Ok, I'm freaking out a bit here. I had bought a Sol Moonarge at a local Tokyo store months back, and recently resold it as a bundle since I bought another large collection that included a new copy of the game.
I was not paying attention but it occurred to me the version I sold looks very different on the outside. In fact the Sping card is GOLDEN, and the back of the jewel case showed "limited edition". The new one I have looks normal, and the spine card is green.

I checked PCE Daisakusen and it looks like we do not have this variation catalogued.
Tats - are you aware of the 2 versions differences in your own collection?
I'm little bit bummed that I wasn't aware of the variations before deciding to bundle up my duplicate and reselling it a few weeks ago... If this turns out to be a super limited version with like 2000 only made... well then I'll shit in my pants...

Spriggan Mark 2 has a similar variation:

What's funny is that they both have a golden spine card. Does it mean it was a kind of "Best series"?

And some a$$hole in the midwest will laugh all the way to the bank.
-
According to the other website the Spriggan Mark II was a "reprint" with the golden spine....
hmmmmmmm
but the Sol Moonarage on the back says limited editions.. not sure which is the reprint..
anyhow, that dude in the midwest is a lucky winner for sure...

You know what, the more I research this, the more interesting it gets! It looks like quite a bit of titles had these "limited edition" re-prints with the golden spine cards?
I mean, even Swartzchild 2 got a limited version - check it out

I guess it's not really a "limited" edition, if so many titles (actually, Spriggan Mark2, Schwartzchild2, Sol Moonarge are 3 I know only) have this variation.
-
Probably just lower priced reprints, like Playstation Greatest Hits.......
-
That's what I meant. Let's see how many titles had a golden, spine card.
-
So far I've confirmed 3 -> Spriggan Mark2, Schwartzchild2, Sol Moonarge.
My Winds of Thunder also has a golden spine, but it does not save the same "masterpiece limited edition" note on the back as these 3. So I don't think it is the same variation.... would be interesting if rest of the members helped to catalog this series... come on guys!

"masterpiece limited edition"
Is that what it says? Well it says it all, then ;)
-
right
名作限定版 (meisakugenteiban) = limited edition of a masterpiece.
-
Well I've confirmed another one with this variation - Star Parodier.
So that brings us to 4 games confirmed total with this "gold spine limited" variation reprints:
-Sol Moonarge
-Springgan Mark 2
-Super Schwartzchild 2
-Star Parodier
.... maybe only games starting with "S" got these reprints

I've also always wondered about those gold spine variations - I was only aware of Spriggan Mk2 and Sol Moonarge, great finds !!!
-
As far as I can remember, Star Parodia only has a golden spine card.
Winds of Thunder also has a golden spine card.
-
My memory might have been playing tricks on me, but I swore if I remember correctly I've seen Star Parodier in regular colored spines.
I do have Lords of Thunder, that one is Golden, but indeed it is not the same "Masterpiece edition" spine.
As far as I can remember, Star Parodia only has a golden spine card.
Winds of Thunder also has a golden spine card.
-
I have 2 CD-ROM Titles that have gold spines.
Kawa No Nushitsuri Shizenha

and
Color Wars
(http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/2210/colwr.jpg)
Are these re-release or did they always come with gold spines?
-
Beats me, but it's fishing sim and a rather tame puzzler..... surely they didn't sell like hot cakes and demand a 'best of' printing. :-k
-
It's quite interesting as both games are not from the same company. I just realised that my copy of Eferia & Jiloria had a golden spine card too (and the grand Golden Axe too).
-
Sometimes golden spines were also commonly from the begin with. So had nothing to do with the any special limited re-prints.
-
interesting for me to mention - the "limited edition" golden spines doesn't seem to be worth more, at least at the Japan stores. I saw another Sol Moon. Golden spine avail, as well as Sprig. Mark 2 with Pink and gold spines... so I guess it's worth noting the variation exists, but nothing to go crazy about... 8-[
