Title: Question about the Super Game Boy!
Post by: MotoRoaderMike on September 04, 2009, 09:37:36 AM
I got the Game Boy version of Space Invaders today, and when I played it on the Super Game Boy, it gave me two options:Super Game Boy or Arcade Mode, and when you pick Arcade Mode, you go into this full-screen version of the game, and the sounds and graphics in the intro are all 16 bit, not 8 bit like the Game Boy! Here's a video I found on YouTube that explains what I'm saying better:

I want to know, what other (Super) Game Boy games have features similar to this! Anybody know any?

Few titles have much extra in 'em beyond specific palettes and borders; I believe that Space Invaders was the sole title to include a completely different game mode, though a few titles (Kirby's Dream Land 2, Donkey Kong, and likely others) used the SNES to generate better sound.

Well, goddamn, I never knew about that. Of course, now I have to get me Space Invaders... is the Gameboy/SGB version decent?

That is cool, I never knew about this!

Too bad we don't see similar things on other consoles.  Say an SMS game with some Genesis programming in it when played on a PBC.  Maybe an extra layer of scrolling.  Not sure if that is even possible, though.  I guess the Super GameBoy makes it possible because it was designed to have borders, etc, so it was designed to use the SNES hardware.

Very cool!

That is the shittiest quality Youtube video I've seen in ages though. Truly legendary.

Space Invaders is cool, but there's already a regular cartridge of it for the Super Famicom anyway.  It's too bad more games didn't get this deluxe treatment on the SGB.

This thread inspired me to play Space Invaders PCE HuCard.

Tangent: I think I am more forgiving in my assessment of it these days. A few years ago I was really disappointed by the updated mode (I thought it could have controlled better, looked better), but yesterday and today—well, I was enjoying it and not complaining about it.

Since we are on the topic:
I was wondering, how does the PCE Space Invaders CD version compare to the HuCard?

Back on topic: I have this odd feeling that Gameboy version of SI will be pretty good.

I think the Game Boy version is the best version available if you ask me. :) It's the Game Boy game I've been playing the most all month. :)

Well, I guess I'll be picking it up. I pulled out PCE Space Invaders when you started this thread and have been digging it.

I like the updated version on the PCE HuCard. :)
