I was staring at my shelf today and thought my NEC turbo games look like butt crack! Allow me to explain, I had my games alphabetical order initially, but thought the mis matching labels distracted from the looK. I decided to sort them via label style. Ie: Orange labels, black labels then cd's green, super cd the super cd's2 red. How do you guys present your titles?
-
Alphabetical.
Functionality over visual appeal; I have no idea if the game I'm looking for has a f*cking green or orange spine, nor do I care. I want to be able to find the game quickly without having to think about it too much.
-
i sort by system. Thats the extent of my sorting.
I know where every game is. Its what my friends have come to call the "darovich decimal system".
plus the randomness makes it more fun if someone else cant think of what to play! more variety!
-
By the genre of the game (RPGs in one area, fighters in another general area, etc), but that's about it.
-
i can only talk for my PCE games. i have ordered them in media order -> hucard, super hucard, CD, SCD, ACD, hibaihin/taikenban/misc.
and within the media, in manufacturer order -> hudson vol., namcot, irem, taito etc...
-
I just sort everything by system, then by region (mainly because of the difference in box/case size for Saturn, GBA, etc from region to region) and then (and this is only for the PCE) by system sub-type (HuCards, CDs, SuperCDs, ACDs).
-
I put all of my shooters together. The other games are then placed together. :) That really is it for me.
-
Well, how about this then?
You could sort your titles first by color label and within each color label group, sort the titles alphabetically.
-
@ Dark fact Thats exactly what I did. Initially it bothered me that sequels would not be together, but I liked the visual appeal over the functionality. All my other systems have more uniform cases so those are kept strictly alphabetical. Since you all sound like me do you all keep your systems stored in their original boxes and take em out when you get ready to play or do you all use multi-sys. selectors and keep all your sys. plugged in? If its the latter, whats the best system selector to own if you have a grip(lots) of vintage systems?
-
I sort alphabetically. No more, no less. I agree with Nat. I'd like to be able to find a game quickly with no hassle than make a pretty pattern that serves no purpose and makes it harder to find something.
-
I understand your sentimant ajak but most of us know if a game is a cd or a hu card. I don't have any problems finding a title, now ask me about sorting pc engine games.....toughy :P

likewise. only PCE.
-
Alphabetically
-
By height.
-
I sort like exile (OP) does, but only with my Turbo games and it is clumsy. I think I will just separate them into HuCards and CDs and be done with it, with each section being alphabetical, of course.
However I always put sequels together even if they have a different name (my Blu-ray collection sees Batman Begins and The Dark Knight sitting together, etc). The only exception would be f one was on CD and the other was not.
-
Yeah I always put sequels together as well, even if it breaks the alphabetical flow for a moment.

Big random pile shoved in the wardrobe.

it's the fastest way I can think of to find a game, especially when there are several hunderds. and it makes most sense for me of how games should be ordered, especially for the hucards, since they are labled with the manufacturers name and some of 'em even numbered.
-
Big random pile shoved in the wardrobe.
That is how I organize all the games that are currently being played. I should get a small box or something, just to make things easier.
-
I do it System>Region>genre>sequels together and current favs or new ones stand in front or on top displayed face foward. plus u can get cheap lil stands to display them on like an mini Art Easels. And the system order is size order dvd size to cd system
-
I once had mine in numerical order by converting the titles to binary and adding all the ones together, but that was a tad confusing for humans and consequently abandoned. Now they're sorted alphabetically within genre groups.

This is how I have mine sorted also. I may change it in the future, but it is most visually appealing to me. I am about to clear some room out of my basement and will finally be able to buy some decent shelves in stead of the CD rack I have everything piled on that is about to break in half. Anyone have any suggestions for nice shelves/bookcases?

For best fit make'em ur self. figure out the dimensions you want and get the wood cut from a lumber store or Home depot., Loews type place, get long wood screws (or sheetrock ones) and feel proud of your accomplishment every time u see it (like i do about my MaMeCast Cabinet) you can start small......or go to gothic cabinet and they start u off with basic stuff u can ask to modify any part of. although i dont know gothics prices.

Ah, if only I had a garage. Condo life sucks sometimes.

Call me snooty, but I only like to see books on shelves.
Everything else (CD's, DVD's, games) are hidden in cabinets or in the closet.
The CHEAPEST, and perhaps the most practical solution for you:
1: Commandeer a closet.
2. Take everything out and line 3 walls with adjustable shelving system (like this this one (http://www.rockler.com/ecom7/product_details.cfm?Cat_ID=174&offerings_id=106&catid=15&objectgroup_id=44&cookietest=1) ...dirt cheap at Home Depot/Lowes and super-easy to install).
3. Cut wood shelves to fit closet (if you prefer, white melamine fiberboard is always available).
4. You can still store stuff in the closet--get a rolling cart (you can easily pull out) if you really want to maximize space.
5. When you leave/sell the condo, take down the brackets/shelves. You can leave the metal tracks on the wall (since they do not interfere with anything). Otherwise, remove the tracks and simply spackle a handful of tiny screwholes. No one will ever know.
:)

I dont have a closet in the basement (where all my gamimg stuff is). I am going to have an open wall soon, so I was going to pick up 1 or 2 bookshelves to fill the area. I was looking for something cheap like these (http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/491665/Realspace-Premium-Wide-Bookcase-5-Shelf/). The only reason I was complaining about the condo is because I dont have a place to work on projects like this (that require woodwork) or even my car :(
-
i live in a NYC apt .. I dont have a garage area either. But like i said u can ask lumber spots to do all the cuts for u when u buy the wood doesn't cost extra usually . just measure what size u want in between shelves and how deep how wide ...hell you can copy measurements from a pre-made u like an jus save money an feel like a macho man.
-
therefore i'm using those comfortable, very compact & easy movable desk boxes:

I suppose I no longer get sympathy for my "losing games" post...

TATS, do you actually use the computer as pictured, or do you rest the keyboard on your lap?
Either way, there's NO LEG ROOM!
You crazy bastard!

What happened, did a Hudson Bee explode in that room?
-
I sort alphabetical, by system. I tried 10 different methods with the PCE/TG titles due to the 50 different spine label designs and ended up going alphabetical with those also, just separated hucard and CD.
And all the games sit in one of these.

I have the same shelf but I got mine at Wal-Mart for $20

I saw the Wal-Mart one but went with this one for its larger size and the ability to add a couple extra shelves to it. It feels sturdier too.
-
I converted a closet in my house to shelves that hold my games. I sort them by system and then by type of game.

löl. i like it on the floor :) when i'm not eating, i'm always on the floor.

The funny thing is that I love sitting on the floor and using my laptop. I also use a floor pillow and watch movies/tv on the floor.
:)

Ouch! that makes me sad seeing all those goodies laying on the floor like that. My wife complains about the games being exposed on cd style book cases, so ideally would like to get bookcases with doors to cover everything up. I'll prpbably end up paying the piper and have someone build me a custom book shelf set-up.

I feel the same way as your wife. Keep stuff hidden!
You can buy doors separately (IKEA, for example), so it is possible to get cheap bookcases and then slap nicer doors on them. If you want it to look even nicer, you can buy molding at the Home Depot and trim the bottom and top... this helps create a really uniform "built-in" look when you have 2+ shelves adjacent to each other.
-
I use milk crates.
lots of em.
you stack up up and have shelving units.
plus you can zip tie them together for stability and crap.
and then if you need to move them just turn them over and carry them with the handles.
Ingenious.

Mine are all in three shopping bags, and I just rifle through them. I'm a terrible person.

Well paper. Got to have some structure at least.

Screw mother earth; one day she will poison us all with her powerful neurotoxins.

Having used the same two paper bags for nigh on 5 years, I think I'm actually pretty good on that front. Though the games do stack out the top by about 6 inches.
-
go jack some milk crates from your local dairy queen and use those instead.
a pack of zipties and a few minutes of ingenuity and youve got a shelf!
a damn good one too!
-
Tall stack next to the game TV. Street Fighter 2 and Bomberman 93 on top, then my top shooters, Then my top sports games, then all the action adventure games, pinball, stategy and on the bottom my bad sports games.
-
...and on the bottom my bad sports games.
Bad sports games always form the strongest foundation! If you want to ensure the structural integrity of a structure, be sure to use bad sports games (well, sports games in general) as the foundation.

Hey esteban, love the pic and quote. Use to play Battle Royale a ton as a kid with my friends. Also been playing it alot this winter with my 5 year old. She loves that game, I think the beauty of it is the simple controls.

Dear Lord, I never thought of playing Battle Royale with my daughter, but now that you mention it, of course I'll have to see if she finds it even remotely interesting.
She likes watching (for brief periods) Kato & Ken, especially when our hero "squats down"... she is totally in the "scatological phase" and any reference to flatulence (or bird/dog poop) is amusing to her. You can imagine the "jokes" she devises on a daily basis.
-
my tg16/duo games are sorted alphabetical but it stops there... the rest of my games for other systems are a complete f*ckery!!
As i buy a game it goes into the self next to the most recent, or sometimes i like the sweet games at the top my shelving and the not so shit hot rounding out the bottom. All depends on the system and the games for it.
Its a mad mans room i tell ya....and has nothing to do with my wine drinking :P

you sir have just coined a new phrase which I will be using daily.
