Title: Sprite Sheets
Post by: mrhaboobi on January 27, 2010, 07:26:02 AM
Hi Guys.

ive posted this in the other forum more specific to pc dev, but wondered if it would hurt to post in here aswell.  ( if so you can close the thread )

Im after sprite sheets for TG games, ive had little luck extracting myself, but wondered if anyone had a tool or could provide a web site that may have most of the ones im after.  Alternatively if there are arcade ports of the games ( like tonma ) then a resource for that would be fine :)

Thanks

"Hey Guys.

im dabbling in XNA and PSX coding, just getting my head general game concepts.

Wanted to use some PCE/TG16 games as a way to learn wondering if anyone knows of a good sprite resource for games like Legend of hero tonma, star soliders etc.. just wanting to re create the odd game and learn before making something totally original ( i cant draw for peanuts  )..

hope someone might be able to help

greg"

I swear I replied to this? !

have you tried opening Hero Tonma in Mednafen and using the vram viewer?  It shows all the sprites.

As far as I know, there is know tool I know of for ripping or viewing sprites, but it sure would be nice to have one, no doubt!

did you be sure to do:

load game
go to actual game (not title screen)
alt-d (debugger)
alt-2 (vram viewer)
press right arrow key (sprite screen)
scroll down til you see sprites...???

Yup those were the steps i followed.  I scrolled a long way down intially i was presented with a large dark blue block.  After this, nothing essentially i was scrolling and there was nothing to see , just the numbers ticking up.  I could see all/most of the background, but character sprites were not there.  On the odd occasion i did some something other than the dark blue, this was normally right at the top of the scree, and at best it was a black or grey image, not very clear, perhaps issues with CLUTS ( does the PCE use these? )..  So no luck with Tonma and the debugger.  Welcome t give it a try and see if you have any luck, could it be an emu setting i have wrong..  does anyone know if MAME can rip sprites?

No tools, just one frame at a time, each one of these took me less than 3 minutes.

well you're better than me or at least more patient:)..  if you feel like ripping the entire game then that would be great, could you email me the original graphics?  any chance they can be put on top of a different background such as magenta :)..  thanks alot for your help..

Like the shade of magenta below?

Are you using Magic Engine? you might want to download the emulator, Ootake, or wait to see if Arkhan can figure out hero tonma and the mednafen debugger.

So could you explain the process you are going through to get teh graphics.. i have access to photo sho, just wondering how you are doing it and then i can give it ago..  yeah magenta is good, its a colour that the graphic doesnt use so i can easily set it to be the transparent background, either that or putting then on a transparent background would be fine aswell then i can add different background layers :)

ah. bummer.   I opened it in mednafen.  You can see "some" stuff, but its all jacked around.  If that is even Tonma.  Broken into pieces.

awacks the master of rippin' stuff anyway. ;-D

if i had to guess , aren't you screen grabbing on a per-frame basis, with the background layers all turned off so all you see is sprites?

and then copy pasta to photoshoop and away you go?

A quick tip - if you find it too much hassle to try and keep pausing/screenshotting for certain frames, use Fraps (or similar) to record some video, then load it up into a program like VirtualDub and copy the frames you need straight out of that.

Besides the Pixel Warehouse web that has been mentioned previously, there are other webs with several ripped sprites of many systems (although the PCE is m¡noritary). For example you can try:

http://www.spriters-resource.com/
http://sdb.drshnaps.com/

The last link has the sprites of Dragon curse or Neutopia II of the PCE.

Yep, but the key is having the right emulator, you need one with an, advance one frame at a time function.

I just  ripped, nearly the entire game in 30 minutes, thats the easy part.

Here are a few more.

well yeah, the "advance frame" button is kind of implied.  :-D

maybe you should start a site with all the sprite sheets and stuff.  Its not like you dont already have a jillion from all the screen compares. :)

You should definately do this, it seems a waste to limit them to forum threads that might get lost in a few months/years.

Ah, my mistake, back in the old days all you had was the pause button.

About the sprite rips and their own site, i might do that some day, an interesting side note, the whole reason i started screenshot, sprite rips and versus threads was because forum post/activity took a nose dive a while back, so i tried to bump up the activity a bit with threads i thought people might be interested in.

Rips are great, thanks alot, will give me something to play with.. a site dedicated to PCE rips would be excellent, Magical Chase is another id like and r-type :) but will play around with this.. if you think there are more graphics in teh game then let me know :) thanks alot.. most apprecaited..  background rips would also be very useful, but not sure how easy or hard that would be
