Title: To tree or not to tree, that is the question.
Post by: Necromancer on December 06, 2010, 09:18:14 AM
So, what do y'all do for a Christmas tree?  I have a small artificial tree, but a combination of me not giving a shit and not having the room prevents me from putting it up.

Fake, real, whatever...

As long as it's a TurboGrafXmas Tree!

I like it Henry!

I do a fake tree, but then I am lazy and keep it up through Christmas in July!

Check out this thread:  https://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=7148.15

Zonk, Bonk, 2 Bombermen, a TG16, and Adol are all on the tree... man, they are tedious to build.

The Bombermen and Doraemon are keychains.

Adol's pretty awesome!  I came Across these (somebody's probably already posted them somewhere):

http://www.harlancore.com/blog/?p=693

http://www.cubeecraft.com/cubee/turbografx16

SOURCE: Adol stars in Y's: Box I & II * (http://www.harlancore.com/myvirtualmemory/?cat=7)

(http://www.harlancore.com/myvirtualmemory/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/adol001.png) (http://www.harlancore.com/myvirtualmemory/?cat=7)

This is pretty neat. Print it out, cut and fold.

If you read the post, you'll see that TG-CD was the inspiration for the Adol "Boxpunk", but the site offers many, many other characters from various games.

*Yes, he spells it with an apostrophe. We can forgive him.

Why put a fake anything in...anything?

If you are going to spend $150 on a crappy 1/1 scale of something, why a sculpture of a tree? Why not a rocket ship or a naked lady?

Seriously, fake trees are about the tackiest thing I can imagine. Worse than giant wings on the truck decks of Civics, or clip-on ties, worse than Pamela Andersons tits, worse than a light up velvet painting of Jesus standing next to George W Bush.

If you live someplace where real trees are too expensive, or you are allergic to them, then just find some other way to decorate.

I can only think of one thing tackier than a fake tree: those plastic scrotums that truck people hang from their trailer hitches. True story, I saw one of those hanging from a C5 Vette this summer...and it was being driven by a woman.

We have also a fake. It's a very little thing (about 25cm) with some LEDs changing the colors, just for the lil :)

Here is no big chance to buy a real deal anyway, unless you rob one out of a garden or a park.

hahahaha..

My wife is allergic to the trees Zeta, was just pulling your cord man... but i dont know that fake star up top of your tree is a bit on the cheesey side, you might as well have a pair of truck nuts up there  <<shrugs>>  :P

Certainly you aren't pretending that everything star shaped is somehow meant to be a facsimile of an actual ball of cosmic plasma...

I love christmas trees but I don't have the money to buy a new one each year and I don't have the patience to water it/brush up all the stuff that falls off so I'm going plastic this year! This is mine:

Why put a fake anything in...anything?

Yeah, like fake icicles.  :P

No tree... I'm a heathen.

Although I do make fake trees myself... out of coat hangers, light strings, garland, and miniature ornaments... and I sell them for $30 each.

Real trees make the house sell great!but are messy as hell.

Fake trees are far from tacky, imo,  when decorated, you can't tell the difference. Unless you bought it at the dollar store or something, them cheap ass ones are hideous.

My kids decided they don't want a tree this year so I chose the no tree but we still celebrate option.

I've had both artificial and real trees before and I prefer the artificial ones.

To the fake tree people (Synthetic Druids?): Do you have your kids do all their trick or treating at the mall? I'm doing some research here.

We don't trick and treat. Halloween isn't that big over here.. The ones that actually celebrates the day just puts on a random costume (preferably a plastic mask worth $1 at a gas station), get drunk and goes home. :)

I sometimes celebrate like that too.  I call it "Friday".

Yeah, that's my point. :) We don't change anything just because it's "halloween".

Edit: It's like.. People willingly adopt any kind of special day as long as it gives them reason to get wasted on a tuesday. I'd prefer if we'd skip the middle hand and have the courage to vomit on the bus without an international reason. With this said, my christmas tree should seem a bit hollow, but I'm not celebrating christmas, I'm just putting shining stuff up and drink mulled wine. It's a nice break from the cold.

Idk if I'd fall under "faker" or "keeps it real" as I have and will alternate. Sometimes I enjoy the scent of pine, not coming from a candle

Dang. You guys got me there. I guess I deserve it since I slandered all over your Xmas time festivities. I stand by what I said, but I'll take my punishment and consider it fair.

I hope the trend on this forum doesn't reflect real life. The dominance of fake trees is like the death of 2D fighters and manual transmissions. I guess its the way the world is heading...but I don't have to like it.

BTW, as if the Bush/Cheney era wasn't proof enough that irony is dead, I was at the store today and saw that they are continuing to manufacture the most "for gits only" item I've seen since...since I saw it at the store last year: a fake XMas tree that is an officially licensed replica of Charlie Brown's Xmas tree from the old TV special. The TV special that mercilessly rags on fake XMas trees and year end commercialism has spawned...a fake tree, that looks like the real one from the show. One that cost $0.20 to manufacture and $20 to own thanks to the huge licensing fee.

My God how much more completely can one miss the point than that? It makes the NASCAR nativity set (the one that plays Black Eyed Peas music when you push the button) look tasteful by comparison.

$20 for a fake tree?! What a bargain (I'm not joking)! Maybe it's completely hideous though.. :)
Title: Re: To tree or not to tree, that is the question.
Post by: SignOfZeta on December 08, 2010, 08:00:42 AM
Well, it's a piece of crap. It approximates the one from the TV special, which, for plot reasons) was basically a sapling nailed to a board that couldn't even hold up a single bulb. Obviously a synthetic one of those would also be crappy by design.

We go to a tree farm and tag one out every year in the beginning of November and pick it up some time in December.  I think its $30 any size.

ha ha ha ha ha good reason to have a fake tree.  I like a real tree.  they are more work but.  nothing compares.  A real tree isnt perfect and everyone looks different.  half the fun is picking one out.  Then there are many different types of trees to choose from.  I like a douglas fer.  I also dont like fake trees cause they are too dense.all the bulbs stick on the outside of the tree.  it has no depth.  On a real tree you have so much more options and you can be more creative.
