I used to use YouTube on my Wii all the time, but it's been 6 months, give or take, since the last time I tried it. Now it no longer works-- it tells me I need to download Adobe Flash Player which is, of course, impossible on the Wii. I Googled this issue but couldn't find any mention of it at all. Just random other playback issues, most of which dated 2009 or earlier (at which time YouTube was working fine for me). I know there have been a few firmware updates I've downloaded since the last time I used YouTube on it.... Did one of these disable the video functionality, or is my Wii f*cked up some how? I was under the impression Flash was integrated into the browser on the Wii.

Just checked on mine and it plays the videos OK, although the screen layout is a bit messed up (and full screen was just black)

You probably need to upgrade Opera, not the Wii firmware. Youtube now sends Wiis to the mobile version of Youtube (I think, or something like that). I don't know why, but chances are the full version of Youtube no longer works with Wii.
