Title: Which is the best 6 button PC-Engine controller
Post by: pepharytheworm on January 06, 2010, 05:18:21 PM
I need to get a 6 button pc engine but I need help choosing. So far I found three different models. Here's my pros and cons of each one so far, if you can add some first person experience that would be great since I can only go by how they look.

AVENUE PAD 6
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3381/3266102042_94f0450aa0.jpg)
pros:
Looks the most like a regular pad
Official pad (at least I think it is)
Easy to find
can be had for cheap if patient
cons:
Looks uncomfortable
It doesn't look like all buttons have turbo switches
Ugly color scheme

Hori FIGHTING COMMANDER
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3584/3683773950_ac8bb92ef6.jpg)
pros:
Looks like a snes controller and I love the way those feel
All button have turbo switches
Looks pretty nice
not too expensive

cons:
Won't feel like a pc engine pad
Button I and VI share the same turbo switch
Won't match my pce duor
not easy to find

Duo RX pad
(http://www.genkivideogames.com/Images/PCETP1small.jpg)
pros:
Looks like a PC-FX controller and those feel real nice and are comfortable
All buttons have a turbo switch
Official pad
Would match my Duo R

cons:
Hard too find
Can be expensive
Yellows easily/hard to find a non-yellowed one

So what do you guys think. Which should I choose? Are there any more pads I missed?

lol..here we go again :)

IMO you can trash the DUO RX pad. to bulky and the d-pad is a torture. altough some peeps swear on it.

the hori fighting commanderPC and the AVE 6 button are both great pads IMO. it just depends of which d-pad you prefer more. the one from the existing PCE pads or the SFC one.

the hori pad has only one disadvantage, because the most left turbo switch V could be in your way whilst using it for fighting games like SFII. but if you don't mind, you still can rasp 'em down to flat level with a file  :P

I figured the members here might have more info to share then ASSEMbler. So how about I give you $2 for the rx pad you spent $1 on:D

I've yet to use a Hori or RX pad, but I can give you my thoughts on the Avey:

Looks uncomfortable

Yup, it is; the D-Pad makes my thumb sore after a while.

It doesn't look like all buttons have turbo switches

Most titles with six button support are fighters (where using turbo mode is generally counterproductive), so this is kind of a non-issue.

Ugly color scheme

Meh.  Just keep your eyes on the screen instead of on the controller.

Are there any more pads I missed?

I don't think so, though there's a few six button sticks available.

Glad you finally made a decision on buying both the first and second choices you listed. It was getting annoying reading the same thread on at least three different websites.

Then again, I have the same buy/sell thread on a few sites... so I guess I'm a hypocrite!

Regards,

Breetai/Firebomber7/Khyron/any other Robotech/Macross name I use in the future.

I agree with whatever Firebomber7 says.  I've not no choice, really.

Now why did it take this site upwards of 6 months to approve this username when the other only took a day?  Makes no sense.

It took two months till I was even able to be approved to join.

I will call this my breaking the ice thread. O:) I've been using it as my first thread to see how the new sites I joined respond to get a feel for the type of answers to expect un upcoming threads. I didn't post it a Neo-Geo.com though  They seem to bite your head off there if you say something even remotly an opioion.

I've heard the hori is best - looking for one now. the avenue has the d-pad too far in, and isn't very comfortable.

That's why you mod the Multi.  :)  Actually all horis should be modded regardless of system, the buttons always suck for some reason.

There's a higher ratio of a-holes at that site than just about anywhere else on the internet.  I'm fairly regular on Racketboy, DP, Assembler and on this site (mostly in the chatbox), and lurk on quite a few other gaming forums from time to time.  The ONLY one I've had really bad experiences at (other than one moron at DP) was at the ng site.  Perhaps they like a large system like the Neo Geo in order to make up for something they lack?

That, my friend, is the Hori Commander PC. You'll also see the same layout (but with different colors/branding) on the PC Commander and Twin Commander.

yeah I have the white and orange hudson-branded one where the controllers stick into each other quasi-3DO style. pretty weird.
