This would be my first REAL Duo action since March of 2008 (When I sold off everything)!!
I have two CD games in my thus far tiny Turbo Collection.
Ys Book I&II (Coming with the Duo)
and
Cosmic Fantasy 2
What game to pop in first? And why?
Perfect way to play out the summer if you ask me!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Why would make you commit such an atrocity? :D
I would say it depends on what you want out of the game. Cosmic fantasy 2 has a more "continuous" story (to me) and develops the characters more, but a lot of level grinding with fights that have no animation. Its a typical JRPG. Y's has a much quicker action and pace but I found myself wandering in caves a lot trying to figure out what I was missing. It has a lot more puzzle solving.
I would go with Cosmic Fantasy 2 first and then Y's. Save the best for last
-
I vote you play Ys first. With your mystery solving skills, maybe this mystical apostrophe can finally be found.

LMAO, I used to do that all the time, I think VG&CE or EGM always listed it like "Y's" lol... I'm still thinking I might do CF2 first. Saving Ys for last would be pretty sweet. Damn I am so stoked.

Picky Picky

As long as you don't play CdRs on it ill be happy :)
-
Way to go, Turbostar! Ys was great. I still haven't finished Cosmic Fantasy 2 myself. It's been a decent game so far.
-
I will never put in a CDr. NEVER!! I'm almost afraid to put in my copy of Implode... holy shit that's right I have Implode too!!! lol. Well I'm still alittle afraid to pop it in cause, if I remember correctly, wasn't there an issue where the style of CD's they used were close to the same as a CDr? Maybe I'm crazy.... well, f*ck I know I'm crazy.
One thing I do worry a bit about is if the Ole Duo will be able to make it through next years "Turbo Fest 2011 Tour" We're planning on doing both Milwaukee's MGC and Chicago's VGS, and the Duo would be powered on for most of the weekend, 10 hours plus each day. It'll get some play love those weekends!!

You're thinking of Meteor Blaster DX, which is a burned disc. Implode is a pressed disc just like all of the official games, so it's perfectly safe to play.
-
oh yuck!! Well, I've never owned Meteor Blaster. Damn that really sucks. I've heard good things about it too. :C
-
I've had it on for hours on end and it never had trouble :P So you should be good!
-
I have NEVER used a CDr and my Duo is near death.... and I know people who have used loads of CDrs and are fine.... its all in the luck of the draw I believe.
-
I'm not sure anyone has ever proven that CD-Rs will kill a CDROM2 system. There is quite a bit of anecdotal evidence though.
It does seem certain than a CD-R can leave your laser parked at the edge of the sled travel, which requires that you move the sled by hand. This is sorta "broken", but easily fixed. It also is possbile that when an original CDROM2 system (hammerhead or briefcase) is parked in such a way that it will shatter the already brittle middle drive gear (that would have broken soon anyway), but personally I've never had the sled parking out of range issue with anything but a Duo, so I'm not sure that can even happen.
So in other words, I wouldn't let this sort of thing keep you from playing Meteor Blaster. Besides, if this is an original (black) US or PC Engine Duo that you are talking about, and it hasn't had a full cap replacement yet, its almost certain to break down on its own any day now regardless.
-
id say Ys 1 and 2 cause it was the first turbo cd game I got when I was a kid. The game was pure magic. its easy fun, great storyline, kick ass cut scenes.... game just rocks. they are both good games . Im sure either one you play will be a blast. whats your next game?

This Duo he's getting hasn't had any caps replaced yet, although when I looked them all over (during the laser tune / replacement) I didn't notice any leakage or anything funny yet. So maybe this one has some life left before cap replacement is due.
It is easy enough to release the jammed sled with some gentle prodding :) I just roll my finger on the motor spindle's gear and it usually comes free easy enough. Also, this unit has philips screws instead of gamebits so if it does jam up on him, its easy enough to open and free up again.
-
You had to sell off everything? :(
-
Yeah, unstickinng the jammed laser is easy, you just have to know that that's what the problem is, which a lot of people don't, so they think the CD-R destroyed their machine.
Has anyone ever jammed a Duo R or IFU30/TG-16CD? I've only ever jammed a US Duo, but I don't play CD-Rs very often.

wow, i can't believe someone would remember the VIDEO GAMES & COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT magazine!!! I think i might still have the ancient issue where they did their year end reviews and Ys won game of the YEAR!!! A HUGE victory for the TG16....too bad the priceyness of the CDunit held it back ](*,)

Hmm, I'll have to look at those. I've only got about 10 issues left after various moves and misplacings. I thought Phantasy Star II beat out Ys I&II for RPG of the year.... I remember Legendary Axe winning Overall game of the year in 1989!! HA!! Take that Nintendo and Sega... too bad more people read LamePro and EGM which were Nintendo and Sega whores, as opposed to VG&CE which totally backed the Turbo till around 1992 when all hope was pretty much lost.
-
Congrats Turbostar! :)

I've jammed a black PCE Duo many, many times without CDR's.

:C Thats no good!! I had two issues with Black Duo's in the past. One time the disk just died and stopped spinning. Worst thing ever at the time. I sent it to whatever company TZD used for fixing Duo's at the time. This was back in 2001 I think. Then the system I got back(No they didn't fix the one I sent they just sent me a different Duo(Missing the Hucard door no less!!)), I'm pretty sure I had a cap/sound issue sometime around 2005 ish. The sound wouldn't work from time to time. The "Redbook Audio" or CD music wouldn't play, but I could hear the sound effects and Chip music just fine. lol, I think that is the cap issue. The strange thing is, that after the system would warm up, say I played a Hucard for about 30 minutes to an hour, the CD music would start playing in any CD game I played. Usually till the system would cool down/ be turned off for a while. Ah... Duo issues.
Still I love the system.

My only "working" Duo right now has the same sound problem you mentioned, though it doesn't need to be a HuCard, if you just leave the system on or play a CD game, eventually the redbook audio kicks on. Takes maybe 5 minutes, not 30 though.
-
Started with an hour or Cosmic Fantasy II, then about 10 minutes each of Implode and Super Pie Carrot Shanghai.
Now about an hour into leveling up in Ys I&II.
Oh my oh my, does it feel good to be playing a REAL turbo CD game again! :) :)

nothing compaes to the real thing.

So far system is working great. Had one issue tho.
When I tried to play Implode the gameplay music didn't play. I could here the sound effects and everything else, but no redbook audio.
I quickly pulled the disk out and tried some other games again. Cosmic Fantasy II and Ys Book I&II, Ys III all worked again without any issues.
so.. I dunno. Is there something up with Implode?

I've never had such a problem with my copy. Have you checked the settings (they're saved in memory)? I don't recall if there even is such an option, but maybe the tunes were inadvertently toggled off at some point.
-
I don't recall Implode having any kind of settings whatsoever.
-
Yea, I dunno- so far no problems with anything but Implode and now Dungeon Master. Just in the first dungeon- the opening theme music skipped a few times. Nothing too crazy, disc looks good tho. So, I guess we'll see.
Implode didn't just NOT play the redbook audio, it like started playing music then almost sounded like it *shorted* out. Like it just died. nothing else was effected, but yeah. I'll give it another shot, but I'm a little afraid to try it.... lol
Got some Chopsado's also from the great CHOP!! truly awesome little inventions! Played some Galaga 88 and Nectaris last night!! Games play perfect! Had a little trouble getting Galaga to play, but I think it was mostly due to Galaga being a little worn out.
-
Well when it quits on ya let me know and Ill fix it for ya

lol, no worries man- the system has been running REAL well given the amount of hours we've spent playing. :D

I'm in the process of replacing all the caps on my Duo. Its funny, right after I sent that Duo to you, my other Duo decided to start having sound and video issues lol. Recently I got another Duo (that nice boxed one I posted about) and it too had sound issues lol. So long story short... I'm getting REAL good at replacing lasers and capacitors :P
I just want you to know that I'll help you out if that duo decides to go wonky on ya!

I was in the mood for a little mindless action and groovy technoesque tunes, so I popped in Implode. Though it's obviously not T.S.'s problem, I checked the settings menu while I was at it; the only options are for starting speed, speedup value, starting rows, special frequency, and flash speed.
-
I'm gonna try Implode again. Maybe I'll record it and put it on youtube. Cause if it happens again, I'll probably not be putting it into the Duo ever again.
If I ever get an Implode urge I'll just pop it in MagicEngine.

I've never seen a settings menu in Implode... How is this accessed?

Press select on the title screen. You're not missing much, though, as it's just plain white text over a black background with a little bomb for a cursor.
