hi guys i recenty picked up a pcfx.... Now i have some games coming in the mail but in the meantime i decided to burn 3 games from various places online.... I got Zenki, Super God Trooper and Chip Chan Kick..... i burned all at 4x they all were just a bin and cue file.... When i pop in any of the games it shows a cd read error during opening video scene but the games play fine... I dont have a single scratch on any of the discs..... If i need to calibrate the laser please give me extremely detailed instructions how to do so.... Thanks in advance...
-
what speed did you burn them at, and what discs did you burn them to?
If you didn't burn at 1-4x with some high quality diamond or other brand silverbacked CDs, its not going to work out so great for you.
dont use the cheapo memorex or whatever CDRs with the green/blue/black/red/etc bottoms. Theyre bad for your PCFX

It's been a long while since I tried to backup my games, but I always ripped and burned at 1x with Taiyo Yuden CD-R media. The only thing about the PC-FX is that even the slightest fingerprint can cause read issues (at least mine does) so be careful about your burned CD-R.

i am unsure of the brand as i just grabbed them from my girlfriends house... They were different colors on the top. Like red, blue or purple..... But the bottoms of the discs were average.... They could be pretty cheap brand... I burned them at 4x then retried them at 1x.... I will try a better brand of disc and see what happens... I would like to stress though the discs start to play and some show disc read errors while others just make weird noise during FMV and skip all together.... Other times they play the opeing FMV fine and have no problems... Once i get into the gameplay it works fine but the loading seems long.... I have some memorexs here at work and will take some home and reburn at 1x.... If this doesnt work i believe it could be the laser although i baugt this pcfx from a very trusted source who def took great care of their stuff.... Any other suggestions would be a great help at this point.....

I've got two PC-FX systems one is as good as new and every game I've put in runs without a flaw.
The other has not been treated as nice as it should have!! :( (That is until it came in to my protection! :) )
However that system skiped a lot in intros, I calibrated the laser and everything was hunkydory. Until i got a copy of Battle heat ( not a copy copy but a an original copy! sort off... you know what I mean!!) Anyway it skipped a lot on the not so nice system but worked fine on the next to new! ? Guess what? The CD was dirty!!!! but so little it was hardly visible!!
So perhaps your system has been used alot in the past? and sort of worn out? and now everything has to be superclean to function properly!!

He probably needs to adjust the laser, but I wouldn't bother until he tries some actual pressed games.
-
yeah... dont use those cheapo cdrs! they dont work out so good.

i have Return to Zork coming in the mail, should be here today or tommorow it was supposed to be shipped with the system but turns out the items were coming from 2 different sellers... Once i get it i will test it out and let you know what happens..... I also tried sony cd-rs and i had better results for the most part but still showed some skipping on certain games. It is possible that the rips im getting are not the best right?
-
As has been mentioned, the PC-FX laser is extremely picky. It's possible that the system works fine but doesn't like the CD-R media you're using.
You won't know until you try an actual pressed game.
-
the rips are prolly ok . All of the cd-rs you are buying are probably crap. thats all :)
you NEED silverbacked ones, so they are as close to real CDs as possible. When you use crappy dyed cds, you always get skipping with the games. I seen it a buncha times with my system w/ weird cheapo CDRs

i received Return To Zork today and the game seemed to play fine... No problems but i didnt play it that long... There are not many FMV parts to that game i really need to test it on something like Battle Heat to confirm for sure.... Can someone send me a link to the exact CD-rs that are recommended?

Can someone send me a link to the exact CD-rs that are recommended?
As noted by Mr. Nanto, these (http://www.yuden.co.jp/ut/product/disks/disks01.html) are what you want. You can find 'em for sale at many fine retailers (newegg, amazon, etc.).

Even then, please keep in mind that your mileage may vary. The PC-FX is not "supposed" to be able to play CD-Rs, and an inability to play them (even high quality silver-backed ones) does not necessarily indicate a malfunction with the system. NEC didn't create the PC-FX with the hope that it would be compatible with home-burned copies of games.

http://www.gotmedia.com/prodisc-cdr-shiny-silver-diamond.html These work too, as recommended by MissaFX
Diamond Silverbacks. I burned tons of PCFX games on these, all with perfect results.

My PC-FX didn't seem to have any problems loading those cheapo CD-Rs with no labels. My Turbo and PCE are the spoiled bitches when it comes to CD-Rs.
