Title: I'm sorry but Deep Blue still sucks
Post by: DesmondThe3rd on September 19, 2010, 03:56:54 AM
I know this is old news but I recent replayed this game again after seeing Spida1a's review on it just to see if the game is really that bad and hard. Sadly the game is just as awful as I remember it with weak power ups, over powered enemies, and the avoiding everything is nearly impossible with the game's default speed. I remember beating it when I was younger but only by cheating with a Turbo Stick's slo-mo but I can't see how anyone can beat it legit. It's not like I'm some noob either since I can beat all 16 stages in R-Type, breeze through Psychosis, and hell I'm the Air Zonk World Champion and yet this game is still annoyingly difficult.
Here is a video of me just trying to play it again but I don't get too far: http://blip.tv/file/4068393

Good vid, starsoldier1!. Good thing I am not after the entire N.A. Turbo collection, because I would not look forward to this one coming in the mail.

I've beaten it "legit" and it's not that hard. R-Type is much worse.

I disagree wholeheartedly. You just haven't gotten the hang of it yet. Get used to the controls, beat the game, then tell us why it sucks.

There's def worse games IMO.

Can you please make a video on this? I tried looking around on YT and Blip to see playthroughs but I haven't found any on this game. I wanna know what happens after it's beaten twice.
Rtype is hard but if you learn the pattern of the stages it's not too bad.

Believe me I tried, I really did. I have beaten it before but not without cheating because the enemies move too fast and you lose your speed power up once your hit. The full health icon rarely appears as well which annoys me. If anyone can I would love to see it?

I might make a YouTube video someday, but as of now, I have no way to make YouTube videos.
One key to success is realizing the "other" way to restore health. That is, stop shooting. Your ship will heal itself while you're not shooting. There are stretches that are better if you just fly through and play the dodge game rather than shooting constantly. During these stretches you can recover health, even without the health power up.
Two reviews, one by me, the other by my brother IvaNEC to offset some of the bad press Deep Blue continues to endure. (http://www.thebrothersduomazov.com/search/label/Deep Blue)

Deep Blue still sucks? Damn, I thought the bad programming and design might have healed themselves by now.
EDIT: There are 16 stages in R-Type? Did it grow new levels while I haven't been playing it?

I love Deep Blue. It's mellow and the music is nice...
but, I love games involving underwater doom.
If the game played identically but was in space, I'd probably be like 'f*ck this game, kill it'
This game is what inspired some of the ideas for my Defender clone for the turbo. :)
Those are some good reviews but it also create a problem when you stop shooting and try to regain lost health. The game stops being a shooter after that.

Deep Blue is an atmospherically pleasing game, but the gameplay sucks. I wouldn't mind watching someone good play, I just don't wanna play it.

Not a fan of Deep Blue, but I still haven't given it a proper run-through. I do plan on picking it up sometime soon to just clear it for the sake of it, and so I can actually legitimatly comment on it.

Well, once you finish the first 8 stages in Rtype the game loops over on a higher difficulty. It finally ends after 16 stages.
Ah, I'm not a fan of looping. I usually just shut the game off at that point, figuring it'll probably loop forever or that the next ending won't be any different. I'm in it for the fun, not the high score. Once I've seen the ending, I'm satisfied with my playthrough. But in R-Type, I shut the game off when I complete level 4 because those last 4 levels are very boring. I've beaten it, but the fun part is only in the first half of the game. I'd love a PC Engine R-Type 1 card. The R-Type 2 cards should all be burned... how does that work anyway? Play through part 1, does it prompt you to put in card 2 (or at least put a save file or give a password or some such)? Then you beat card 2... does it prompt you to put in card 1 for the loop? I only remember the SMS version looping.

The North American version has all 8 stages in it just like the arcade original so I go by that edition and not the 2 PCE cards.

He mentioned the health regeneration strategy in his video.
Yeah, in the middle of the first stage I mentioned that strategy as well. Sadly you must really have to study the patterns to successfully avoid certain enemies and I hate the idea of not being able to shoot IN A GODDAMN SHOOTER!!

On PCE if you clear Part 1 the game gives you a password to use with Part 2. It actually makes the 2nd half a lot easier since once you've got the password, you can always start at Stage 5 with full power. You don't have to go back to stage 1 everytime.
In R-Type the 2nd loop is just for score. But in a few games, the 2nd loop is worth doing. For example in Last Resort, the stage 3 boss has a completely new attack style and animation that only happens on the 2nd loop.

Man! There is another reason I need to spend the money on Last Resort for the Neo Geo.

I've made it through the first loop of the PCE R-Type I, and yes, it gives you a password to use for R-Type II. Then the second loop of stages I-IV begins....
The second loop seems much more difficult than the first loop.

I'm also confused. I thought R-Type I (pce) was the first three or four stages and R-Type II (pce) was the remainder of the game. R-Type for the TG is just R-Type I and II (pce) in one, or what you would call the actual arcade game. I think Desmond and Rags are talking about two different things.

You are seeing it right. JPN PCE R-Type 1 & 2 = Arcade R-Type splitted into two hueys (level 1~4 and 5~8). Since you will allways have a different amount of score and probably also different weapons when reaching the end of huey 1 (level4), it will give you a password, which you then can put into huey 2 (level 5 ~) and allows you to continue with the same score and weaponry.
nothing more to say about.

Does the US R-Type loop? It is clear the JP one does not.

The JP version does loop. You get a password for 2nd loop after beating stage 8.
