Title: Neo Geo (2011) short film status - Release on Feb. 16th!
Post by: Pcenginefx on May 12, 2010, 05:03:41 PM
To fans of the Neo Geo:

I am posting to ask for your help and advice for a new tribute film I am working on for the Neo Geo system.  If you haven’t seen what I’ve done with the NEC consoles, please take a look at the following to get a feel for my shooting style and cinematography.

Remembrance: A NEC Console Legacy Film

The NEC PC-FX: A Retrospect

TurboExpress: A Momento

Now that you’ve seen what I’ve done for the NEC consoles, I’m branching out to other systems and I’d love to do the Neo Geo next.  I personally own the Neo Geo CD (top loader) unit & CD games and I just sourced a Neo Geo AES to include in the film as well.  What I would like in terms of feedback from any Neo Geo fan is what games you would love to see featured in the film.  I wish to include as much gameplay footage as possible (similar to my PC-FX Retrospect film) but for time considerations can only feature up to 15 games and I want them to be the games that really capture the essence of what the Neo Geo is all about.

Please feel free to post here or even email me at pcefx@pcenginefx.com (mailto:pcefx@pcenginefx.com) with any thoughts, comments or suggestions on what you would think would make a proper Neo Geo tribute film.  Thanks everyone!

-Aaron

PS:  I have been trying to post this over where I should be asking this: http://www.neo-geo.com (http://www.neo-geo.com/) with no success.  Shawn (the webmaster) has approved my account (multiple times) but I am still unable to get this posted in their General Discussion forums.  If anyone has an account over there and could post this up that would be wonderful as I really would like to hear what the Geo community has to say before I start production on the film.

The Neo Geo forums?  **shudder**  Maybe because it has a link it can't be posted (the forum probably thinks its spam).  They are pretty special over there.  Anyway, I'll send you an e-mail.

When I posted the thread it told me that the message was waiting mod approval however hasn't gone through for days.  That's why I contacted Shawn directly to approve my account (considering who I am, I figured he would be happy to grant me posting privileges, which he did).  But I'm still having issues posting :\

Ah.  You have zero posts, yes? That means you probably are in a pool of new users whose posts (or threads) have to be approved (spam prevention measure).  Can you post in an existing thread?  Likely they are checking, but see no new threads to approve.  They probably have something set wrong in the administrator control panel.  Ask to have your usergroup changed to whatever the normal one is.  It'll only take him a few seconds and you don't have to worry about making x amount of approved posts before getting bumped into that usergroup automatically by the forum.

Personally, I like to have a question and answer scheme set up for new registrants to avoid spam (and keep those who know nothing about the system out).  But whatever floats their boat...

Magician Lord will most likely be the only phyical AES cart in the film so your wish is granted :)

I have also posted over at NGFL which the people over there have started sending me feedback.

Magician Lord, Rage of the Dragons, KOF 95, Real Bout Special FF, Matrimelee, Baseball Stars Prof, Metal Slug (duh), and just for kickers I'd say Neo Bomberman!  ;)

To a lot of people "what the Neo Geo is all about" is King of Monsters 1, 3 Count Bout, and Art of Fighting 1 since they bought an AES instead of a MVS and that's all they can afford. Your video, IMO, should de-emphesise the flea market ghetto and focus on the really awesome stuff:

Blazing Star
Rage of Dragons
Real Bout 2
Magical Drop 3
Samshow 2/4
Shock Troopers 1/2
Twinkle Star Sprites
KOF 98/99/2000/2002/2003
Last Blade 2
Metal Slug (take your pick, my favorite is X)
Waku Waku 7
Super Baseball 2020 (one of the few $10 games I still love)

I'd love to see a Neo Geo tribute.  On top of what everybody has suggested I'd like to see Garou: MOTW in there. 8)

Hell yeah!  For Mr. Nanto, there's probably a law mandating its inclusion.

Haha....I don't want to appear biased by adding Neo Bomberman in there :)  We'll see which games make the cut.

What is everyone's opinion on adding Neo Geo Pocket in there as well?  Should it be included with the AES & CD unit or have it's own film?
Title: Re: Neo Geo Tribute film - need your feedback!
Post by: SignOfZeta on May 13, 2010, 02:59:46 PM
It should have its own film. I have a lot of opinions on the NGP, as does Exodus, so be sure to solicit input for that one.

UPDATE: I forgot about Garou. That one is a must. Neo Bomberman however...isn't very good. :( Its not bad or anything, it just doesn't really kick very much ass. The graphics aren't really any better than they were on the "lesser" systems (worse, in some cases) and its only two players.

If you don't show a little bias in your vid I'll be personally hurt and disappointed!!

Zeta reminded me... I still need to pick up King of Fighters 1, but I haven't seen it around for a long time.  I don't care about 3 Count Bout or Art of Fighting 1.  I have Art of Fighting 1 on the PC Engine Arcade Card CD thingy and it is way more powerful than the NeoGeo version.

Shock Troopers is pretty awesome.  I have that for my AES.  **waits**

When I think of Neo Geo, I think of games like Magician Lord, Viewpoint, Last Resort, Windjammers.

And NGP should have its own, yes.

A lot of the classics are great on the Neo Geo to me, but some aged rather poorly. Some of the well known ones as mentioned, including Fatal Fury 1 are still enjoyable. I still think Fatal Fury 1 is an important entry out of the fighting games on the Neo, even though it's dated and the controls are sluggish.

My personal favorites, roughly are:

Nam 1975
Last Resort
Fatal Fury 1 and Special
Baseball Stars 2
Samurai Shodown 2
KOF 95/96/97  (I like the story scenes and overall presentation, what can I say.)
Art of Fighting 3
Last Blade 1
Shock Troopers 1
Real Bout Fatal Fury Special and Real Bout 2  (It is a tie with these two. RBS would be the best to mention though)
Metal Slug 3  (Say what you will about it being long, but this one just had the most action and fun to me. I like 1, 2, X and 3)
Mark of The Wolves

Notice I don't mention Playmore released titles,  :-" . Yep, didn't really like the new SNK after 2000 that much. Even though, most of the games I don't like from then on, I feel that Rage of The Dragons, KOF 2002 and Matrimelee are pretty decent games. Still, they just don't compare to the original SNK company made games to me.

A good way to go about it would be to pick 1 of each category out of the classics, and 1 of each category out of later releases from maybe 1996-200X. The games changed a lot in the mid-late 90s compared to the games released in the first couple of years. We went from classic arcade to more of in depth and slightly more complicated arcade games. Similar to the transition of arcade games ported on the Genesis and then to the Saturn.

Keep in mind that each fighting game series to me, is a different category when it comes to the Neo Geo. So you got Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown, KOF, Last Blade, World Heroes and Savage Reign even. Then there are the single titles like Gowcaizer, Mark of The Wolves, Rage of The Dragons, etc... I guess, just pick favorites out of each series and then a few single titles that are most liked when it comes to fighting games.

A good list to use would be:

Nam 1975
Magician Lord
Super Sidekicks 1-3 - pick which one
Baseball Stars 1 or 2
Last Resort
King of The Monsters 1 or 2
Sengoku 1 or 2
Fatal Fury 1
AOF 1 or 2
Samurai Shodown 1 or 2
Top Hunter or Spinmaster
KOF 94 and 98
Magical Drop or Puzzle Bobble games - pick which one
Metal Slug 1, 2, X or 3
Shock Troopers 1
World Heroes 1 or 2
Ninja Masters
Last Blade 1
Real Bout Special
Mark of The Wolves

This is just a rough list I would go by. I don't know too much about the puzzle, racing and sports games all that much. I only own a few from each of those categories, but not one puzzle game for some reason.

Hey Aaron! That was me (TheMathius78) who replied on your Neo Geo trailer on You-Tube about getting an AES exactly (more or less) when you started this project. I know you've been asking the guys over at Neo-Geo.com (I am a member there too) for suggestions. They all can be extremely harsh in their criticisms, but please don't let them discourage you. Make the film the way you want to. You have to be satisfied with it, not us.

But here is my two cents....

Back in the 90s I remember when the Neo Geo AES first debuted. It was the biggest, baddest console ever to be released. I couldn't believe it. It tore to shreds every console that got in its way. The only console that ever came close to competing with it was our beloved little PC Engine, and it's Arcade Card. The Neo Geo was in your face! And that, I believe, would be the best route to take as far as presentation. I am sure this idea has already been suggested, but just add my name to that bowl. One member on the Neo forums likened the NEC Remembrance vids to a funeral, and in some ways they are a little depressing. Don't get me wrong, I love those videos. But, the Neo deserves an "In Your Face" style. Turn that sh#t up to 11 brother!

Good luck, Aaron. You have my full support. :)

I still have the letter that the SNK Game Lord Chad Okada wrote to me if you want to use that in the video as a dramatic reading over the visuals.  It basically proclaims that Neo Geo is the Real Deal and that everyone else is a goddamn loser.

I've still not locked down the music I wish to use for the Neo Geo segment due to the fact that I do wish to make this a more in-your-face piece however I'm going for a powerful/epic feel with a short segment for history thrown in.

At this point, the project will most likely be very short - under 3 mins, to facilitate faster cuts - so don't expect anything as long as say my PC-FX film.

I can't wait to get this project done - the amount of flack I've gotten already is surprising to say the least and I've not even CREATED anything yet.  I'm going to try my best to please the Neo Geo community with something never-before-done in a tribute video, but there are people out there who can't stand me getting artsy-fartsy with "their" consoles and think I'm going to make the Geo film feel like a funeral (like I was EVER going to go that route with the Geo!).

Like I said in my previous post, don't let those guys at NG.com get in your head. They love their drama over there, and have alienated many fine people in the process. I figured out how to handle myself over there, and you will too. Just make the film you want to make, and if the old vets over there don't like it then they can make their own films. Probably won't happen though. Your right! They don't own this great console SNK gave us. Give it a tribute that only PCFX can. I have faith in you.

Ha!  That makes me want to make my own Neo Geo short that ends with the system sitting by a gravestone and then text appears on the screen "Neo Geo: it never even had a chance to live".  Then I'd sit back and watch the fireworks.

Oh please do...I'd love to see that Joe!  Make sure to use really depressing music :P

All kidding aside, I really sincerely hope the Geo community will enjoy the film once it is done.  I love filmmaking and only have the best of intentions for the project, but if people hate it...so be it (they can make their own tribute!).

Oh it is still on - the plan is to make it short and sweet... it will only be about 2mins, in the style of a movie trailer.  I pretty much know now how I will be shooting my scenes and how it will look, but I'm waiting to purchase the last piece of my motion control camera dolly system (still saving up for it....it costs $1,000).  Most likely start production in early Aug.

Production on the short film has officially started.  I'm working on the title sequence right now which has a quick 3D SNK logo fly-in, as well as a "neo geo"-like re-design of my own logo.  After that is complete, it's off to start filming the first live-action sequence.

I just bought the AES not too long ago from Japan and was the best condition unit in-box I could find at the time.  As far as the MVS goes, it will be represented by a one slot Japanese unit in motherboard form only.  I would have loved to film with a cabinet, but didn't pan out.

Do you still leave in/near Seattle? There's probably a Neo Candy machine or a dozen of them around there. Hell, there HAS to be a nice American red MVS. There's probably some dude with three of them within 10 miles.

Almost anything on Neo Geo is good. Even a game that is ultra bland and nothing special at all, somehow becomes awesome just by being on Neo Geo. League Bowling, for example, which is simpler than most cell phone games, is fun just because of the Neo Geo-niss of it all.

+1 to League Bowling being a great game.

I used to play it on my original Xbox back in the day, via an emulator. A friend came over, saw me playing it, asked to have a shot and was hooked. His jaw hit the floor when I told him it was a 15 year old game being played via emulation. Testament to the fact that with Neo Geo, the future is now.

SNK had some of the most memorable magazine ads too. I still can remember reading ads in EGM like "I remember when he couldn't keep his hands off me," with the hot girl looking irritated, and her white collar stud playing Cyber-Lip in the background. Good stuff. :)

I always liked the weenie vs hot dog and the ad: "You need a pair of these (picture of steel balls) to own one of these (picture of Neo Geo AES)!"

They did the best they could marketing wise with what they had. Straight facts about the specs of the system vs. other systems. Also, it was aimed towards teenagers and up since no kid's parents would buy one. SNK was smart enough to know that. I am glad it was too expensive in those days. It makes it all more enjoyable now to play it after being deprived from getting one for many years.

You really did get what you paid for back then, an arcade system at home. I remember wanting one after finding out there was a home version after playing Baseball Stars, King of The Monsters, FF1 and then FF2 a little later on. The graphics, sound and gameplay of most of these games were just amazing for their time. This is before they refined their games more like KOF, Real Bout, Last Blade and Metal Slug.

BTW, since Last Blade 1 and 2 never got a proper port, I highly suggest trying these games out. Yes, they are worth $150-$200 on AES... no doubt about it. If you haven't played them, you don't know what your missing. I personally think it is the best weapons based fighter series made. Also, Art of Fighting 3 is a great unique fighting game they made. The character line-up is a little odd compared to 1 and 2, but the game plays very well in its own way. Check out some other games like: Shocktroopers 1 (One of the best overhead shooters ever made to me), Blazing Star, Top Hunter, Spinmaster and Windjammers. Those are some good somewhat overlooked titles.

Last Blade is great. This is a highly overlooked series, and its worth whatever you have to pay.

However, nothing on AES makes sense anymore. L33t-ness aside, its pretty pointless to pay $200 for an AES game when you can get the exact same thing on MVS for $50, and MVS systems will do everything and more than an AES will do.

When home carts were $250 and MVS were $750, it made sense, but now...collectors only. I just bought Metal Slug 3 on MVS for $36 the other day. $36!  You can get the entire MS series on MVS for what it costs to own one MS game on AES and the ROMs are identical. Is a case and instruction manual really worth a couple hundred dollars?

BTW, the NGP version of Last Blade is great too. It starts out as LB1, but as you play it the game sort of morphs into LB2. Its also got cool minigames.

Looks like this will be a very polished production, can't wait.

The motorized light is an integral part of the hardware sequence of the film - don't worry you'll see :)... and if you thought that shot of the AES looks good, man the close-ups are absolutely BEAUTFIUL!!  I really can't wait to get this film done.  I have to do some re-shoots of the MVS motherboard next then I'll be shooting the games sequence.

Windows Media & Quicktime H.264 720p versions of the trailer are now available for direct download.  Forget YouTube - this is how it was meant to be seen!

Windows Media (19MB) - http://www.aaronnanto.com/NeoGeo2011/NeoGeo2011_Trailer_720p.wmv
Quicktime H.264 (54MB) - http://www.aaronnanto.com/NeoGeo2011/NeoGeo2011_Trailer_720p.mp4

Actually .MP4 is not Quicktime, though it can be played back in the QT Player.  .MOV is Quicktime and it can also have H.264.

Anyway, looking good, can't wait to see the whole thing!  Though I imagine the dramatic lighting will piss off the Neo-Geo forum community for whatever reason.  "That's not what the Neo Geo meanz to meee!!"

Yeah, he had one yahoo on there tell him to "Go all, or go home," saying if Aaron didn't put every conceivable piece of SNK hardware in his short film that he should just shut down production. It's that kind of mentality that I hate about NG.com, and why I don't bother much with the site other than buying goodies. I must point out though that I have made a handful of good friends there. But, finding people like that is like searching for a stalk of hay in a needle stack.

While I sort of agree with what some of those guys were saying over there in spirit (the AES is just a plastic shell, what matters in the games, I don't just stare at systems, etc) those guys are DICKS of the highest order. f*ck them.

If the AES is just a shell, then why is it so goddamn sexy?  It's probably in my top 6 or 7 favorite system designs ever.

Man I know how it feels.   I do computer animation for a living.  I have been doing it since 96.  I used to like posting my work on forums, especially CG Channel and some others.  My work is never perfect and I always welcome constructive criticism.  However over these past 5 years there's all kinds of people coming out of the woodwork acting like professionals, when in all reality couldn't even begin to do the work I do.  It's like some people think there's a magic button.  I will never get into doing video games, because the market sucks and the kids that are into new games now a days could really care less how much time and effort is spent.

Man I would've thought people over at NG.com would be loving what you're doing.  I do know what goes into your work I'm glad you're doing it the way you want it.  That's what matters.  It's your project.   You do very professional work.  I take it you do video for a living?

Its always hard dealing with people who don't understand the realities of your profession. I'm an automotive technician, and IMO pretty good at it, but people basically just assume I'm a incompetent gomer thief hack. This is why I got out of dealing directly with customers and now work as a test technician for engineering labs.

See...that's where I can relate to some of the nega-hype you got from the pricks are NG.com. I mean...an artsy shot of $5000 worth of AES packaging really does represent the worst aspect of Neo Geo; hype, money...a downward spiral of bling and consumption and silliness.

Some dude trying to 1CC a home made bootleg Ironclad cart on a cobbled together supergun...that's the real Neo Geo to me, and I would pay money to see a movie like that.

I finally watched this trailer... :) . GREAT STUFF.

One minor quibble: I would have chosen different music for the trailer--music that, to nearly all Neo Geo fans, truly represents and reflects the essence of Neo Geo, such as Hootie and the Blowfish (or Dave Matthews). Otherwise, your trailer was perfect.

I think Neo Geo fans have a pretty wide taste in music, and some of it rather good. There are however a lot of those type of dudes that still think AC/DC and Aerosmith are are the best thing ever though, mainly because they haven't actually listened to any music since they graduated from high school 20 years ago.

If I were to be positive about it, I'd say they like pre-Black Album Metallica. If I were to be negative about it, I'd say they like post-Black Album Metallica. I'm pretty sure none of them like Whitney Houston.

I didn't always shoot wide open to help focus during the dolly shots (and to keep camera ISO to a minimum) and my Tota light was contained in a large softbox so I always shoot at least 700w or higher as I can easily loose a few stops with a softbox/diffusion.

And I sent it to Joystiq on purpose but didn't know they would post it today.  Now if YouTube finishes its maintenance I can make the video public :\

I guess I'll be the Negative Nelly...

Obviously its nice. It shows a great deal of absolutely pro skill, and yes your gear is really good.

However...

...has anyone noticed that all movies look the same now? It doesn't matter if its Iron Man or some heist flick. They all use the same shots, the same timing, the same post tricks, the music is the same (fake digital scores and licensed pop songs) the way the music ties into the timing and the shots...its all the same stuff. You can tell what is going to happen, and when, before it actually happens. Then there is the shakey-cam, lens flair, and the bogus depth of field. It doesn't even matter where in the world it was shot, or at what budget. The tools are cheap enough for any studio to afford now and Hollywood's reach is so far that everyone sees the same stuff. It used to be that Italian movies looked Italian, but now they look just like Korean/French/British/American movies.

This video is all (most, anyway) of those learned, creativity-free cliches wrapped into one thing that just happens to have some Neo fapping material in there. The subject matter could be anything. Over a 1/4 of this video is credits. Of the remaining footage less than half of that is actually in focus. It couldn't be more pompous if it were a Man O War music video. There is nothing accidental about it. This is how the pros do it, and you are very pro, but Jesus isn't it time to do something besides this?

I'm sincerely hope it goes over well on your demo real/resume, but in the meanwhile I'll be watching Keith Apicary.

I haven't really seen ANY movies that look like Aaron's work.  Car commercials, yes.  Movies?  No.  Aaron needs to get Parkinson's Disease™,  and be a complete incoherent spaz on the zoom before he is ready for movies.  He holds the camera way too steady.  Paul Greengrass would hate Aaron with a passion.  But if I had a product or a car that I needed some slick shots of for a commercial, I'd definitely hire Aaron to do it.  He could also work for Top Gear.  But I do agree with your assessment that movies look the same these days.

Aaron, on the 5D you can turn the ISO up to 1000 before you start to notice any increase in grain. Canon says it is actually 1600, so that's why I stick to about 1000 unless I need to go higher in an emergency.

For my next console film, I'm thinking I might do the Dreamcast...but whatever console it may be, it won't be out till summer at least.

And to Joe - to keep the visuals as high-quality as possible I was aiming for a 100 ISO at all times.  The only time I had to even get close to 1000 ISO was during the 4 quick shots of the AES/CD/MVS/Games at the end of the film (before the credits/BTS segment starts).

I just watched the vid, Aaron. Freakin' Awesome! :) I wanted to let the storm die down for a few days before I viewed it. I loved your tribute to the Neo, and I thought the music fit the overall theme well. The close-up shots of gameplay were a little close for my liking though. Them scanlines sure were pretty.

I should've sent you my copy of Viewpoint to put it in the film. It may have lackluster power-ups, and it is balls hard, but it's still a Neo classic. Anyway, thanks Aaron! :D

Let me borrow your copy of Viewpoint and I'll make my second Neo Geo video.  :)

Of course my videos and Aaron's each have their own style, with mine being geared more towards comedy and Aaron's more towards admiration of the product on camera.  That's what I think a lot of people don't get.  He's admiring the system, not necessarily trying to capture the entire spirit of the system that each and every individual experienced.  At least that's what I get out of it.

I am always willing to help. :) PM me if you're serious.

What's your You-Tube channel???

Upon watching the video again, I have to ask this question:  What camera settings did you use to film, oops I mean videotape, oops I mean shoot the games as they were being played on the monitor?  This is always a headache for me as a rolling sync bar usually crops up.  Was being so close to the monitor helpful in this manner?  Also, did you shoot at 29.97fps or 23.98fps?  24fps hates looking at 60hz monitors!

I was curious about this as well. Please describe any/every variable you played around with, such as:

* the ambient lighting in the room (if any),
* the screen brightness/contrast settings on the television/monitor
* the distance from the camera lens to CRT (and, did you zoom in at all?)
* etc.

Thanks! :)

So camera settings were as follows:

Canon 5D Mark II w/24-70mm f/2.8L lens
ISO: 100
F-Stop: 2.8
Shutter speed: 50
Resolution & FPS: 1080p/23.976

Monitor is running at 60hz (LG 27" M2762D)

I'm not sure why there wasn't any rolling sync bar when I was filming the monitor.  I was about 2 feet away from the screen, with very little ambient lighting in the room....

Ah.  No sync bar because it was an LCD, not a CRT.

Well, I want to do something.  I want to do an "inspired by Aaron Nanto" type of short, but not sure what subject to dedicate it to.

Personally, I would love it if you made a film that focused on the lesser known, oddball games for the Neo.  Or, simply, ignore the entire "vs fighting" genre altogether and show what Neo offered to folks like me (I don't get excited about the fighting genre at all).

I'd dedicate it to the few Hudson titles and to fun being a strong word, but that's just me.
