Or do they? It struck me as strange that you only seem to get score/time attacks on vertical shooters, but perhaps I'm forgetting some.

It's basically because in most horis, the levels can damage you if you fly into the scenery, whereas in verts, you usually fly over the scenery (and hence can destroy it from above.) If there were a hori with a score attack, it'd look like the cell/candy-shooting bonus stages of Gradius & Parodius.

But still... why deny shoot-em-up fans a score attack (or time attack) mode? :)
It's funny how certain things become established customs...
