taken from gamespot:
The original Exile was, in its Japanese incarnation, far too difficult. According to Victor Ireland, Working Designs was given a single chance (inexplicably) to tweak the code and lower the difficulty. They overcalibrated, and Exile was a total cakewalk. When porting the sequel, they were determined not to repeat their mistake and instead increased the difficulty. Too much. At the time of the game's release, Working Designs was uncertain if it was even possible to complete the final dungeon (it was later discovered to be possible, but very few can). Together, Exile I and II are perhaps the easiest and most difficult action RPGs ever released.
can anyone elaborate on this? sounds pretty crazy.

Been a while since I've played through them but I remember Exile to be fairly easy and Exile 2 to be easy in one section, then extremely tough in the next, then easy, tough, etc.

Exile U.S>Easy
Exile Wicked Phenomenon U.S>Tough as nails thanks Vic
I herd the JPN version of, Exile Wicked Phenomenon is easy though

Exile II isn't that hard and basically all WD did was make it so you have to hit enemies more and you're allowed to get hit less. That's really not that big of an adjustment in an ARpg. And I never understood the fixation on the last dungeon. It's challenging sure, but impossible, please. I'd like to see people who pass out faux impossible tags play a game that truly is hard.

^^ Like Sword of Sodan.

The only difficult part of the last dungeon of Exile II is the Tower Of Souls. The annoying bat-creatures that fly around can be a pain in the butt as well as the little pink punchy-ladies. Once you get into the Great Ark, it's all timing and memory. And once you pass Djinn (he's actually challenging at first), the rest is a total breeze. The final boss is an utter JOKE but at least the ending is wicked cool. :D

Exile - Anyone can practically beat this.
Exile II - This game is pretty damn easy as well until it comes to the last dungeon. The only other annoying part besides the last dungeon was this one dungeon where you had to level up a bit (in fact, level up all the way), but that's nothing difficult. The last dungeon isn't even that difficult; it mainly requires remembering the patterns, which aren't too hard to remember.
Hey nod, this Exile talk is giving me an idea... :D .

Kool, I never knew that the original Japanese version of Exile was "harder" than the U.S. version. This helps put the Working Designs' version of Exile II into perspective.
