Just picked up this gem, can't wait to play it! Heard its an amazing platformer.
It got me thinkin' tho, anyone got any opinions on must-own platformers for PCE?
I've pretty much researched most all of em, but definitely want the expert opinions of everyone on here. Screenshots and one-paragraph reviews can only do so much.
Oh, and I never spoil potential buys watching youtube footage.
-
Oh yea, this applies to all platformers, not just the "cutesy ones"
-
this is surprisingly a good game and I only managed to get one after reading stuff about it from Sunteam's site
some tricky moments where you be asked questions ...

You can't go wrong with Bonk's Adventure, Bonk's Revenge, Bonk's Big Adventure, New Adventure Island, or Son Son II.
-
very good but lil' bit easy: shubibinman 3
-
You mustn't forget the greatest platformer of all time: Baby Jo. :^o
-
I'm not sure of "amazing" is really the word, but its a must-own PCE game, IMO.
-
I recommend the cyber cross and cross wiber, makai prince dorabo chan, and, if you count these, the valis games, especially III.
-
JJ and Jeff, along with Ys III, are my favorite platformers so far! If you were a fan of Zelda II, I also recommend War of the Dead, which is an underrated Japanese HuCard very similar to Zelda II.

War Of The Dead has a huuuge bug.

what bug? I haven't played it that much.

The most infamous bug:
If you level-up beyond 9999, it actually resets your experience to 0 (yes, zero) and, accordingly, you return to Level 1.
Personally, I was never really hooked by this game, but I know that I would enjoy it more if I was using an emulator.
Playing War of the Dead on actual hardware has been a challenge (you'll quickly discover why--I won't spoil it for you!).

Nvm, I got it. I just had to die in the game to get the password. Too bad I never die..... ^^
(I found it a little funny an answer were made to the original 1 year old post when I asked another kind of question just seconds ago. :D)

Ive been playing Aoi Blink recently and it seems pretty decent so far, could turn out to be a hidden gem.
My personal favourite PCE platformers are:
Kato & Ken
Dracula X
Jackie Chan
other great games are:
Ninja Spirit (not strictly a platformer)
Adventure Island
Takahashi Meijin No Shinboukenjima
honourable mentions to:
Bakushou Yoshimoto Shinkigeki (funny and has great graphics)
Jigoku Meguri
Legend Of Hero Tonma
Mizubaku Daibouken
Son Son II
A couple of others I haven't played in depth enough yet but from what I've played seem decent are:
Obocchama-kun
Faussete amour

I'll second on legend of hero tonma. Quite something, the animation and slick playability!! Plus it's the only platformer to feature the PC Engine's full resolution mode: 525 x 248 pixels (widescreen). I might be a pixel of two out.
-
Yeah, hero tonma is great, even if not so arcade accurate done like ninja spirit. But at least it is the VERY ONLY port ever done.

Where? Most of Hero Tonma runs in 342 x 240 mode, unless I missed some hidden screens. Anyway, 248 lines would not show up on any display device. The visible maximum that I measured with the PCE hardware was 565 x 242.
Besides, you're forgetting Shadow of the Beast, a platformer with several 512-wide screens.
