A hot topic of shoutbox debate: now, we let the voters decide!
-
Its one of my top NES games.
Battle of Olympus
Faxanadu
Legacy of the Wizard
Dragon Warrior III
Crystalis
Jackal
Ninja Gaiden
Final Fantasy
Contra
Destiny of an Emperor
Those are my like top 10 NES games.
Alot of people hate on Faxanadu and I never understood why. It's got really nice music, the graphics are very atmospheric for an NES game, and the story/gameplay are right on.
It sure is better than Zelda II
-
I haven't played that game in years but I do recall enjoying it when I played it. I have seen it at my local used video game store and will be picking it in the near future.
-
I've heard of it, but I've never had the chance to play it. I didn't realize that it's part of the Xanadu series.

FAmicom XANADU
:-D

I voted "A good game". I love it even though I'm aware of it's flaws (all classics have them). There are so many great NES games that I wouldn't say it's definitely in the top ten, although it usually makes my personal "10 of favorites" lists.

Faxanadu would've been better suited as the title of Legacy of the Wizard/ DS IV(?).
FAmily (as in FAMIly COMputer) XANADU.
-
It's a good game, but not good enough to be in the top ten; as B_T noted, Faxanadu has some pretty stiff competition.
-
Bottom 10 IMO...clunky as all get out, 8 shades of shit coloring, one of if not THE worst Falcom game since they started on home consoles.

Its no less clunky than Castlevania, and has more shading than it to boot.
Did you ever see some of the later parts of the game, or pass it off as trash after the first 10-20 minutes.
I think bottom 10 is a stretch and a half. What other games sit down there with it?
Deadly Towers and Captain Comic better be down there.

The only problem with that is the game wasn't originally on the FC, its an MSX title.
and, MSXANADU is just a bad idea. :)

Why yes I played the hell out of this bitd (sadly due to lack of other games at the time). Saying that it's better than Zelda II is WAY more of a stretch and a half..as Zelda II is actually PLAYABLE.
-
I beat it twice. Bottom 10.
Only because it posed an impossible challenge. Once in 2001 and about 3 years ago when I had the flu.
The clunky bastard would fall off of every ledge thousands of times, causing me immeasurable pain.
Hes like a rock with armor. Gravity is like 3x that of regular gravity.
This game sucks. :-&
Go play Xanadu for the PCE.

As B_T said, there are so many friggin' great NES/Famicom games, it is hard to put Faxanadu in the TOP 10, but it certainly is one of my faves:
1. Love the atmosphere (it is depressing, lonely, somber)
2. I like the drab aesthetics, since they fit the game (hey, a reason to appreciate browns and ochers!)
3. The music is nice, to boot.
4. REMEMBER YOUR MANTRA*
5. I totally dug the story, the world tree, and how things developed as you progressed in the game
6. The Catholic Church vibe (crusader/paladin, nun, cathedral) adds a bonus point!
* I learned the word "mantra" from this game.
-
6. The Catholic Church vibe
I totally got that vibe from the guy who gives you your passwordmantra. I thought he was gonna molest me!
ok, not really, but he was f*ckin' creepy.

I'm with you on that. But, you know what is hilarious... I think it was a WOMAN who gave you the mantra.
ASIDE: Oh dearest Lord, I know not the sex of the mantra-issuer in Faxandu.

I think they are both perfectly playable. Dont get me wrong, I love Zelda II. Id pick it over the first one and the n64 one. I just prefer the setting of Faxanadu more. Its got this empty, barren, sorrowful theme that completely kicks ass. Then you save the world and everything becomes lush and exciting again.
I can't say I have experienced this clunky problem either.
I forgot two other top 10 games, so now its a top 12. Kid Icarus and Magic of Scheherazade. :-D
-
I think Faxandu is to Nintendo as Tatsu no ko Fighter is to the PCE. :-k
-
You should play more NES games then.
I mean have you ever played Amagon, Captain Comic, Deadly Towers, or any of the Wisdom Tree games? :-"
and as far as clunky irritating platforming goes, the Wizards and Warriors series is the ultimate crown holder. Theyre fun games, but theyre a pain in the ass.
and then you got like, the Predator, Rambo, Flying Dragon, Beetle Juice, the Addams Family, ......etc.

I have played many NES games. I have more than I would care to admit.

I've beaten Amagon. It's stupid hard. I don't like the game at all. The dynamic is similar (morph into big dude, punch, etc.), but not the same as tatsu no ko fighter. Amagon is more fun than Tatsu no ko fighter.

I think Faxanadu is much worse than Wizards and Warrors and Iron Sword. you at least can control your jumps in Wizards and Warriors. I had 100x more fun with W&W.

:-s

Rambo is another NES game I enjoyed once I figured it out. It's not a work of art, but I love adventurey Faxanambo style games. The challenge of broken games can be appealing on its own as well, which is why I also appreciate Night Creatures for what it is, without thinking that it's pure gold.

That batch of games right there is some of the worst crap on the NES entirely.
I like W&W a ton. I play Ironsword all the time, but damn. They have some of the rudest platform sequences I've ever seen in ANY game. I always thought the little guy was really slippery when you go bouncing around.
My biggest complaint about Rambo aside from it being a Zelda II ripoff is that its RAMBO. I don't want to play an RPG-like game based off a movie where the majority of the dialog is "URHAURRRRRRRRRRRRRRAHHHHH" followed by explosions.
Faxanambo. Hmm..... :-D

 Yeah. Now I understand the list.

It Is slippery. The armor makes him move like a bowling ball.

hahahhaahha. That would be the original Final Fantasy 2.
