Well, the best advice is to "follow your heart" and pursue a career you love...

But, realistically, you are probably going to feel better if you have some income ($$) and, well, job security.

So, I would recommend opening up your own DVD rental store.

Job growth in areas that have a majority of jobs paying basically peanuts isn't much.

The middle class is rising in China and shrinking in the US...  makes me sad.

I think he must have been joking. Video rentals stores are doing very badly these days, and its only going to get a lot worse. Between cable/satellite, Netflix/Hulu, and iTunes I really don't understand why anyone would rent a movie from a store at all, especially on DVD since you can own it for keeps for usually less than $15...and it won't be scratched to hell.

I really really miss the days of home video as a premium item, but these days its treated more like a public utility so I wouldn't invest anything into it.

Whatever the best career for you is, it isn't what people will tell you it is. Whatever they are telling you is the same thing they are telling everyone else. These days of course everyone looking for a career change is supposed to study to be a pharmacy tech. In three years though the PT market will be as overcrowded as the IT market is today.

Esteban?!?  I guess there's a first for everything.  :)

Agreed.  Blockbuster is test driving a plan to convert its stores to retail only, but I don't see how that can't fail.  Between big box retailers like Best Buy and Walmart and online warehouses like Amazon, how can they possibly compete on price and/or selection?

They could definitely compete with the brick and mortar when it comes to selection. The only place left to buy DVDs these days is Best Buy and a lot of their locations are scaling back MASSIVELY on their selection of movies and music. The big book stores, Barnes and Nobel and Borders have decent movie selections but the prices are absolutely horrible. If someone could work toward a Borders-like selection and still have decent prices they could make it. Basically what Suncoast and Media play were before they moved into the keychain and stickers market.

Of course, even if they totally kicked ass at that, they'd just be in jeopardy again in five years when all physical media starts to become extinct.

At least around here Suncoast/Fye... all the "mall chains" had prices that were damn near as ridiculous  as Borders/Barnes & Noble.  They had GREAT selection, but when there's a Best Buy & Walmart a few blocks away there was no contest price wise.

This is a sad, but (probably) true reality.  Atleast I enjoy owning a physical copy,  instead of a digital download (like for any HD movie that will probably be down-sampled).

Call me old fashioned, but I like having a game disc (or cart/card) that will always be there (as long as it is taken care of) instead of relying on a download service that will probably not be archived.  Suppose the Dreamcast had downloadable only games; you'd be screwed.  Since all of there servers have been taken down after pulling out of the hardware market, they would drop support, hence you will only have the games that are on your storage device.  What if it goes corrupt?  What if you ran out of space (back in '99 storage was still a premium) and only had room for 3-4 games.  That would be ALL you have, unless you turned to piracy.  If it was download only, Im sure systems would be in place that made piracy harder to do.  So, it may not even be an option.  Then you have a console with 3 games on it and you know one of them would end up being like Where's Waldo or something.  I dont want that future.  Not with Waldo.

Yeah, I still prefer physical copies. As for download serves going down...I'm really bothered by this possibility/inevitability. The recent case of people having their Kindle copies of 1984 de-activated after they purchased them was a wiff of the future for sure.

I think companies like Nintendo will do a pretty good job of keeping their shit working in the future, and when the Wii is 15 years old figuring out some way to migrate you to new platforms, but stuff like iPhone games from small publishers...forget it. That shit will be gone as soon as you drop your iPhone.

I'm not a fan of the whole downloaded content thing in general.

I'm a sucker for packaging and physical media. :-/

Why not? I do. I miss the smell of stuff printed in Japan pre-21st century. Whatever they used in Japan smelled differently in the 80s than it does now. The smell of printed material now is pretty much the same world wide. When I want that nostalgia I go to my old Roman Albums and issues of Animage with Nausicaa on the cover.

You are absolutely correct.

All of my MSX games smell very different and very nice.  At first I thought it was all just the original owner.  But then more games all smelled the same.  How could tons of random japanese peoples stuff all smell the same!

*sniffs hydlide manual*

ahhhhhhhh.    Glorious.

Yeah, call me crazy but I sniff all that shit too.

I'm starting to feel really old though, it's not going to be easy on me when physical media becomes extinct. I don't think I'm going to adapt well.

me either.  and its not even that im old (haha youre old. >_<)

its that it sucks.

I cant go 'hey friend wanna borrow this game and i borrow that one? OH WAIT I CANT BECAUSE ITS DOWNLOADED"

and then "oh yeah ill bring it over we will play" is going to turn into having to bring your whole effin PS3 or whatever around.

no more bringing carts/discs to school and swapping for the week.

I'm not convinced that physical media will die, at least not anytime soon.  Unless a lot of content is cut from games to reduce their size, a technological leap in bandwidth and storage space will be needed before games can be easily downloaded.

First off, they'd take forever to download.  PS3 games are going to dual layer discs (50 gigs), which would take about two hours to download in Japan, where the average internet connection clocks in at 60mbps; it gets even worse in the US, where it would take nearly a day with the typical 5mbps connection.  Plus, the server demands that a big launch game (such as Halo 3) would require would be astronomical; just imagine - a million plus copies downloaded in 24 hours (that's 50+ petabytes!).

Secondly, hard drives just aren't big enough; the largest 2.5" drive available today holds 1TB, which is less than 20 games.  Of course, hard drive density will continue to increase (historically doubling roughly every two years), but game size has been keeping pace.  I suppose they could use 3.5" drives and/or multiple drives or switch to SSDs, but then they'd be driving up the consoles cost and risking the all important 'coolness' factor.

My third point, which has nothing to do with game size, is that they'd miss out on all the suckers collectors buying multiple copies with special editions and what not.

Yeah, all of that makes sense, but I don't think its enough to keep the production of shiny metal discs going.

Download services for things small (iTunes, Wii Shop, XBLA) and large (Steam, PSN) are extremely popular right now. Storage and bandwidth are somewhat of a problem...but not really. All that stuff just keeps improving all the time. There will be a $100 10TB HD in five years, I'm sure. And two hours being a long download? If you live in a big metro area (or in total BFE) the trip to the store and back is likely to be somewhere around two hours anyway.

I'll miss the LEs, but I think the publishers will deal with it just fine. The money lost from the LE will be more than made up for by the much more profitable nature of selling games as a download. Also, people are already getting used to data as part of an LE. "Pre-order [insert random Clancy POS here] and get a gold plated AK-47 for your main character" kind of thing.

Its pathetic. It all sucks, but I'm afraid its here to stay.

Speaking of goddamned snow plows, I spent 2 hours shoveling this morning (rocking out to C64 SID tunes, of course) and I felt pretty good.

Well, I just looked outside and... well, it looks like I haven't shoveled at all.

UPDATE: My awesome neighbor, who just bought a lawn tractor + plow this summer, rang the bell and offered to plow the entire driveway. I LOVE HIM!

NOTE: You'd think I would have invested in a snow plow by now, considering that this is the fourth snowy winter I've endured upon moving back to NJ.

BACK ON TOPIC: Buffalo gets a ridiculous amount of snow (and is way colder) compared to northern NJ. I am glad I'm not in Buffalo.

Buffalo actually has a really awesome retro gaming scene...  and by awesome retro gaming scene, I mean me!!!!

I love living in the only city on Earth where if there is 2 feet of snow that falls overnight, there is absolutely no way I am getting off of work.  I know this, because it has happened many times.

Buffalo would be #1 on that list, but the people who made the list probably never heard of it.

I lived in NYC too, and I can attest the winter there is not even in the same ballpark.  Its not even the same f'ing sport.

If it makes you feel better, I have to go to work tomorrow as well. Even though I suspect that my train will be super-delayed tomorrow morning.

I know, I know, you're shedding a few tears for me.

ASIDE: Rochester is also pretty crazy when it comes to winters.
