunjin, that game looks great!
-
Well well well Michael, it seems you have just a minor temper problem here. :D To clarify a few things...
I used to read the game magazines. Don't confuse my dislike of them with ignorance; you cannot hate that which you do not know. The reason I didn't like them is BECAUSE I read them and didn't like the crap they'd spew time and time again.
When it comes to coding the PCE, bt taught me most of what I know. I already knew how to program in C and some of the basics of the console, but bt really taught me how to work with HuC in particular; things to look out for, optimization techniques, avoiding flicker and slowdown, and too many other things to list here. I've also been around Dave Shadoff and have picked up a few things from him, as well as Chris Covell and especially GravisZero. So it's not like you're talking to some acolyte here; I know my stuff and I put it to good use rather than sitting on my ego like some others I've seen.
Where did you get the idea that Mysterious Song was shareware? That's never been written by me or anyone else and isn't written on the website. I've already said that the first two games at least will be freely available for download but also purchasable if we can have them pressed properly. This isn't exactly news.
Your list of games...well, I'll take a look at each one for the hell of it. :D
Death Duel: Never heard of it.
Pit Fighter: I used to play this game on the arcade a lot. The game had poor execution but was sorta satisfying to knock the hell out of The Warrior and have all the money flying everywhere. :D
Space Gun: Never heard of it.
Narc: This game was pretty cool. I didn't play it much but I remember it having very crisp graphics for its time.
Sam and Max hit the road: Never played it.
Metal and Lace 1 and 2: Ditto.
Party Breakers: Ditto again.
Robocop: Played it whenever I had the chance. :D Got the MAME ROM now and have finally beaten the game...about 30 times. :)
Bad Dudes: This was OK...nothing stood out about it, pretty cut-n-dry stuff.
Way of the Warrior: Never played it.
Crash and Burn: Ditto.
Defender 2000: Hrm...I don't remember this one very well...
Tempest 2000: 110% Badass. :D Played this on my Jaguar for hours on end until I finally beat the game in Beast mode. :D
Golvelious: Never even heard of it...
Starblade: Ditto.
Galaxy Fight: UGH! Suck-ass. One of the largest flaws in the NeoGeo game library; even KOF'94 didn't suck THIS bad.
Hellfire: Dunno this game.
Aero Blasters: Played this for a bit; was interesting but never got far in it.
Magic Swords: I believe that's "Magic Sword"...played the SNES port before the arcade version though; it doesn't do the arcade version full justice but it isn't a bad game regardless; both versions are pretty great. :)
Evil Zone: Never heard of it.
Riot Zone: This game wasn't done very well but that didn't stop me from beating it scores of times. Badass soundtrack. :D Riot City is arguably better. (Gimme a fscking break...Tony and Hawk?)
Blazing Tornado: Never heard of it.
Stral: Ditto.
Blue Lightning: Never played it but thought it looked sorta like an After Burner clone.
Ninja Gaiden arcade game: Have played it a few times (as well as its counterpart, Shadow Warriors). Never got far in it. It's ok.
Rastan 1 and 2 arcade.: Umm...? Don't know them.
Oops, missed a few...
Silphead for the PC: Never played it. Is this the same as the Sega CD "Silpheed"?
Ultra Vortek: ???
Shatterhand: Loved it. :D
The Guardian Legend: Never played it.
Air Busters: ???
Shock Troopers 2nd squad: Never heard of it.
Beachhead: Ditto.
T2 for the Nes: Yuck.
Road Avenger: ???
Time Gal: Hate the fact that they renamed it for the dumbass American populace who was so hocked up on "political correctness" at the time. Bullshit in an aeresol can.
Okay well, have you any more personal attacks, Michael? No one was knocking you at all; just mentioning that you like a game that everyone else thinks sucks. :D My binky comment, which was satirical, seems to be what's now got you on some kind of crusade but hey, I'll let you be the judge of your own attitude. If you're 28 years old, I'd think you'd have a better grip than that. :D
For the record: Mysterious Song is devoid of bugs in its present form. I've put it through about 60 hours of testing and retesting (I used to be a software beta tester for several dev groups so I know what to look for and what to try to break) and once it's finished completely, it goes to a team of beta testers for 1 month before it's considered release-worthy (most dev houses back in the day would give two or three weeks for testing; bugs often slipped through because of this shorter window). While you may have seen a homebrew crapfest done up by some half-wit out for his fifteen minutes of fame, this is a large group with a lot of very dedicated people in it who are all very talented at what they do and love gaming and this console. It would be a severe disgrace to our beloved console and the entire PCE scene to allow a shitty game to be released. I think even you, Michael, can agree to that. :)
-
Im wondering what systems you have owned?
Hellfire is a shooter:Pc Engine/Genesis,and arcade.
Beachhead was for the C64,and had many types of "mini games"in it I guess you could say.
Shock Troopers 2nd Squad is a NeoGeo game,a really good one for that matter, how could you have missed that one?
Air Busters/Aero Blasters, depends on what system you have it on,or what arcade board for that matter. Its a shooter by Interstate Kaneko.
The Guardian Legend.Nes game by Compile.Shooter/adventure action game.Borderbund published it in the US.
Ultra Vortek was the only good fighting game for the Jaguar.
Silphead for the PC.GameArts pc shooter brainchild. It was better then the Sega Cd game.
Rastan 1 and 2???? By Taito. How could you have missed these in the arcades???
Ninja Gaiden arcade game.Playing it on Mame doesnt count for squat.the game had a special joystick to help with grabbing bars and doing certain swing attacks. It doesnt feel the same on Mame.
Strahl and Road Avenger, both laserdisc titles in the arcade, also released on Saturn import, both games, and Road being on Sega Cd/PSX also.Strahl was released on 3DO here in the US.
Blazing Tornado was made by Human, same company behind Vasteel and the Firo Pro games. On Saturn and arcade in Japan.
Evil Zone was on PSX,played like a fighting game being watched on TV with insane crap inbetween rounds reminding you of Japanese action and monster shows.
Starblade by Namco???? yet again I have to ask how you missed this one.Even if being put to sleep by Tekken 5 you still could get a glimps of the game at the begining.
Golvelious was a adventure game for the Master System by Compile.
Defender 2000 on Jaguar, made by Lamasoft. One of the best Jaguar games made, yet again how could you have missed this one if your a experienced gamer.
Way of the Warrior by Naughty Dog.For the 3DO.Great fighting game with huge sprites and crap going on screen.White Zombie soundtrack.Needs a capcom pad or arcade stick though,or even the pad that came with the FZ-10 system. The FZ-1 pad sucked for fighting games, and many thought they couldnt do the moves in that game because of the game itself, untill new pads came out, that allowed perfect handling of the games moves.
Crash and Burn was the launch 3DO system title.Racing game where you kill the other racers if you cant beat them by other means.Back when it came out, there was nothing like it,period.Virtua Racing was flatshaded polygons, and couldnt compete with it graphically, and Crash and Burn was damn fun to play.Crystal Dynamics made it.
Sam and Max hit the road: Lucas Arts game, one of the best for that matter.
Metal and Lace 1 and 2: hentai fighting game sfor Pc,but they actually play very good.
Party Breakers, one of the Queen of Hearts games for PC,fighting game.If you have not played it,your missing out.Its that simple.
Space Gun,arcade gun game.Good graphics and sound, gave a creepy feeling.Aliens themes abound in the game.Fun to play.
Death Duel for the Genesis.Made by Razorsoft if I remember right.Nice violent game.Plays like a gun shooter or something liek Lethal inforcers, but you moves from side to side, and you only have one enemy to kill. You are in a mech suit and are basically in a duel match against aliens and crap and you kill them dead.Blowing off limbs and what not, going for the kill.Very fun,and great for its time.
-
From the pics, the game you are making looked like another in a long slew of unfinished shareware games slapped on a 1000 games on one cd for pc.This is from looking at the pics.Im being honest that I am not impressed with the graphics. But if your happy with how it looks, that is what matters,as its your project.
-
I thought you might like to read this, sence it might give you a idea of a couple of "true and real" gamers opinions might be like regarding your up and coming game.
here you go straight from the Yahoo archive.
quoth0X : hey you there?
Amakusa: yea
quoth0X : wow
quoth0X : suprised you are still up
Amakusa: fixing to go to bed actually
Amakusa: just checking up on pcengine fx forums
quoth0X : ah i see
quoth0X : yeah i didn't get any of the last stuff you wrote at all
quoth0X : i logged on specifically to see if i got any e-mail on yahoo, and any offline messages, and i waited 10 seconds before closing it out, since none popped up
quoth0X : i put that hard drive in the case earlier
Amakusa: i sent a link to a import playying cart for sega cd
Amakusa: one of those datel carts
Amakusa: you missed it
Amakusa: its over now
quoth0X : send me a link or the item # i want to look at it
quoth0X : how much?
Amakusa: i am not sure
Amakusa: it ended friday nite i think
quoth0X : you remember the subject title?
Amakusa: no
quoth0X : damnit
Amakusa: i wasnt watching it or anything
quoth0X : ah ok
Amakusa: when i sent the message,it had a hour left
quoth0X : i wouldn't have had the money anyway
quoth0X : see i would have still missed it though, i forgot when i checked messager
quoth0X : btw that flash drive i bought, will work with the ps2 - i can back up my saves now, a little bit too late, but still
quoth0X : they have internal hard drives for the new ps2 models now, i think they change the case out
quoth0X : and ds and psp games can be fully dumped and played now, they ported over doom 2 to psp
quoth0X : everything gets hacked eventually
Amakusa: so true
quoth0X : found a bunch of new stuff i can do with the ps2 now since i am putting the hard drive on it, as well as using the flash drive
quoth0X : load a boot menu and all kinds of shit...complicated, but at least i don't have to waste discs to do it all now, like i did the first time
quoth0X : so what do the people of pcenginefx forums have to say today with their endless wisdom?
Amakusa: they have no wisdom, you should know this by now.
quoth09 : ha so true, for the most part
Amakusa: arron Nanto probably still says Duo like"Duel"...
quoth0X : i think that goes without saying
quoth0X : you should start a thread asking about that
Amakusa: Im sure he went back and heard it while making those.
Amakusa: "Today I am going to review Beyound Shadowgate for the TurboDuel system."
quoth0X : heh
Amakusa: Right now im wondering if the guy from Frozen utopia actually owns a game system or has gone to the arcades.
quoth0X : why
Amakusa: I spat ou tthi slist of games, and he hasnt played half of them.
Amakusa: hold on
Amakusa: let me copy the list
Amakusa: Death Duel.
Pit Fighter.
Space Gun.
Narc.
Sam and Max hit the road.

Shatterhand.
The Guardian Legend.
Golvelious.

Amakusa: He didnt even know what Shock Troopers was.
Amakusa: Or Starblade fo rthat matter.....
quoth0X : christ
Amakusa: I could kinda understand the pc game smaybe
Amakusa: but Rastan,Starblade,Shocktroopers,Aero Blasters/Air Busters,
Amakusa: then game slike Defender 2k on Jaguar
Amakusa: Guardian Legend
quoth0X : some people just don't know, and therefore are oblivious to "good games"
Amakusa: this guy is supposed to be making a game for the Turbo, yet somehow has missed all these nice games
Amakusa: Hes 30
Amakusa: hes older then me
quoth0X : jeez
quoth0X : eh some people don't know, and are not as fortunate as you and i to know such knowledge
Amakusa: He should remember them, have played them, most of them if hes any kind of gamer at all, worth his weight in salt
quoth0X : unless they hear it from their friends...
quoth09 : salt eh...
Amakusa: maybe he has no friends
Amakusa: and liek I said, seems there is no knowledge at Pcengine fx tonite at least.
quoth0X : heh
Amakusa: he even accused Diehard gamefan of being on the take like crap mags liek EGM
Amakusa: and Game pro
Amakusa: actually he just basically says that gamefan sucked
Amakusa: this is coming from the guy who hates Strata games,so go figure
quoth0X : eh he does not know much then
Amakusa: Considering he hasnt played half the games on that list, from all different platforms, different times, different generes, and considering most all of those ar eclassics,he really makes me wonder.
quoth0X : all his opinions are null and void as far as i am concerned
Amakusa: well he said he didnt liek game mags, and I assumed he just ddint read them then
Amakusa: so I replied back asking how it was basically to not read the mags and have to learn of new games by going to walmart or toys r us to see what was new.
Amakusa: he replied back stating he does read them, but I beg to differ,as yet again,if he did, there is no way over the past 17 years he could have missed all those great games.
quoth0X : yeah really
Amakusa: How in the f*ck could you not notice a game like Starblade in you rlocal arcade
Amakusa: It was f*cking huge
Amakusa: Jesus
quoth0X : heh
Amakusa: and it was a Namco game
quoth0X : i never got to see one, but i know how big it is
quoth0X : but that is only because of my age
Amakusa: god it was even a near release PSX title over here
Amakusa: and was on 3DO also
Amakusa: o Sega CD even had a port
Amakusa: I mean come on....
quoth0X : maybe i didn't get to see one...i just don't remember that well.
Amakusa: but you know what teh game is
Amakusa: have known for the longest tiem now
Amakusa: time
Amakusa: now
Amakusa: lol
quoth0X : yeah i know what it is, definitely
Amakusa: my spelling is crap tonite
quoth0X : heh
Amakusa: well here im going to give you a link to hi ssite real quick
Amakusa: take a look at the pics of the game he is making
quoth09 : k
Amakusa: http://frozenutopia.nodtveidt.net/
Amakusa: take a look
Amakusa: what do you think?
Amakusa: Shareware looking or not?
Amakusa: kinda like sack of flower heart of gold?
quoth0X : what the one screenshot he has up
Amakusa: but not as funny
Amakusa: go to projects
Amakusa: more pics
quoth0X : who is the guy you are talking to on there
quoth0X : what is his name, is he the primary programmer for this
Amakusa: yea
Amakusa: hes the main programmer
quoth0X : no wonder
quoth0X : he is from puerto rico
quoth0X : f*cking 3 world section of u.s.
Amakusa: lol
Amakusa: hey, thats not entirely true,I do believe they have awal mart there
quoth0X : he is a programmer, been programming all his life, missed out on the titles he should know about
quoth0X : bah, they have wal-marts in mexico, no difference
quoth0X : and canada for that matter
quoth0X : it looks ok
Amakusa: quality wise?
quoth0X : yeah, but it does look like it has that feel
Amakusa: are you hyped from the pics?
quoth0X : not really now
quoth0X : no*
Amakusa: well, the guy wondered why I keep refering to it as shareware looking
quoth0X : i think i am more hyped about printing out my shipping labels right now
quoth0X : does he even know what shareware is?
Amakusa: well no wthat you mettion where he is from, and considering he "says" hes a programmer,I do wonder if he does...
quoth0X : yeah really
quoth0X : it's sad when someone a decade younger than his ass probably knows more about games
Amakusa: Time seemed to pass him by
Amakusa: on that little island of the damned
quoth0X: lol
Amakusa: id have been in hell with no good game saround to play
quoth0X : similar to not having a cd drive for your turbo eh
Amakusa: and the funny thing is,him and one of his buddys are the guys talking about timekillers graphics, yet their game looks liek cheap shareware.
quoth0X : bah, his game looks like garbage compared to time killers
Amakusa: About any game I have seen on the Pc Engine looks better, even older games liek DeathBringer.
quoth0X : lol
quoth0X : his game looks like nes
Amakusa: well, you never know, maybe they will finish it,and it will rock, but considering it is coming from a guy who has missed so many great games during the past 17+ years, and has no clue about any of them,I wont hold my breath as to wether he knows how a good game should be.
Amakusa: Paranoia Dragon
quoth0X : makes me wonder if he has played through the other 2 utopias
Amakusa: This guy is pretty nice, and its sad hes a member of their group
quoth0X : er neutopias
Amakusa: He should start hsi own
Amakusa: sence he has doen soem work before it seems
Amakusa: god my spelling
Amakusa: ]Im sleepy
quoth0X : bah, don't worry about it
quoth0X : you should go to sleep
quoth0X : i have to sometime here in the next few hours - post office day tomorrow
Amakusa: Im afraid I might have a bad dream about being on a island where no good games are
quoth0X : lmao
Amakusa: Do you think fun might be outlawed on his island?
Amakusa: and that is why he hasnt played many games?
Amakusa: good games for that matter?
quoth0X : haha
quoth0X : that's australia
Amakusa: lmfao
Amakusa: dead beat bidder capitol of the world
quoth0X : the land where gta3 was banned
Amakusa: where your garden hose can sink in the sand
Amakusa: The land of Mad Max
quoth0X : and where they think that kangaroos are grand
Amakusa: The fatherland of Mel Gibson, the plunder of christ
Amakusa: the passion of the dollar
quoth0X : lmfao
quoth0X : notice you don't see anything about the redux now
Amakusa: no,but if you act now,you might still be able to order one of those ink pins with the passion logo on it
Amakusa: or at-shirt
Amakusa: maybe he will do a flik about the jim jones cult next
quoth0X : lol
quoth0X : maybe

My faulght on the Magic sword having a s at the end,a typo, with few hours sleep and kids running about,it happens.
-
Bringing you up in the conversation Arron,I just want to say,I really did like the shows you did,I converted them all to Svcd,I just wish they were done at a higher res so that the pic quality would have been better.I keep them on Maxell Pros in my collection of games. But I do have to ask,why is it when you say duo,it sounds like your saying duel?
-
Wow Michael, five of your own posts in a row...you're quite a character, you know that? I'm not even going to respond to your massive insults and laughable fake conversation on yahoo, of all things. But I will give you a little history lesson and some geographical information as well.
The fact of the matter is that I did not spend my entire life playing video games. I had a social life in my younger years and was very physically active. Problems with my spine have all but halted me being physically active all the time but I still have a social life and I still like to get out of the house and work as well as meet people; friends, family, etc. My life does not revolve around video games; never has, never will. Even now, I don't even play online games; the only online game I ever play is RuneScape, despite what many people around me, including some of my friends, think of it (they think it sucks because it's not the cutting edge of 3D technology).
I've owned a C64, an Atari 2600, an NES (both models), an SNES, a Genesis, a Sega CD, a TurboGrafx 16, a TurboDuo, an Atari Jaguar, a Playstaion, a Playstation 2, a AgemGear, a GameBoy, an Atari Lynx, and many many computers. The games you mentioned that I have not played or have not heard of are games outside of my chosen genres. And again, since my life did not revolve around video games, I did not waste away my afternoons in arcades...I went from time to time whenever I felt like checking out what was new and maybe dropping a couple of bucks here and there.
And I am not originally from Puerto Rico. I was born in Tennessee in 1975, moved to Vermont in 1977, and then moved to Pennsylvania in 2002. I moved down here to Puerto Rico in 2003 not too long after my fiancee passed away. No hablo mucho espaƱol, pero estoy aprendiendo.
Puerto Rico has 13 WalMarts, with 4 of them being super centers. WalMart does not establish themselves in third-world countries so I guess there goes that little theory. Can you two even identify Puerto Rico on a map? Probably not. But I guess your prejudice limits your knowledge of this island, so I'll forgive you this time. Hey, we even have...high-speed internet! And cell phones! And cars! And metro areas! Banks with metal detectors! There are no towns in Puerto Rico...every area is a city, and there are 78 of them. We have 9 Sams Clubs here, and 28 KB Toys (I know this because my wife and I recently inventoried all 28 of them for the stock our company distributes). Third world section of the US?
Well, since you've decided to turn a simple dislike over a single game into a giant flame-fest, I certainly hope you're proud of yourself. You've got the maturity of a 14-year-old...are you sure you're 28? But I guess you can pin this on the fact that you have kids running around, right? I wonder if you beat your kids too. And I'm still waiting for the other "true and real" gamer to have their word. You said there were a couple...well wait, there were two people there so I guess then that one of the "true and real" gamers is you. A little arrogant, are we? I can certainly understand your lack of seratonin due to lack of sleep which brings about emotional instability therefore making you write such things, so...well, it still doesn't make it right to do regardless of your excuse.
And while we're at it here...how about YOU try programming a game that is going to "r0xx0r 0ur s0xx0rz", eh? Put up or shut up, I always say.

I think that the personal attacks over a game are too much. Neither Nodtveidt or myself made any prior attacks on your person. In fact, I have defended your right and everybodies right to love which ever game you choose to like. But, as I said before, if your gonna step up and say "Hey that Superman game for the N64 was great." then expect to hear a thousand "OH that game was SCHITE" comments (not saying by the way that you did say that you liked that game).
Now as for Mysterious Song and the other games coming from Frozen Utopia...so you don't like it. So it looks dated...this isn't PS2 or Xbox. It is a remake of a traditional Role Playing Game and I believe he was trying to keep some of the originals charms and looks and not re-invent the wheel. You don't have to play it. I also would like to ask how many games have come out for the Turbo in the last 8 years......lets see Implode and A Metero Blast...fine games and damn glad that their is someone out there making an attempt to put stuff out for MY Favorite system of all time. But, one is a Yahoo game clone and the other is an Asteroids clone. So lets not split hairs about game appearance=not good.
As for the rest of your post, its childish at best and down right rude at worst. I will make no appologies about one single comment I made. If you have no since of humor or the ability to leave others to their opinions that is a problem you have to deal with not me. But, until then I would like to say.....Keep your eyes on Frozen Utopia and their products, because I am pretty damn sure, that thanks to your comments, there will be no vaporware over there....Even if I have to be the last man standing over there....which I won't
-
I thought you might like to read this, sence it might give you a idea of a couple of "true and real" gamers opinions might be like regarding your up and coming game.
here you go straight from the Yahoo archive.
I, for one, am excited about this game.
-
It's a shame to see such negativity and childishness on these boards. This is usually the one place I can go to that avoids that sort of thing.
Personally, while the Frozen Utopia stuff looks great in my opinion, they could release a Pong remake on the Turbo and I'd still pay top dollar for it just to encourage people to keep making stuff for my favorite system.
If we're going to be petty here, it's spelled "since" not "sence".
Just kidding. Anyway, my point is, let's just keep this civil, shall we? If you want to argue, please go to GameFaqs or IGN.
-
So......how bout them Dodgers? Anyways, let's just let this all end. It's not getting anyone anywhere. We're all imperfect people, with different opinions, & that's just the way it is, end of story.
-
You can look for Quoth on ebay or on yahoo,I didnt fake the conversation, why would I bother? And as I recall both of you asking what kind of freaks live where I am located, remarking about the binky, and other remarks I wont bother to list,as anyone can go back and read them. And you said this stuff first, why?Because I defended a game mag and some games I feel were really great. You opened the door as far as I am concerned.Quoth and I use to manage game stores,We are both heavy gamers and collectors, him more then me infact. We are both into older game systems.he is the friend who dished out the 200 plus bucks for Alien Soldier. After doing that there shouldnt be any question about his passion for gaming. If you would like, you can check his ebay auctions,as he sells alot of hard to find stuff, for all systems. The ebay id to look for is quoth09.
As far as games go,I have a Gamecube, and a PS2 here in the house, but never play them.I only play 16-bit stuff anymore, and pc games here and
there. If I only cared for the Xbox and PS2 crap that is churned out monthly,I would'nt be here right now.
I look at it this way,the game either brings something to the table I like,or it doesnt, and that is the end of it.If I liked the game,I will defend it.And it is a basic fact that most of those games on the list were major titles over the time period of 88-96.I cant fathom the idea that a hard core gamer,or a guy programing for a classic system could have missed half of those games, yet make a attempt at making a classic feeling game on a system such as the Turbo Cd/Pc-Engine.And I got a glimps of Puerto Rico a couple weeks back,as Wal Mart held its share holders convention her ein Fayetteville, and many people from your "island" came to it,as they do each year, and with happy joy joy smiles comment about how much more we have here in the small city of Fayetteville then they do on the "island",and we watch with happy smiles as they spend and spend and spend away their hard earned cash on things like blow dryers and Apex dvd players, and in the most broken english as possible ask if everything comes with a 110/220 volt adapter.
Thats where the 3rd world comment comes from, and it gets reinforced every year in late May to early June.and as a former Wal Mart employee,i can assure you that Wal-Mart has every interest at heart in exploiting the richest AND poorest of areas all around the world.
-
You know what keeps getting reinforced how much of a Bigot and a Hypocrite you truely are.
I am going to say that this is my last comment on the topic. I defended everyones comments even your initial comment. But they have clearly depraved down to name calling and immaturity. You seem to think you know so much, but think so little. I appreciate your right to your opinion but defamation of character and racially driven comments are not defendable actions and I think that the people of the community should show it the proper respects....
Anyway, I figured out what The worst games I like is. I like the TV Sports line up and Night Creature....but atleast I don't like Ballistic  :D
-
Dishing out $200 for Alien Soldier when you can get the PAL version IN ENGLISH for 1/3 of that makes you semi-retarded, not hardcore. And I love how Starblade is some kind of measuring stick, I bet a big portion of the professional game programmers out there don't know or give a rat's ass about half the games on that list.
Props to Frozen Utopia, anybody who can make or port a new RPG to the Duo has an awesome mullet and can probably play at least a 15 minute guitar solo.

WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON HERE?
I finally catch up reading the old posts and discover that this thread has gone wacky.
Michael: I love tons of games that most serious gamers consider "crap". It is frustrating when folks dismiss games without really trying to appreciate them first. But that doesn't justify the barbed insults you threw at fellow posters. As I see it, everyone involved was getting somewhat abrasive with one another, but you crossed the line several times (particularly your racial / ethnic insults).
I know it sounds corny, but now it's time for some peace, love and harmony. Let's not make things any worse.
Michael, for what it's worth, I actually enjoyed reading your earlier posts when you explained some of the history behind Strata and what you liked about some of their games. That was neat stuff I didn't know and you were encouraging discussions that wouldn't have otherwise occurred here. I also enjoy it when someone takes an unpopular position and explains why they maintain it. All of that was very kool.
But, while everyone volleyed insults back and forth, you didn't have to go COMPLETELY BALLISTIX (http://home.comcast.net/~archive-three/TP-11-23.jpg) on them!
TIP: Only a handful of light-hearted barbs are necessary when you want to insult someone here!
ASIDE: This thread has inspired my most recent song, which is entitled "Games Will Tear Us Apart". I'm only half-joking!
-
Messiah Mike, you are a true work of art, you know that? Oh wait, didn't I mention this before? :D Everything you say further discredits you...if I were you, I'd back out now to save at least a minor amount of face. And here's why:
So you got a "glimps" at Puerto Rico... (blame the kids for your typos). You don't have the first clue when it comes to Puerto Rico. Your little example is terribly flawed; I believe you have the wrong country. First of all, PR operates on 110, not 220, so why the hell would they need convertors? Also, English, although not the mother tongue, is spoken quite often down here, and its difficult to believe that anyone involved with Wal-Mart would be speaking in broken English, especially shareholders, who are almost always of US origin, even if in PR. Additionally, the items that you mentioned are expensive in PR; much better to buy these items and others as well in the US to avoid the tax hikes that they carry when brought here. There are products here than you can't get in the US (let's see you buy plantillas or queso blancos in your little Arkansas Wal-Mart) and vice versa. You can buy Birch Beer in Pennsylvania Wal-Marts but outside of the state, most people have never even heard of it. Wal-Mart localizes their stock; my wife and I work as merchandisers and one of the stores we service is Wal-Mart and in addition, her mother worked as a high-level manager for Wal-Mart for five years and was involved in the opening of a new one. What was your position...cart pusher? Oh excuse me...they call them "Courtesy Associates" now. Try naming a single poor third-world country that has a Wal-Mart in it. Wal-Mart does not open stores in areas which are proven to be unprofitable, kinda like McDonalds. Wal-Mart doesn't do too hot in Germany because they don't like the chain very much, but there's no use in trying to use this as an example because Germany is very much a first-world country. :D
And where did you get the idea that I said I was some kind of hardcore gamer? I never said that. I said that I, and everyone else in Frozen Utopia, is dedicated. I love this console, there's no questioning that fact. :D RPGs were my bread and butter throughout time and I disliked most other genres simply because they weren't my thing. So the fact that I didn't know about many of these "uber-l33t games" isn't exactly shocking, nor does it have any effect or bearing on our ability to produce a classic game. After all, this IS a game from my own genre of choice, and considering I've programmed many a game on the PC before (most of which are RPGs), well...I think anyone can figure out where I'm going with this one. :D
Now for a more personal note...do you pay attention to the style of writing that people use? Did you not notice the use of emoticons? I use them very often to convey emotional intention. When I mentioned "Makes me wonder what kind of deranged people live in your town... " it was followed by five laughing smiles. This means "I'm yanking your chain in good fun". Learn to recognize emoticons and their usage. Now, let's see if you can recognize the difference between these two phrases:
Please remove the corn cob from your ass. :D :D :D
Please remove the corn cob from your ass.
Can you tell the difference? :D
Now, getting back ON TOPIC, finally...how much does the Golden Axe game go for? I want to snag a copy to see this miserable failure first-hand. :D
-
Its not very expensive....between 15-40 bucks...not to bad...thats off the top of my head...been awhile since I hit ebay.
-
Hi :D
We can take a break on this discussion by all doing the same thing.
Hi :D
-
I usually see it for around 20 bucks or less.
-
I picked one up for about $7 within the last month or two. I personally haven't seen GA go for more than $10 except for when it was first released.
-
I'll thank you people to kindly stop shitting all over my thread now.

Im sorry,it got boring and seemed to just go on and on here so I didnt check up yesterday. To the comment about the dual voltage question, yes they asked this alot, almost everyone did, because in some parts of the world that the shareholders travel,110 volts is not the standard, they are shareholders, which means they travel everywhere Wal-Mart calls them to go to,from Germany to the moon if need be.Not only that but not every share holder, even from Puerto Rico, speak perfect english,or any english at all.The only reason english is spoken there to begin with is because the US doesnt know when to leave a place alone, and so we like to spread/force our influence down other cultures throats and change them to suit our needs."For what its worth,Id like to move to Asia, but that would depend on the wife, not just me."And alot of them had to travel all over South America to get here, some also coming from Brazil and what not,and not every place in South America is 110 from what I have been told either. My typos, yes I screw up alot,I dont even type,as I never bothered to learn,I only got into computers for the gaming experience they give. That was why I forced myself to learn to build nice gaming computers.I suck at typing,Im the first to admit that.I have kids also, and when kids are playing around you,you do get distracted.Any of you who DO have kids on this forum know this to be very true. Its cuts your gaming hours down quite a bit,or any personal time you might try to have for yourself. My job,is in retail.I have never worked as a cart pusher in my life,I dont even have to work.My wife is a LPN,that mean shes a nurse to any of you who dont know medical terms. She works on a peds floor in registry,on normal hourly pay,she makes $27.00 an hour, and gets paid $38.00 for call time hourly.I work to get out of the house so I dont go insane,it gives me a break from the kids.I have been in retail management, retail sales, been a CNA,a security guard for Union Pacific RailRoad, and a stocker for both Wal Mart and Target.I have even did a stint running photo for WalGreens.I do the jobs I like to do,that dont become a pain in the ass,and I usually only work half the year,as I take most of spring to summer off to spend with my kids.If ever in my life i was a cart pusher at Wal mart,I couldnt afford games Id like to mettion also,as they pay the cart pushers crap, and walk all over them. Also,by you commenting on the cart pushers who work there, your knocking on them for just trying to make a buck. Not everyone can do every job well, and Im sure any cart pusher would agree it sucks, but its a living for what its worth. Some people have to make bills anyway they can,and I have a couple of friends who do the cart pushing thing for the Wal Mart down the street. If you want to know a shame here, its the fact that in alot of retail game stores, they barely make over the min. wage, the cart pushers make more.Go figure.I also dont care for people bringing up their medical problems and deaths in the family for sympathy and to rally others on your side. You seemed to have gotten far into the world for what its worth, moving around a bit,and I dont think being or not being psyically active has anything to do with gaming at home or ina local arcade much,as I said,m wife works on Peds, she takes care of lots of sick kids, dying kids, who are heavy gamers, putting lots of hours in on the Gamecube and X Box on the peds floor, who dont let anything stop them.So unless you just cant stand up at a arcade at all,and cant plunk your ass on a couch or chair to begin with, you can play games.
2:I may stoop low,and in anger not hold any punches, but I know when to admit I was being a ass,and I was.I have a tendancy to do this when others do it too.You attack me,I attack back, and thats life.I dont care for sarcasm myself, but thats just me.And even sarcasm has its limits, and then ceases to be just"sarcasm",like the binky,Arkansas knocks. Its a tired subject,I dont have the time for it anymore either,as I only got on here to discuss games,as they dont discuss them on the comp forums I go to.Enough of all of it is right, lets let it end.
3: The games on that list at one point in time were in a class by themselves, meaning not much else at the time they were released did what they did.Starblade was one of the first major 3d arcade games.Way of the Warrior was one of the first games to use a real band for its music soundtrack, not just that but the game did things no other did on the 3DO.The Guardian Legend if no tthe first was one of the first few to do a cross between shooter and adventure, and did it well.Pit Fighter was the first fighter with digitized actors.True, some of the games dont stand the test of time, because others were released that knocked them off their throne, but at the time they were out, they were it.Nothing could compete.
3:I understand why Quoth purchased the Alien Soldier cart,he did NOT want a english pal cart.He wanted a Jap cart.He liked the look of it more, box and all.I completely understand this,I have avoided as many pal games as possible, because they usually look like US counterparts.
Not just this, but there can be problems with some Pal games on US decks, like Mario Cart on Snes, the Pal cart ran too fast on NTSC systems, and was known to short out a deck while being played.I had no luck getting a Pal N64 cart to run ona US system. The few Pal Mega Drive carts I have messed with ran slower, when being forced to do 60 hz.My monitor will display Pal,without the screen rolling, but its in black and white,so why bother.Master System I never had aproblem with, and the UK games released were way more plentiful then in the US.Dreamcast games had the same problems when messing with Pal disc.Your best bet seemed to be the VGA box, unless it was a converted game disc booted with Utopia or something.
There is some site that compared the difference on the 2,Pal and Jap carts of Alien Soldier, and if I get the link I will post it here, the only difference I noticed right away was the title screen.
Also,a side note on Golden Axe.Quoth has a bootleg cart of Golden Axe 3 for Megadrive, that only runs in Pal.
Im taking a break from this place for a day or 2 more. Its draining.Frozen Utopia will either do the job well or fail terribly,I cant wait to see either way.
Later.

If anyone's interested in selling their copy of Golden Axe CD (PCE version obviously), I'll gladly take it off your hands for $20 plus shipping. :D

Hey. We don't really know that they are counterfeit yet. :) I'm going to search the Earth and discover the origin of these slightly different copies of the game. :)

On the Golden Axe subject...we picked up a copy of Golden Axe for the GBA today (a Sega Smashpack containing Ecco, Sonic Spinball, and Golden Axe) and all I have to say is...if the PCE version plays as badly as the GBA version, then it's no wonder why people say it sucks. Wow, the GBA version is the essence of ass. You can't see what's going on most of the time because the colours are way too dark, the game scrolls way too fast, the enemy AI is jacked way up higher than the original PLUS they move too fast, and it's based on the Genesis version rather than the arcade original. A total slobjob.
After playing through it (and yes, beating it, it's not hard when you're used to the Genesis version anyways), I had to play through the arcade original to be reminded of what a truly great game Golden Axe was before it was fux0red by Sega's lesser programmers...
-
Yeah, it sucks for the Dreamcast version of Smash Pack too. Unfortunate, as playing Golden Axe on my DC was the only reason I bought it. The sound...godawful...
-
I recently played alien storm becausse of the fond memories, very similar to Golden Axe and only different in style ( except for that it has a bonus shooting thing between levels).
Good to play for half an hour but not one for the history books.
-
I'll be the first to say that EGM was among the worst for this kind of favouritism (they knocked a lot of Neo Geo games left and right) but they all sucked when it all comes down to it. And I'm 30, btw. :P
Wouldn't say every game on the.. NeoGeo sucked.
Sure it had it's share of turds like with any system.
Still it had it's share of gems also.
MetalSlug
Kof serise
Samurai Shodown 2 heh my all time favorite
Strikers 1945 Plus
Magicial Drop III
Nam 1975
Magician Lord
View Point
Last Blade
Garou MOTW
To name a few.
As for EGM they been going down hill ever since, Ed sold the mag all those years ago.

Sega been lazy period when it comes to.. emulation.
Given how the, Sega Smash Pack turn out for the DC :P

Neo Geo rules.

please, dont even mention its name; it hurts me too much. [I sold my minty fresh copy in the mid '90s along with BioHazard Battle] I still regret it so much. Those were the last games I ever sold, I just can't do it.

Wouldn't say every game on the.. NeoGeo sucked.
I didn't say every game on the NeoGeo sucked, I said every magazine sucked. The NeoGeo was awesome. :D

Ok no problem then the way you said it i wasn't sure
I do agree just about every... game mag today does sucked.
It would be nice if there was a, magazine by gamers for gamers.
-
There are some magazines out there that our strictly for classic games, but I forgot the names of them. One starts with an M... "Mancy Games" maybe?
-
some of you may not know, there is a new mag called Hardcore Gamer, its put together by some of the guys from the original GameFan staff. [No ECM, i think he had a break down after the whole GameGO! magazine fiasco] It's starting out pretty good, the third issue is due in August.
i also subscribe to Play, really nice writing and layout. caters to the hardcore, while staying in the mainstream.

Didn't he used to work for Gamefan? Yeah that was quite the hype machine. Especially for the companies they were in bed with; lets see- atari, crystal dynamics, treasure, did I miss any?

yeah crystal dynamics, remember that blood omen issue? it was probably about 12 pages of balls to the walls coverage. i did buy it on release though.
-
I missed that one. Loved the game though. Wish they would do another 2D Kain game. They are sitting on a DS/GBA goldmine if nothing else.

Yeah did start out at GameFan then he left.
Then he started.. GamersRepublic then he trash it and started Play.
I swear what a douchbag i thought, GamersRepublic was good enough

Here's a great article on how awesome Dave Halverson is. (http://www.segabastard.com/features/playnight.html)
Some of those qoutes are awesome, I wish there was a site dedicated to all of that guy's super ridiculous BS. One of those Gamefan guys, I think his name was Shidoshi, used to post on usenet all the time and once in a while he'd let fly some dirt on what a shithead Halverson was. I just remember shidoshi always mentioning how Halverson would slap his name on other people's reviews and edit other people's reviews so they matched his opinion, it was pretty hilarious.
