Title: Question regarding Magical Chase
Post by: Raizen1984 on September 03, 2009, 05:51:35 PM
The Price Guide on these forums say it can be obtained for $175.  However, I heard that a copy went for $2000 on eBay recently, though I believe that was for a sealed copy.

So I was wondering how much a non-sealed, but still complete copy of this game goes for?  Is the Japanese version cheaper?

Hi. I bought a copy of the game with manual last year for $165 for the US version. Excuse my french, but anyone who paid $2000 for the game, sealed or not, is out of their f*cking mind.

Generally speaking, the JP version goes for less than the US version. But you just have to keep your eyes open. There are certain individuals who have gone to great lengths to ensure that the prices of the late-release Turbo games continue to skyrocket.

All this is precisely the reason why I think "price guides" are not a very good idea, and why I will not personally endorse the one on this site (not that my personal endorsement means a lot, but still).

Yes, a complete Japanese MC will be cheaper than a North American complete MC.

There were two pressings of the Japanese MC... I don't think there is any significant difference between them (slight variation with manual, perhaps).

North American version, though, was altered: stages re-arranged, sprites changed, etc.

I think the best coverage can be found here:  TG-16 vs. PCE Magical Chase (http://www.superpcenginegrafx.com/dare_to_compare_mc.html)

Pretty crazy :)

As for finding a complete North American Magical Chase... good luck. A loose cart, perhaps. Maybe.

If your a gamer go with the Japanese version its MUCH cheaper.  If your a collector and insist on a US version you can find them but they aren't cheap.  Best thing you can do it take your time finding one.  You may just fall into a lucky deal and get it at a descent price..

I will say this, you have to seek it out.  If you wait for one on ebay your going to pay alot.  Find one off ebay in a private sale is your best bet.  It takes some searching though.

Looks like it's gone up in value even more.  Check this out:

I think I'll need to give up on getting a complete turbo collection.  I mean, jesus...

IIRC that was the person that won Aaron's sealed MC..had it "graded" and relisted it right after.  Trust me just cause some dipdhit lists it at $8,000 doesn't mean it's "worth" that.  It's already at least the first relisting of that same auction, and unless they find someone flush with LOTS of $ (and stupid as hell) it will sit for quiet awhile.

Yep, he got that for $3K I think, had it graded, and relisted it with a BIN of $9000. I guess he's now got it relisted for 'only' $8K.

It cracks me up that he STILL keeps referring to it as 9.0 instead of 90.

And it also cracks me up that he puts this sentence in the description every time: "I’m just going to offer it once and keep it. So in other words, if it doesn’t sell, I’m not going to offer it again. "

That is hilarious. I remember that from the first auction. We should screen capture the old auction page and this one to document this epic "one time only" deal.

I'm not on my computer now, maybe I'll do it later.

Magical Chase sucks.  Plain and simple.  I have 90 games, will pick up the other 3 soon (Bonk 3 is a bit pricey, but within the realm of reasonable), but I will never get this game.  I will just have to have a big black sad hole in my collection where this stupidly rare piece of garbage should be.  Who wants to join the "Magical Chase sucks balls" club?

Saying its overpriced on eBay is absolutely true.  Saying it just flat out sucks or it's horrible just isn't accurate.  You don't have to have a black hole in your collection, you just have to have patience and actually look HARD for one. I paid $225 for my Magical Chase about 5-6 months ago.

I made this John Cocktoasten the magnanimous offer of $250 with a note regarding his dirty pirate hooker auctions.  Here's hoping for some self-righteous indignation and good giggles.

There's no doubt that you're qualified to give advice on how to help drive its price ever higher.

Do we really need to re-hash this?

No laughter to be had; my offer was dismissed without comment.  :|

Were the VGA grade report scans included earlier?  In my offer, I mentioned that there's no such thing as a 9.0 VGA grade, so he may have added 'em to 'prove' that I'm wrong.  Either that or I just missed 'em last time.

Do we really need to re-hash this?

Sometimes the truth hurts, eh?  :P

I honestly wish they had just never released MC in the US. All it did was give gloating rights to Crazy Dion wannabes and drive up the price of the JP version by association

Just did a web search and couldn't find my answer.  Anyone know how many copies of Magical Chase US were released?

No fewer than any of the other late Turbo releases, which adds to the ridiculousness of people charging thousands of dollars for it. It actually had a larger print run than many less expensive games.

Most of the 1993 and later releases had print runs of 1,500-5,000 units. 3,000 is the number I've been quoted as MC's print run from a friend who used to work at Hudson.

To put it in perspective for you: Order of the Griffon also had a print run of 3,000. Yes, the same name of copies exist of both Order and Chase. Think about it.

If that is the case...  I'll give you a steal of a deal.  Only $200 for my loose Order of the Griffon.

And OotG is more rare overall as a game since it's exclusive to the Turbo while Magical Chase was released twice in Japan.

That's so perfectly true. The japanese version is by no means a rare item. You can easily find 4 or 5 copies in every retro game shop in Japan. It really sucks to have to pay so much even for the japanese version.
