Title: Holy **** my RGB mod actually works!!!
Post by: SuperDeadite on December 09, 2010, 02:19:29 AM
So despite my awful soldering, I now have an RGB SuperGrafx.  The picture quality is amazing!
It blows my mind how much better it is now then the old composite.  Sadly I only have a cell
phone cam, but:

Which amp is that?

Looks like njm ICs. Did you make the board?

Just by the cell phone cam that looks better.

 Well done!

How come I am the only anti-mod person on this planet?  The fuzziness of these old systems is part of the nostalgia!

However, the work you did is quite impressive.  I could never figure out how to do anything like that, and the picture is definitely sharper.

I'm REALLY wanting to do this with my TG-CD.

I haven't cracked the case yet, but it seems like it's be pretty easy to tap the CD base side of the expansion bus, run it to an amp and get RGB out. However, the thing that I'm struggling with a bit, even after reading a ton of RGB posts here and around the net is what to do for a port. I'd like to make the mod look at professional as possible, and was thinking about several options:

1. Component jacks - I think that this would be nice to just be able to plug component cables directly into my CD base, but I'd need a board like the JROK (sp?) inline to convert the RGB signal, correct?
2.DIN8 - I could then use a DIN to SCART and then a SCART to HDMI or Component converter, correct?

Also, I'm pretty sure that since the CD base has RCA for sound and composite video already, those would still be useable, so I'd really only need to tap the RGB signal and get it to the connector of my choosing?

Any suggestions on how some of you might tackle this?

I purchased the amp as a DIY kit.  Came with everything, and was easy to assemble:

Where did you buy the amp? It's a nice looking compact circuit.

Yeah, nice little kit and only 1,500yen.  :D
I bought it from here, but they will NOT ship outside of Japan. So useless for most people.

Great work on that mod. I would love to do something like this with my duo-r. I can use the scart RGB to my XRGB-2+. I did that with my AES NeoGeo and its fantastic.

Welcome to the world of OOOOoo ,Something we in the UK have been enjoying for decades .
Good gear son ,i'd use a smaller gauge (thickness) type of wire 24 awg or so ,stranded type ,so it will take up less room .

Could you ship those to the U.S.?

Possibly.  The sellers are a bit flakey to be honest.  I placed an order, they confirmed in a couple days, then I heard nothing for 6 weeks.  Then they asked me to confirm again, and they came in.  Never told me they were shipped.  I always pay by COD, so if nothing shows up, I don't pay at least.  Next time I do an order, I might buy a few extra for others, but no promises.

And for my mod, well I had it all finished, RGB, sound, everything was working beautifully.  Then I put it back in the case and the fuse blew. :(  Tommorow will get a new fuse and try again.  I think I know why it blew, but have to wait and see.

My theory was correct, now were back at 100%.  I totally redid the wiring with smaller gauge. (At first I just used spares
I had sitting around.)  Much cleaner now.  Just need to get a plug and connector to make a proper cable, but this does
it for now.  Some people may hate me for cutting the hole.  But I only paid around $30 for this SGX and it's scratched to hell
anyways.  Plus, keeping the old AV connection is nice for recording videos. :) If I can do this mod, anyone can!

does SGFX have a 5 din port? I would suggest replacing with an 8 din for future reference. $30?? Damn that kicks ass, I need to find a beatup one!

Oh and just FYI - if you can ship I would just be interested in the PCB and the NJM chips which would help on shipping.

thanks for posting up the pix.

I'll see what I can do about the amps, but it'll be awhile.  I plan on doing my Duo-R next now
that I've got the confidence, as the chip is way smaller then the expansion port.  The SGX has the
same 5 pin connector as the Duos.  tried to remove the Din, but my cheap solder sucker just isn't
good enough, to get it loose.  And I've already cut the hole, so no going back :)  I'll probably throw
a 21pin SCART connector on the front.  Should look fine.

k, since the amps are obtainable in the U.S., I guess the part I am more interested in is the PCB. That is pretty nice. Let me know what the Amps cost over there out of curiosity.

I can't fathom cutting into my SuperGrafx case, so I plan on installing an SVIDEO mod into the RAU-30. I opened it up; there is TONS of room in there.
