Title: Artist needed for MSR!
Post by: Keranu on January 07, 2011, 07:42:05 PM
As many are aware, Mysterious Song has been on the verge of completion for a waaay overdue time now and the only thing holding us back at this point are the cut scenes. Black_Tiger has completed the vast bulk of the cinematic art needed for MSR but there are still three screens needed to finish off the project for good. What we need is a sketcher that is talented enough to recreate a style consistent with Black_Tiger's work so we can implement it and finally get this game out the door!

This position would require NO animation, only digitized sketches depicting outlines of two of the main characters and a portrait of random humans scattered about. Familiarity of the 9-bit color palette is not necessary, we could handle the coloring part ourselves if needed. If anyone is interested in fulfilling this much needed task, or knows anyone that can, please reply to this thread and we will contact you with further information.

Here are some samples of Black_Tiger's excellent work as a reference.

Lets all see to it that MSR makes it to the fanbase hands this year!

Shouldn't have showed the example of the girl with nice jugs, people will be too busy beating off to draw for you.

But!  I am hoping to play this game in the near future, so best of luck on your search.

In the fashion of RPGs, the only logical explanation is magic!

I'm officially volunteering, since all it needs are digitized sketches (which I'm plenty capable of handling).  Here are some of the things I could contribute to the project:

* I would turn the lady up above into a burly man.  It's stereotypical for the love interest to be female, so this could be an opportunity to buck the RPG norm.
* I'd give the evil knight some form of throat-guard.
* Vampire fangs for everyone! (dripping blood could be turned on/off from the options menu)

Believe me brother, I've tried suggesting those ideas to the team before. They turned it down just like this adjustment I made over a year ago:

Paul has already completed the missing backgrounds for the game. Now we just need the three missing drawings to finish the cutscenes. The final builds of the Beta 3 trial will go into testing as soon as the scenes are added. Just about everything else is finished... the only other missing parts are the remainder of the French translation and some tweaks to EX Game, which will happen during the final stretch of the Beta 3 test.

Since Paypal hasn't released the funds yet, I've had to come up with an alternate way of having the disc pressed. I believe a way has been found, but I'll only know when the time comes. Also, the manufacturing won't happen here in PR but in Texas, and will be distributed by a trusted third party in Ohio.

The torches aren't added yet, that's why it looks a bit bland so far. :) It's getting some animated torches soon... Keranu already has then ready, they just have to be included into the battle program, but it's already almost at capacity so I'm in the process of optimizing the code for size.

I like this... Contemplative. Forlorn. No, seriously, I like it.

Anyway, I feel that BlackTiger was inspired by none other than Prince Erik (Beyond Shadowgate) (http://archives.tg-16.com/duo_world_0003.htm#t02). Of course, BlackTiger's work is superior. There's just something about the eyes.

Cutscene 1 has been completed... only 7 more to go. :D Well... cutscene 1 is as completed as it's going to get for now. It's not quite as nice as it's supposed to be because the first scene is way too complex so I may go back to it and try to perfect it later on, but for now, it's finished. The next one to be completed is the 7th scene.

He apparently ran into a lot of IRL problems involving his family... I don't know all the details but he's been MIA for some time now. :( Even his domain is gone now... squatted by some seedy shithead reseller.

Hey Desmond, do you want to design the cover art for the CD? Since B_T is MIA, we have no one to do it, and your style is good enough to do it. :D
Whoa thanks, I'll see what I can create with some paints on my days off here.

Ahh that's a bummer.  Well maybe someday he'll see this game completed and get some satisfaction knowing that he had a hand in it.

Yeah looking at it now the eyes can be a little odd especially on the main character there in the painting.

Just a quick heads-up... B_T finished the remaining images, so the cutscenes are finally coming together completely. There is nothing left to draw; it all comes down to code now. It will now require approximately two weeks to bring the game to final beta status. The final beta test will take place the first couple of weeks of March; RC1 is expected by March 10th. We're going to give it a full month of final runs to ensure a bug-free, quality product. Pressing will take place in April, and distribution should begin before May rolls around, depending on how manufacturing goes.

I'm going with the very same one you used. :D We already know that they can do the job, and they don't rape you on the price like some others do. The product will be ordered by, delivered to, and distributed from my trusted distribution point in Toledo, OH.

I've already gotten one person who wants to buy 25% of the order... what the hell could someone possibly want with 250 copies of the game?

Depending who it is I can think of a few things

1) Mass eBay hocking
2) resale at a local game shop
3) They like expensive coasters? :D

Yeah well I don't give the middle finger to people who wanted to wait till the thing was finished. Which is exactly why I won't open preorders again until the thing goes gold. That moment is rapidly approaching, however. Everyone who orders gets the exact same quality product... the first 100 just get a little something extra. Or should I say six somethings extra.

And ugh... that reminded me of that Eagles song. :P

Sorry but I can't exactly give out the names of those who pre-ordered. :) I can, however, say that the list contains 53 people, and comes to a total of 61 units ordered... a few people ordered extra copies. Most of the orders are from the USA, but a few are from Canada, a few are from France, and then there's orders from Ireland, New Zealand, and Austria.

I wish I knew what happened to Seldane. He was doing kickass work on our secret project, and then it's as if he dropped off the face of the planet. :( Ninja Spirit is still around but I guess he doesn't come here anymore... I still see him on Facebook though. And I think Kaminari tends to stick to the magicengine forums... he was the one who was going to do the French translation of MSR but never did it because he didn't think the game would be finished... and then Armen came in and knocked off the entire script in just a few days, making MSR the very first single-disc tri-lingual PCE game ever. :D

And (at least one) from Australia! (Though my paypal billing address was in the U.S. at the time I pre-ordered, I believe).

BTW, you are going to confirm shipping addresses before you send out, yeah?  I moved across coasts since pre-ordering...

Yes, all shipping addresses will be verified before being sent out. It's the wise thing to do since most of the pre-orders were done in late 2009, and some of the addresses are probably incorrect now.

Is Seldane even alive?  Actually, he is.  He pops in once every blue moon over at his Ancient Land of Ys boards, but, it IS really rare.  His current name over there is FM-77.  It looks like the last time he posted anything was December 8th & 9th.  Before that, I think it was atleast 6 months, to a year from his previous activity. http://seldane.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=viewprofile&user=admin

Ninja Spirit?  I thought he's still here on a regular basis...or maybe I haven't paid attention?  Kami, yeah, I think he's on ME boards....if at all, hardly any activity there.  He's probably mostly on french gaming boards.

Yeah that has a lot to do with it- after he passed away I just tried to keep my mind occupied as best I could- and in the most therapeutic way I knew how- which was diving into music.  I do intend to come back- I do miss a few of you maroons- but I feel for me to be back here while I'm NOT playing PCE is kind of fraudulent.  I don't want to be known as just some war-room guy- though surely I'm pretty good at that.  I'd like to contribute and my greater contributions were about my thoughts on games, playing them and ripping through them (though not on runin's level).  Rest assured my system and games are going nowhere- and I'll be digging it all out again when the time is right.  At the moment though I'm up to my ears in making music- playing, programming, writing, performing, recording, mixing, etc., also working on my home life with the Missus and all that jazz.  No time for PCE just yet :(

I do come and check out a few threads every so often in the interim (the one with Alex from RisingStuff finally finding his mentions on Encyclopedia Dramatica was a real hoot, and BEST YEAR EVA CLEARANCE SALE and all that lulziness)- very happy to see Ceti beat Bikkuriman World- that's a forking tough yet worthwhile game.

I'll be back- and I guess that everyone other than the "three or four people" that turbofan1 mentions can take that as some sort of threat?  Who are you again?  turbofan1- as in the first turbo fan?  What a n00b I must seem to someone as ancient and primary as you...  Or is turbofan1- as in I'm-so-goddamn-colorless-and-drab-that-I-can't-think-of-a-more-generic-name-for-myself?  I'll be back- and I'll be sure to have some fun with you in particular, sweetheart.
