Title: Top Puzzle Game?
Post by: Necromancer on August 31, 2010, 06:28:54 AM
Sini had a similar poll a couple years ago, but it's time for an update.  Plus, we need something to talk about 'round here.

My votes (in order) are for Hatris, Panic Bomber, and Implode.  What's your favorite(s)?

Why does Implode count as a falling bricks style one?

Its a match-3 game?

I like Puyo the most.  I play that shit constantly.

I voted for both the Puyos and Panic Bomber. None of the others even rate, IMO. Even Panic Bomber was a bit of a sympathy vote, its not that great.

Puyo Puyo Tsu is tied with Super Puzzle Fighter IIX IMHO for best versus puzzle game ever, Saturn versions, of course. Tetris Attack (SNES) comes second.

There is always Tetris (GB), which has a zen like perfection you just can't beat, but its not so great versus.

Implode, Panic Bomber, Puyo Puyo, not necessarily in that order.

I voted for Columns, Implode, and Panic Bomber (not in any particular order.) Columns is a definite classic for me; I love the music on it. Implode is just strange and addicting for me, lol. Panic Bomber is really just lots of fun.

Funny? Not really... fun? Yeah.

Implode is simple, like Tetris on the Gameboy. Also, like Tetris on the Gameboy has that "zen like" quality Zeta alluded to.

Here's my two cents on Implode. (http://www.thebrothersduomazov.com/search/label/Implode)

I consider it one - you just control the pile instead of the blocks as they fall... er, rise up from below.

Bazaru's great, but not a falling brick puzzler.  Have you beaten it?  I'm stuck on the last level of the pyramids.

Definitely had to go with Puyo Puyo, Ryukyu, and Spin Pair.  I might've voted for Puyo Puyo II but I don't have it- so I don't know.
The other games here that I have are Hatris (I actually enjoy that one), Klax (f*cking terrible), Panic Bomber (3+ multi player modes are such shit- you can hardly make anything out), and Implode (never played it).
Puyo Puyo is by far the most fun-
Ryukyu is by far the most involving for my money-
and Spin Pair I had a good deal of fun with- and I must've liked it enough to beat the damn thing in story mode (last battle vs. the Black Wizard).

EDIT- I really feel Ryukyu is the unsung hero here- I'm the only one who voted for it?

I've only played 3 of the puzzle games on your list (Panic Bomber, Implode, and Klax).

Tetris Attack is my all time favorite puzzle game followed by Bust-A-Move. When I am at Dave & Buster's, i enjoy playing Chip Away too.

Klax is mental.  I hate the game, and the title screen.

I don't like poker/card stuff all that much.  Though if you like that crap you might like this game called Jonker my friend made.  Its like mahjong and poker.

www.hurgle.com (http://www.hurgle.com/)

I thought this was about brick/dropping games though.  Why are we talking about Implode?  Don't get me wrong here, Implodes good.  But if we're including it we might as well include every puzzle game on PCE

Is Implode not a falling brick where the bricks go upward instead of down?  Flip your screen over- it's a falling brick.  Voila.

To be quite honest-- I've never even heard of that game. I take it it's worth picking up?

I guess when I hear "falling brick"  I think of ones where you maneuver the pieces and put them where you want.  To me implode is just a match 3 game where the screen fills up.  if it were filling down, it would still be a match 3.  You dont strategically rotate and shove pieces wherever you want.

and, Ryukyu is worth picking up if you like the idea of Columns and Poker in one game.

Ryukyu is absolutely worth picking up- it's very relaxing- not something you'd want to throw against a wall- plus it's a Face game which is always a plus (I love Time Cruise II, Hani on the Road and Metal Stoker- and actually had a lot of fun beating Alice in Wonderdream)- unless the game is Cross Wiber- which is hideous.  Most Face games are at the least very original.  I also feel that matching up poker hands with the "bricks" adds an interesting element to what can be a very monotonous genre-
I guess you'd have to like falling bricks and poker to really like it though

Falling brick just means falling brick.  Tetris is a falling brick- just one where you interlock the pieces.  Other games like tetris where you would interlock the shapes would be considered something like "Tetris-style Falling Brick"... but really anyway matching colors and/or card hands etc. are also variations of "interlocking" the pieces.  You want this color one next to this color one- you want this shape next to this shape- same thing really.

Yeah, but you don't have control over where the colors end up really with Implode.  They randomly fill up.  You can strategically try to fanagle the color-removals to do it, but it just seems like a totally different style of game than all the others.  You move a cursor and click on colors and they vanish.

Actually doesn't sound like all that much fun- though I've still yet to play my copy

After reading this thread, I attempted to play Panic Bomber last night on my region modded Duo-RX and got what appeared to be an error message. Amidst all the Kanji was the word "RAM". I later tried it in my US Duo and it played fine. Does anyone know what that message means or why I couldn't play it on my region modded system?

Ummm.... since it mentions RAM, it just might be a RAM related error.  :P

I'll bet that your RAM is full or corrupt.  Do you have a Tennokoe Bank card?

I transferred all of my save files from the Duo-RX to a Tennokoe Bank card about a year ago.

So your RAM is empty, eh?  Try formatting it and see if the message goes away.

Its ok. You have to like match 3 games though.   I'm not a fan of them very much so I get bored of it quick.

I'm more of a fan of ones where you maneuver the pieces and rotate them, but I like Bust-a-Move games more.
