What are some of your favorite sound FX from PCE games? CD or hucard, doesn't matter. I find that, when done right/good, I tend to like PCE sound FX best for games in that era. Yeah, they tend to lack some nice explosions, but I mean the general utility sound FX.

 List some of your favorites from games.

One of my absolute favorites is the sound made by swinging Keith Courage's lazer sword. 8) (while in the robot suit, of course!)

I love the noise that occurs when you punch people in Vigilante

also, the noise you make when you flip in Bonk.

Do samples count? I love the enemy laser and explosion sounds from macross 2036, and the boss explosion sounds in Gate of Thunder.

Any of the sounds from Dungeon Explorer / Legendary Axe II.  They have a great metallic "presence" to them.

The helicopter take-off from Kyukyoku Tiger is the best sound effect ever.

Any of the sounds from Dungeon Explorer / Legendary Axe II.  They have a great metallic "presence" to them.

A 100% axe smashing into a formidable enemy/boss is one of the most visceral moments in Video Game History. This, I declare :)


Also, here are some TOP SFX:

(1) The wonderfully bass-laden "bluuuubluuuubluuuu" when you shoot the spacefalling brains in BLAZING LAZERS.

(2) The extremely satisfying, BASS-LADEN explosion sound when you blow up certain enemies in BLAZING LAZERS (if I remembered the sound test in the game, I'd find the goddamned number of that sound). A lot of the sound effects are variations, but this one, this one adds a distinctive bassy BOOOM underneath everything else. Quite satisfying.

(3) The screeching tires in Victory Run and screeching shoes in JJ & Jeff. Whoops! Those are two of the most annoying sound effects. Victory Run, in particular, is marred by the horrible screeching tire sfx. INEXCUSABLE.

(4) Wonderboy III: Monster Lair sound effects, taken as a whole, I like, because they actually become a very important soundscape unto themselves, in tandem with the FANTASTIC Red Book. Honestly, playing Wonderboy III: Monster Lair, for me, is a GRATUITIOUS, NON-STOP fruit-bursting, fruit-snatching, power-up grabbing FIASCO. It wouldn't be nearly as fun if the sound effects fell flat. DON'T PLAY WITH TURBO SWITCHES, because that ruins the SFX soundscape.

the sound of the hearts showing up in splatterhouse at the beginning of a stage
the "hurt" sound in valis III

that's all I can think of off the top of my head at the moment.

and NOT the shots in Rayxanber.

Cybercore--when you get hit and POWERDOWN... it's such a depressingly appropriate sound effect. It is MOURNFUL.

Oddly, it's also the same sound effect as when you shoot potions in Dungeon Explorer.

Shaft, as he calls out the three different attacks...Lightning, fire and spinning orbs, the last boss in Kaze Kiri has a really cool sounding(and looking) attack in which he shoots a large beam from his hands, i also agree about Legendary Axe 2.

I will have to think about this for a while, but the ones that come to me off the top of my head are:

The explosions and ADPCM voices in Gate o' Thunder.  There is also an enemy/set of enemies in level 3 that shoots waves at you (in sets of 3, like woosh-woosh-woosh... pause... woosh-woosh-woosh, but it is not a woosh sound, much more sci-fi) just as the music hits a kind of high and the effect is awesome.

All of the weird sounds in Legendary Axe 2, which are all buzzy-sounding (not to be confused with "scratchy"), but are perfect.

Yes it is.  Even when I listen to the music by itself, I imagine the sound effects at that part.  It's just so perfect for some reason.

I like the "Shhhiinnnng" sound the moving platforms make on the third level (snow level) of Bonk's Revenge.  I hear that sound everywhere, like the "tink-tink-tink" sound grenades make on Call of Duty 4.

 I agree. I thought the sound FX in Bonk were great (and the music instruments too, but that's a different story).

 LA II and DE have some classic FX. I also love the sound FX in BL when you shoot the brains! Love that sound FX. I was looking through it to see if I could replicate it and it turns out - it's just a sample. Still, sounds pretty clear for a sample.

 Would you guys be interested if I made a "rom" that you could make your own fancy PCE sound FX in? Who doesn't like making sound FX :D

 Sure. That's easily doable. And the whole thing (interface) would be done in game, with the gamepad. A bit of a chore, but at least it would be on the real system.

 For the HES thing, definitely. Charles Macdonald write a generic converter, but it lacks onscreen display. I was gonna add display to it, but there wasn't much interest in running the HES files on real hardware, so I left it at that. HES files are specifically code (driver), so it's totally doable to have them on "CD" and just load in whatever HES file to play (sort of how I converted some of my NES hacks to run on PCECD). I'm currently writing a music player for pce (just something simple for a fellow peer to make music on) - so I'll be in that area on the PCE. And as for collection of ripped SFX, that's very doable too. I've been meaning to steal... err ehm.. borrow some sound FX that I like from other games :D

 I'll takes with Charles M. about doing a CD version of his original HES converter app (with a GUI of sorts, maybe even additional onscreen real time stuff).

Veering a little off topic on a flight of fancy here, but in my dream world I see this:

A music player that takes the .pce / HES sound rip Roms, determines which ones you have loaded, displays track names and skips blank tracks or sound effects (or shuffles the effects to the end of the list). Is that possible? (Assuming someone would have to go throught the Roms and manually work out the names of tracks).

WHAT????  I could think of nothing cooler.  I don't care how rudimentary the GUI is, just give me the name of the HES file ("Jackie Chan" or whatnot) and the number of the sound and I'd be happy.  Maybe a "Load HES" or whatever option would be good, too.  I'd want a CD with every card game on there.  So many games don't have sound tests that desperately need them.

I like almost all the axe smacking sounds in Legendary Axe the first. They have a crack to them, but also kind of a rubbery boing sound. Weird combination, but I like it.

Tom, please put 1,000 of my votes in the "want to play tunes on real hardware."

And, like Joe, I don't care how archaic the GUI is, I just would love to listen to the console pumping out music.

Esteban: It'll have to be released in "volumes" or music disk. A few songs at a time. I mean, for CD. Because each hucard ripped has to be hacked for CD addressing space (CD HES rips are easier to do). I was hoping I could find some help (maybe some of the well known HES rippers/hackers). It's a tedious process (making these classic/retro music disks). If these were just turned back into regular roms, then it wouldn't be a problem (you'd need a flash card to play them still).

I like "Dragon spirit", check this video which including the 1st stage BGM from NES, PCE, and AC versions. I think PCE version is awesome! Especially for the high, crystal clear tone. :D

Whilst I love the arcade version of Dragon Spirit, I feel that the PCE tunes are the sweetest: the PCE, with the subdued drums, places emphasis on the wonderfully warm, smooth, layered "synths"--a very "full" sound. Cozy. Comforting. I love it.

The arcade, while featuring a nice arrangement, has a significantly less lush sound and the overall mood is somewhat cold... the arcade is not as endearing as the PCE version.

Or in other words:
PCE = HubbaBubba
Arcade = Bazooka (flavored!)
FC = DubbleBubble
