Title: Who here is from Ohio?
Post by: nodtveidt on June 08, 2010, 08:15:20 AM
Just curious, as my wife and I are considering leaving PR and heading to Ohio... would be interesting to know of any PCE playas in the vicinity. :)

Michigan is where my sister in law lives, and I would prefer to avoid her if at all possible. :) The city we're looking at is Toledo...

Have you considered moving somewhere where there are actually jobs? Moving from one state-sized trailer park ghetto to another is...lateral, IMO.

Michigan is great...if you are looking for a place to retire. If you have to work for a living I'd recomend no place near the midwest. North Carolina is nice. Triangle or more east. None of that banjo shit west of Durham.

UPDATE: Just saw the Toledo thing. Awesome place if you want to work at McDonalds. In general, its the sort of place people move away from, not to. Life is too short to make bad money at a job you hate in a dank post-indistrial hell hole surrounded by sad depressed racist gun nuts.

My friend owns Video Game Underground in Toledo, which he has kept running for...I'm not sure...10 years I think, which is amazing for any game store, let alone one in such an economically depressed hole as Toledo.

Toledo isn't bad.   Neither is Cleveland :D

the game store near my house, Video game connection, has been open for over 15 years now, still going strong.  Hes the one responsible for the CCAG also.

Toledo/Cleveland area isn't bad for jobs.  It all depends what exactly you are looking for work wise.  There are TONS of kick ass computer jobs in the greater cleveland area.

North Carolina, you'd probably want to go to Winston Salem.   The Mt. Airy/Pilot Mountain area is OK if you like country settings, but theres no jobs.  Its Andy Griffith Central, literally.

If you mail something to Mayberry, NC, it ends up in Mt. Airy.

Its a 45 min drive to winston though..... with Greensboro a bit further.

I'm about 40 minutes north of Toledo. I go there three or four times a year. There are pleanty of places in Michigan further away from Toledo than me (parts of the UP are probably 11+ hours north of me) but there is no reason to go north of Pontiac, IMO...unless you want to hide a body or something.

We're looking at Toledo for a very specific reason. Also, I've found quite a few number of positions available with the ACOE in Toledo, so it's not like work is scarce... just gotta know where to look and what to look for. I can find work for the federal government just about anywhere.

Um...if thats true, why the hell Ohio? Do you just like squaller, poverty and blight with a healthy dose of supreme flatness? Seriously, Ohio just sucks. Its better than...North Dakota or some shit, but really...its like Michigan, but with the few cool aspects Michigan has taken out.

My reason for moving to Ohio is secret. Statehood pride, and subsequent statehood insult, is juvenile and dismissible. And furthermore, areas of squalor are often perfect for one of the things I intend to do there...so thanks for letting me know that the area I'll be entering is f*cked up, it'll make my job so much easier...

Sounds like Zeta is still bitter over the Toledo War.  If Michigan is a better choice than Ohio (fiscally), then why is it's unemployment rate at 14.9% and its poverty rate at 13%?  Ohio's unemployment rate is only 11.5% (12.1% in Toledo and 8.9% in Cleveland), though its poverty rate is a bit higher at 13.7%.  I say f*ck 'em both and come to Nebraska where the unemployment rate is only 5.3% (5.5% in Omaha and 4.5% in Lincoln) and the poverty rate's at 10.6%.  One caveat: you must like corn.  Or soybeans.

And furthermore, areas of squalor are often perfect for one of the things I intend to do there...so thanks for letting me know that the area I'll be entering is f*cked up, it'll make my job so much easier...

If I somehow portrayed myself as a patriotic Michigander, I'm sorry. That is certainly not the case. My only point was that, if I had to chose between the two, I'd take Michigan. The two states are extremely similar. Most people in Ohio are fat and depressed and cranky, largely due to being poor and having shit weather %50+ of the time. Michigan is pretty much the same thing, minus much nicer scenery, and record stores.

Since what I do (automotive testing stuff) is really big in Michigan, its an OK place for me. I make more money here than I would in Ohio. Everyone else here would probably be better off somehwere else...and not Ohio.

I do not like corn OR soybeans. :P hehehe

But anyways, once the move is made, we're pretty much free to move anywhere else in the country if we so wish. I do have my reasons for Toledo, but that may simply be the initial step out of PR...

Ohio doesn't suck!   Michigan does. :D  That's why all the trees point towards michigan. ooooo :)

Newsflash: Squaller, poverty and blight are all over the country.  Detroit ain't exactly Disneyland.
Every state has it's fair share of lolpoor.

Southern Ohio isn't flat.  Though, flat isn't always a bad thing.

I don't know what is so wrong with Ohio.  We've got Cedar Point, the rock hall, Cooperstown, a bunch of other scenery and shit.  Rural areas, historic areas, all kinds of what not.  Plus Ohio is responsible for the dead boys, devo, and the pretenders, among other things, like Drew carey :D

and we have two zoos!  There is plenty of cool stuff here.

I get the feeling you would have something negative to say no matter what state is being discussed, :D

Lol, your states population is also like, 7x smaller than Ohio :D.   The poverty in Ohio is hilarious though.  It's a bunch of ignorant, lazy idiots acting like they're entitled to everything and don't have to actually work for money.  Sure there are the legitimately less fortunate people... but mannnnnn is there alot of Jerry Springer quality shit going on too.

Either way, to those of you that don't know it... every state in the country sucks just as hard as every other one.  They all have good places, OK places, and OMG WHY AM I HERE places.

When I think of all the bad stuff about Michigan, I don't think of Detroit. I think of the trailer parks, rednecks, grocery stores that make %90 of their income from food stamps, un-marked graves, and poluted well water that make up %90 of the state.

Honestly, I've had a lot of good times in Detroit. Of course since I live in a wonderful neighborhood in Wastenaw county (and before that, Midland) I can just visit when I want and go home, but Detroit does have the DIA, the Zoo, Belle Isle, CCS, and some reletively decent night life. I'm there a couple of times a month.

And to be fair to Ohio, I quite like Cincinati...but its about as close to Toledo as it is to Chicago.

Which would make them domesticated animals, not wild.  Way to bump a two week old thread, just to be wrong.

Yep.  Until the mighty and all-knowing Arkhan came along, I'd never heard of the Himalayans or yaks (excepting Yakety Sax, of course).

Domesticated is a stretch, unless you count the ones in the zoo's.

They're still yaks, and they'll f*ck you up.

and they'll call up their yakalo homees to trample whats left.

then they'll throw up Canuck gang signs and be like

"HATERS GONNA HATE, EH?"

or some jive like that.

Woot, necroposting my own thread :P

Well, it looks like I might be moving a bit earlier than expected... we're going to see tomorrow if my wife can take the newborn to work (the office is very unorthodox), and if so, then I'm going to move to Ohio ASAP with the two older kids, and wifey + baby will move after her assignment is over. And I dunno wtf people are saying about the job market up there... there's jobs everywhere, it's just that people don't wanna work them because they're f*cking lazy. I will have zero problems finding something to do for good money. Housing is cheap too, so that's also not a problem... we're just avoiding the southern areas.

I live in Indiana, but visited Ohio many times in my life. Before I got this dumb arthritis I would go to King's Island or Cedar Point almost every year. Loved the rollercoasters! Now, just seeing a King's Island commercial I get sad and turn it off because I can't ride them anymore.

However, I just went into the city today for a Yankees game...  yes, I am ashamed of this.  GO METS!

Back on topic, Ohio is definitely not anything to be ashamed of.  It is an odd state though, much like PA, once you leave the cities everyone turns into a good ol' boy.

Yeah the further south you go the dumber things get.

right up til you hit sweet gas stations that have signs that say

SANDWITCHS 3$ W/ POP AND CHIPS

FREE WITH PURCHASE OF SANDWITCH

I think that means you can endlessly buy sandwiches and get free sandwiches and since you got a sandwich you get another, or something.

I'm an inbred moron myself so I guess I'll fit right in no matter where I go in Ohio... I'm from southern Tennessee and I grew up in the little hick-village of North Hartland, Vermont. I also spent a year at the base of the Poconoes in Pennsylvania in a little toilet called Pen Argyl.
