Title: Midwest Gaming Classic 2011 - March 26th & 27th
Post by: Duo_R on January 09, 2011, 08:02:09 AM
Ok who's going? I am not sure myself but it would be cool. A suggestion if people want to meet up is to use Google Lattitude on smartphones.

How did last year go? Is this worth checking out?

I'll be going again this year. I know Chany went last year as well. Not sure who else is going, but there's a lot of us in Chicagoland on the boards that aren't that far away from Milwaukee.

Midwest Gaming Classic is a blast. I made some killer finds last year such as the US versions of Bonk 3 SCD, Neutopia 2 with manual, Shockman with manual and other great stuff. They also have rows and rows of arcades and pinball machines on free play for your enjoyment. I am not sure if I will be able to attend this year due to a potential scheduling conflict, but I will try my best.

I have never been to any convention since the Nintendo World Championships back in the day. I live in Indiana, and would love to go.

The largest airport nearby would be Milwaukee Mitchell airport.

So I'm going. But in years past it has been difficult, sometimes, to meet up with fellow board members.

There is also another board, and another con, that I go to, and one of the things they do is a dinner. Nearly everyone from that board at the con goes. everybody chats and eats and has a good time.

So I'm thinking we should do something like that this year. get a table or 2 (or 3?) at the nearest Perkins (or whatever) on Saturday or Sunday night after the con proper has closed.

Whaddaya say?

Well, there's a metric buttload of restarants near the convention center. Everything from fancy sit down places to taco bell. can you guys help me narrow it down?

As for time, to avoid scheduling conflicts, I figure 15-30 minutes after the con closes, so about 8:30 Saturday night, or 5:30 if we decide on Sunday.

I should really post a poll.

I haven't posted in a while, sorry about that!  :)

A lot of people get together Friday night already in the Sheraton for some food and karaoke.  It has certainly become a tradition over the years, and while they haven't announced anything yet this year, I know the DJ has already been picked and they're mulling through a few final details before making an official announcement.  Otherwise, like Guyjin says, there are a ton of places in the area.  The Milwaukee Brookfield Sheraton is in the middle of just about everything.

Hmmm, Friday night might work for just meet up and hanging out with the whole MGC family, but still I think we should try to do a Saturday night thing with just us PCFX duders and wives/husbands/kids/whatevers......

A Friday's/ Applebees type place could totally work.  8:30 Saturday night then?

I should really post a poll.

Do it.

Well, the working electricity thing had to happen sooner or later too... Running everything off of generators and AA's was getting pretty expensive!  ;)

On a side note, since I'm closer to Chicago than Milwuakee I've checked the prices of hotels and convention centers...  To say the least, if we moved the show there (which won't happen), ticket prices would likely triple and that's before we rent things like tables or have a bunch of electricians plug our "complicated" electronics in for us.  :(

More Turbo/PCE than I figured would be there last time I went.  I assume 16-bit will be there...he can be a bit pricey but has quality stuff.

As for noteworthy in town..all depends what you're looking for ;)

Last year I only saw two vendors with a large amount of it. Mad Gear LLC and one other Gentleman with some generally overpriced PCE and Neo Geo inventory.

Well, a lot of the rooms are still tenatively putting things together, so I really can't speak for the level of Turbo just yet, but in the two rooms I help fill we usually represent the Turbo fairly decently, IMHO.  This year in the Console Arcade there will be a Duo running Gate of Thunder, a SuperGrafx running Daimakaimura (Ghouls 'n Ghosts), and a PC-FX running Zenki FX.  Generally, I'll also bring with a few special requests to pop in the waning hours of Saturday.  Then again, there's always the chance that a certain 'Fest will make a reappearance this year... Never know.  ;)

As for vendors, I never get over there as much as I would like to, but yeah, Carlson's Mad Gear Games usually shows up as well as a few other vendors with Turbo stuff.  Vending should be sold out relatively soon if it hasn't already, and I imagine an announcement will be made for who will be there shortly after.

Finally, as for Milwaukee, it really depends on what your interests are.  J.R.R. Tolkien buffs will probably enjoy the author's museum filled with original manuscripts and the like.  Motorcycle buffs will probably enjoy the Harley Davidson museum.  I mean, there's stuff to do in the area, but honestly if you're anything like me you'll probably be pretty wiped out after the show and just want to unwind some.  If you're planning on staying in the area for a while, you might want to check this out (http://visitmilwaukee-px.trvlclick.com/).

In addition to these peops, there was also this guy from Germantown, WI (I can't remember the name of the store) that had turbob games, which is where I got the games that I listed on the first page of this thread. He had great stuff including Dungeon Explorer II and Might Magic 3 which were in the display case (albeit overpriced). But I got great deals on other stuff. I imagine this stuff sold like hotcakes since I got there early on Saturday. I also saw some random turbo games scattered around.

What no duo running Sapphire? :P  I'll never get to play that game two player lol.

There will be a few games a bit out of the "mainstream" this year, but over the years I've learned to kinda temper my personal enthusiam for displaying collectible games like Sapphire on the Duo+Arcade or those games with too much Japanese text like Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the North Star) on the PS2.  As I said before, I might be able to do some special requests, and Sapphire is a game I've brought in the past, but I can't guarantee I'll get everything in - especially if the show is still hopping later on in the day.

There's still a lot of things to be announced yet, and I'll be sure to bring up any Turbo-related stuff here.  :)

Was he on the far right when you walked in (past Mad Gear LLC)? I think I saw his table but was displeased with his pricing.

There was also a vendor called Trade N Games who had a small amount of product behind the case, but all of it was domestic Turbo stuff.

The place that I am referring to was on the right, a little closer to the middle than the far right, facing the opposite wall relative to the entrance by Mad Gear. He only had domestic games, so it could have been that Trade N Games that you speak of. However, most of these were TTI released games which was just what I was looking for. They were all substantially complete except without the box (per hu card games). I vividly recall seeing Bomberman 93, Dead Moon, Exile 2, Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, Vasteel, Somer Assault, Shockman, Samurai Ghost, Bonk 3 CD, Soldier Blade, Neutopia 2, Chase HQ and about a half-dozen common games.

Actually, I've done the backup of Sapphire in the past when the price was skyrocketing past $700 per copy.  It got to the point where I was scared to simply put the original copy in my system for fear of circular scratches or something, hehe.  ;)  Now I can play it on a PSP any time I want.  :-k

PM me closer to the show and if you still want Sapphire there, I'll set it up for play late Saturday given the opportunity.

Ah, I remember that vendor. I was in shock when I saw the price of that game. That was like the only turbo game that he had that I can remember.

I saw a couple of TV Sports games with the cases for $3 next to the vendor that I got my stuff from. I regret not having gotten a couple of these just so that I could use them on the later release hu card games.

Yep, the cheap copy of Keith Courage principle I spoke of last week.

I feel sorry for all of you that love that game.

A mountain of meh.

And Keranu,
Let it be known, JJ & Jeff kicks some serious ass!

Srsly?

What's good about it other than childhood memories of one's first turbo?

Well, without going into a long, detailed post: JJ & Jeff is the bastard child of Wonderboy 1 / Adventure Island, so it appeals to folks who dig those games (like me). I will confess that I thought JJ & Jeff was mediocre back in the day. I've grown more and more fond of it over the past two decades. I like how hectic, crazy and fast the game gets towards the end (requiring twitch reflexes).

Back on topic:

Too bad the Midwest Gaming Classic is in the Middle of Nowhere.

Look on the bright side - at least it's not in Jersey. *

* - Yes, I'm also trolling.

Jersey = Big Love.

Southern Canada (aka Milwaukee, WI) = Lil Love.

$20 for Saturday, $10 for Sunday.  The online pre-order allows you to get both tickets for a combined $25.

There's even a few packages including some limited edition T's, though none of the T's feature JJ & Jeff, unfortunately...

I'm being told by those in charge of this stuff that the final pre-order dates for tickets and rooms is fast approaching, with just under 2 quick months to go now before the show's 10th anniversary.

As I mentioned before, if you guys are planning on staying both Saturday and Sunday, there is a special rate of $25 for both days only available for those that pre-order.  As for the show itself, chances are we won't pre-sale out... While the show does well, we've always struck a good balance between events/exhibits and the number of people at the show.  We don't want to pack in as many people as possible and then watch things like lines and bottlenecks reach their breaking point... That's no fun for anybody.  However, pre-orders are an important process for everyone since it allows us to immediately invest in upgrades for the show this year rather than waiting until the next show.

What we can sell out of are things like rooms, our upcoming Friday Arcade: Factory to Floor Tour, and the aforementioned T-shirts.  I'm being told that our room reservations are already far beyond what they were in '10 which is interesting because more guests stayed at the Sheraton last year than we ever had in a year at the Olympia Resort.  I actually did mine this morning because working on the show so much I actually forgot I needed to get a room for me and my guys, hehe.  ;)  Rates are $89 a night and includes free internet this year, for a total savings of about $30 a night off the regular Sheraton prices.

As for the Arcade: Factory to Floor Tour, I'm not sure how many of you are interested in the arcade and pinball aspect of the show, but this tour will allow our guests a rare look at Stern Pinball's facilities as well as arcade manufacturer Par-Tec, Inc., the guys responsible for making all of those really cool Raw Thrills arcade games like H2Overdrive and the really cool Terminator: Salvation deluxe cabinet.  The tour then stops off at GameWorks to eat as well as giving you a chance to free-play any of the two-story arcade's incredible assortment of games for two hours.  Finally, the show comes back to the MGC Friday night, likely in time for your pre-show dinner as well as our Friday night tournaments and parties.

This is also a final opportunity for you guys to get one of the limited-edition MGC 10th Anniversary T-shirts.  The shirts were designed by a popular local artist and IMHO look really nice!  There will only be as many T-shirts printed as there are pre-orders, and the shirts will be available in time for you to pick them up the first day of the show.  Shirts are available up to size 3XL, which is unfortunately the size I'm pre-ordering, hehe.  ;)

On one final note...

Is anyone here interested in putting on a mini TurboFest this year?

I hadn't visited this forum as much as I once did and I therefore missed a few PM's about doing a TurboFest this year.  Now I'm being told that a lot of folks have cooled off to the idea when they didn't hear any word back from me. :(  If someone is still interested in giving the Turbo some extra love at the show this year, I believe I could give you guys a table next to the Jagfest this year.  Jagfest could probably help you guys watch your stuff so you wouldn't have to stay at the table all day, and I could probably get you guys a cover for the systems for some added security.  Any interest?  Otherwise I do have a pretty good showing for NEC in our Console Arcade, but it wouldn't be "TurboFest," and I'd love to do another one for our 10th anniversary!  :)

Later.

I had *a* response on the topic of Turbo Fest, and while I'd like to take the person up on the offer, we really need at least a table's worth of content before doing something.  So if anyone else would like to join the Turbo Fest, then I have a table ready in a prime location.  Basically, you'll be on a table right outside the door that leads to the entire museum wing, right where we park a rent-a-cop.  E-mail me if you're intersted!

FYI, most of the museum announcements will be going up on the site this week.  Yesterday was the Underdog Chamber, today is the Versus room, and I'll have announcements for the Console Arcade, Classic Gaming & Computing Museum, and the Jagfest over the next few days.  I'm willing to make a TurboFest out of at least two consoles since that's probably all you could fit on a table with two TV's anyway...  Any takers?  I think Mathius was bringing a CD system, so if anyone wanted to bring a chip-only system you'd probably be set...

Well, I've got a TurboDuo with a somewhat 'iffy' CD- so that could work for the turboChip system if you need it.  I say 'iffy' cause once in a great while it skips or stops playing music.  I planned on bringing a few things so I could totally lug along the Duo.  :)

I know its not the full blown turbofest we put out a few years ago, but its something right?

I didn't recognize many either. I am assuming Ralph Bear (the father of modern video games) is the one you remember. As for Trickman and Sushi-X; they are former writers for Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine. Trickman wrote for the "tips and tricks" section, and Sushi-X was the stealthy game reviews ninja whose specialty was fighting games, particularly Street Fighter II.

I posted this on the VGEVO forum a little while ago, but considering you guys are asking about some of the names, here goes:

[ul][li]Eugene Jarvis - The creator of arcade classics like Defender, Robotron 2084, Cruis'n USA, and the founder of the current arcade developer Raw Thrills.  More details about his and Raw Thrills' involvement in the show are incoming.
[/li][li]George Gomez - He's responsible for co-developing several classic arcade games and hardware including Tron, Satan's Hollow and Spy Hunter, as well as co-developing the Pinball 2000 platform and the games Batman and The Lord of the Rings among others.
[/li][li]Jack "Jersey Jack" Guarnieri - Veteran pinball distributor and author, he will be at the show I believe Sunday to talk about his new venture, Jersey Jack Pinball, a company that will specialize in producing premium pinball games such as their upcoming Wizard of Oz game.
[/li][li]Dennis Nordman - Veteran pinball designer responsible for co-designing games like Pirates of the Caribbean, Elvira and the Party Monsters, and the upcoming Wizard of Oz.
[/li][li]Joe Balcer - Veteran pinball designer responsible for co-designing games like The Simpson's Party Pinball, Star Wars Trilogy, and the upcoming Wizard of Oz.
[/li][li]Greg Freres - Veteran pinball artists responsible for games like Medieval Madness, Revenge From Mars, and Monster Bash.
[/li][li]Keith Johnson - Responsible for designing the software behind several pinball classics like Revenge From Mars, The Simpson's Party Pinball, and Lord of the Rings.
[/li][li]Roger Sharpe - Veteran pinball designer responsible for co-designing games like Cyclopes and Global Warfare.  He's also well known for helping to legalize pinball before the New York City Council based on his play.
[/li][li]Jeri Ellsworth - Famous designer and electronics hacker best known for her "computer on a chip" design for the TV plug & play Commodore 64 controllers.  She will unveil her "As Seen on TV" pinball machine at the show as part of the Pinball Wars exhibit in the BenHeck.com Experience room.
[/li][li]Ben "BenHeck" Heckendorn - Famous designer and electronics hacker best known for his portable game systems, controllers, and even an amateur film maker.  He will also have his Bill Paxton Pinball as an entry in Pinball Wars exhibit, as well as a first look at his Lost pinball machine and upcoming "Tesla VS Edison".
[/li][li]Josh Sharpe - President of the World Pinball Player Rankings and an extremely good player in his own right.
[/li][li]Marty Goldberg - Programmer and Designer with Legacy Engineering Group, co-founder of the Midwest Gaming Classic, and my co-organizer in the museum wing of the MGC among other things.
[/li][li]"Trickman" Terry Minnich - Hmm... Never heard of him...  Odd.
[/li][li]Ken "Sushi X" Williams - Nope... Never heard of this guy either.  Gonna have to ask Dan about these bookings...  ;)  Hehe, I think you'll see these two EGM alumni in the VGEVO room amongst other things if memory serves... ;)
[/li][li]Ralph Baer - "Father of Video Games" best known for, well, creating this whole video game industry with his "Brown Box" game console.  His exact involvement with the show will be announced at a later date.
[/li][li]Jim Schelberg - Veteran author, publisher and editor of the venerable PinGame Journal.
[/li][li]Lloyd Olson - Veteran author and owner/operator of one of the oldest arcades in North America, SS Billiards in Hopkins, Minnesota.
[/li][li]The International Game Developers Association, Wisconsin Chapter (IDGA) - The IDGA will once again hold a meeting at the Midwest Gaming Classic which I believe will mirror the open format they held last year.  The IDGA's members include several local video game developers including those at Raven Software.
[/li][/ul].
...Lot of pinball names, and believe me, in the pinball world a lot of these people are like Miyamoto and Cid Meier.  Keep in mind this is an incomplete list and I'm aware of at least a few more speakers and a company or two that is planning on doing something at the show.

It looks like we are going to have maybe three systems. So if we each bring a controller or two we should be good.

Even of you PM'd me with partial lists and questions go ahead and send me a nice condensed list, so I can get all this straight. I need to send a email to John with all this laid out.

Hey Mathius, it might be a good idea if you guys bring along a couple of turbo taps if you plan on playing 5-player games. Take it from me, those suckers tend to be very finicky if you plug in more than 2 controllers. At last year's Turbo Fest, two of my taps were going batty, but luckily turboStar brought his along which worked fine.

If you're planning on pre-ordering a two-day ticket you have about a week left.

Blue BMW -- Thanks for fixing my priorities.  The problem for me is whatever I budget for a month for games, I almost always exceed by the middle of the month, and this think happens near the end

DHG Hunter -- I am going to try to preorder soon, I am trying to move money from one of my online accounts in time, but if I can't like turbo mentioned above what am I losing out on?

Brookfield, WI is roughly an hour and a half drive from the Chicagoland area, you don't need to stay the night, unless you want to go both days. One full day is more than enough time IMHO. If you have the time, I strongly urge you to go. It's a great opportunity for you to purchase turbob games at great prices, not to mention so many great games to play.

I'm not gonna lie to you that is a pretty brilliant idea, drive up on Saturday morning and leave on Saturday night.  Kudos to you chany you area thinker.  This will likely be my plan of action if I go.

Sorry folks, I've been under the weather the last few days...

Pre-ordering is most important if you are going to stay there for two days.  If you're just planning on staying there Saturday, then yeah, there isn't much incentive other than the fact that pre-ordering tickets allows us to improve this year's show rather than next year's show, Lord willing.

Personally, I'm always surprised when people say they can see the entire show in less than a day, but it all depends on what and how much you're there to see.  I have heard - and agree - that Sunday has historically been the slower of the two days, but IMHO that's the best chance to really play some of the games.  Sunday is also going to have an entire day's worth of speakers/panels this year which we haven't done in the past.  I think Ben Heck will be on Sunday, I know Jack "Jersey Jack" Guarnieri will be there to talk about his pinball start up, and some other stuff has yet to be announced.

If this is your first show, then yeah, I can understand taking in one day, but there's a good chance you'll come back for two days the next time.  ;)

Later.

I don't know if this would create more problems, but I would simply tell the TSA agent, "This here is the love of my life. Treat her gently, I don't travel without her."

I'm sure you'll be fine.  :)

All these boycotts do is affect the "little people", reducing revenue from local businesses, etc.  This won't affect the governor or any other politician.  So because the goverment makes dumb decisions, your "cannot give tax revenue (sales, hotel, Gas, restaurant(?)) to a government who would do this" attitude only hurts the normal person..the government could care less.  Take it out on the people that did nothing wrong effectively.

@Guyjin: Fine. Boycott WI. Buy your gas in Minnesota, pack in sandwiches, sleep at the IL state park, but whatever you do just bring a sign to protest while you're at the MGC. If you're this vehement about the issue; as a native Wisconsinite I expect that you will not only go but be taking part in at least one of the protests with my home state and all of the union employees (cops, firefighters, DOT workers, Ironworkers, Assemblers, teachers, etc.) who are seeing their contracts eviscerated. If you're really that appalled, please do something about it and make a difference.

... if you do happen to grace the fair state of cheeseland with your presence; I'll see you there with my union card around my neck, a sign, and a Milwaukee Brewers hat. And I'll buy you a beer, as long as it's brewed locally. Maybe we can discuss the finer points of Xanadu or RTYPE while standing up for the Middle Class.

Tom Morello from Rage to join us.  :P

He was there last week.

LMAO...  I'm sorry, I don't mean to laugh too much, but I think you're in the dark on something...  The Midwest Gaming Classic is actually half owned and operated by a Milwaukee teacher and his teacher wife.  That's right, Dan Loosen and his wife are both teachers and caught in the middle of this.  LOL...

By doing any sort of boycott, you would actually be harming the people that you're trying to stick up for, hehe.

Sorry, and I will try to never talk about this again here, but I hate politics.  As much as you may want to believe otherwise, politics often blind us from realizing that neither side is entirely in the right or entirely in the wrong.  ](*,)  IMHO we need to get away from labels like democrats and republicans and find the common ground that makes us all American (at least for those of us in the USA, hehe.)

Listen, I realize you said what you did with the best of intentions, but you can come to the show and know that you're actually helping a teacher and his family if you want.  As for the show itself, politics can be checked in at the door with your coat.  This convention is about a celebration of gaming and gaming communities like Turbo Fest.  :)

That's right, Matt, Joshua, and Bryon are now friggin' famous!  ;)  Seriously, if you're bringing something to the fest and you'd like me to do a name drop for you too, I have no problem with it.  Those three names were basically the ones I had thus far.

Similarly, if you see any issues with it, either e-mail me or yell at me here on the forums and I'll try to get it fixed.  :)

Sheraton... $89 a night is pretty good and you can't beat being able to walk downstairs to the convention in your underwear.  ;)  Too bad I'm not a hot Maxim cover model.  :P

Anyway, I'm sending out a few last-minute items for the Turbo Fest and Jagfest here in a bit, so if you've been e-mailing me lately, you should expect one soon-ish.  Also, in case you guys are looking for show updates, you can of course get things like event guides and maps on www.midwestgamingclassic.com (http://www.midwestgamingclassic.com/), and you can also visit the semi-official thread over at our media partner, VGEVO: http://www.vgevo.com/site/showthread.php?t=285469.  They've also got a bunch of threads for things like the karaoke party Friday night, VGEVO party Saturday, and whatever else.

That said, I do try to post as much Turbo-related items as I can here, but for time reasons there may be a few things I'm unable to comment on.

Joshua is planning on bringing one too. I'll leave this as last resort. Thanks!!!

yep, I'll have my projector.  it can do some pretty decent sized screen!  :D
I've got two spare copies of Ldis for prizes if desired.
How 'bout u sell me one instead!  LOL
Lol you can have one

Ok, BMW!!  You are by far the most generous human being I've ever encountered!!  What did I find in my mailbox this afternoon?  A really amazing copy of L-DIS!!  Holy cats man!!  I HAVE TO REPAY YOU SOMEHOW!!!  LOL

Thank you again my friend.  This has found a nice warm home and will receive many hours of gameplay.

Gotta admit I had to look L-DIS up...

http://www.pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/L-Dis.htm

Anyway, yes, TV's...  I had implied that way back when, but I probably should have made special note of that since it is so critical.

I might be able to provide you guys with two Commodore monitors with composite jacks (yellow and white), but we probably won't know our TV situation for another day or two yet.  Josh has a projector, so that would leave you potentially with three TV's on I believe three consoles.  Any more than that and you guys are probably going to run out of room real fast.  Of course, if you guys can still provide a few TV's, then things would be much more certain.  :)

I can bring a TV!
it's a little small, and only does mono sound though, is that cool?

anyway, i'll be bringing all my games, in case anyone wants to trade or something, along with a multitap, 3 pce controllers, and 1 turbo controller
anything else i should drag along?

also-
ONE WEEK COUNTDOWN COMMENCE!

Yes bring whatever TV's you can.  A few years ago, we had an issue where we only had brought one TV (2007 I think?) and we had to bum a few off poor JD...lol, but yeah- I'll see if I'll be able to snag along a TV as well, the only problem, is it will be crazy small (13in).

So, we'll see.  Just bring 'em if ya got 'em.

Any chance someone can tell me what the controls of Zenki are for the PC-FX?  I'm under the gun to try and finish some stuff up, and I don't have time to pop the game in and see what every button does.  =P  I know the top buttons are your special attacks, but beyond that I don't remember the bottom row.

Yes, and I certainly hope you feel "empowered" when you're sitting at home in Iowa boycotting a Milwaukee teacher and his teacher wife.

Well said DHG

ESPECIALLY when it's (at least in part) run by TEACHERS...you know one of the MOST vocal opponents of the bill you're standing against.

As stated before these kind of boycotts HURT the very "middle class" that people are "protecting."  I don't see the hotel clerk, local gas station worker, or restaurant waiter being one of the "BIG $ corporate" types that you seem to have it in for.

P.S. That article was about NEW laws they were trying to enact..not the older ones already started.  Plus $15-150...that's a ridiculously HUGE range...playing with fuzzy #'s FAIL.

Ah well ...miss out on a good time that has NOTHING to do with unions/the contentious bill (well except the people that run the show :P).  Let me know how your dad's union feels about shitting on another union (that I'm sure they are supporting) during this time. ;)

I'm boycotting it because those sonofabitchin' Wisconsinites nectarsis and turbostar are going to be there.Or maybe because I can't get away from work.

Find a better excuse not to go, Guy.  Much like voting, your boycott means absolutely nothing, especially so now that the anti-union law has been killed by a judge (dredd).

Nice to meet you all.  It was packed! I wonder what the attendance numbers over the two days will be? I overspent.  I picked up:

Hit the Ice
Tiger Road
Champions Forever Boxing
Shockman w/ outer box
Samurai Ghost
Dungeon Explorer (sealed)

Hit the Ice NES Repro

Gargoyle's Quest (gameboy) (box + book) no game

Some Japanese Basketball Game for Saturn From TV Animation Slam Dunk I love Basketball?

Castlevania Chronicles (PSOne)

Warriors of the Eternal Sun (Genesis)

Resident Evil (Saturn)
Bomberman (Saturn) I overspent on this one, I made to many passes through the merchandise room and it caught my eye

I should have picked up Somer Assault, but i decided not to and ended up getting to Bomberman instead, Oh well.  I bet if it wasn't so packed and i really looked at everything I would have spent more, but i didn't even really bother w/ NES and SNES stuff.

My friend beat me 17-14 in Hit the Ice, then I beat him 25-22.  Next we boxed on CFB and I don't think we will be doing that again but i won. and Lastly i passed the first level of Tiger Road, but i was to tired to continue.

All in all it was a fun day for me and there was some nice stuff at decent prices.  Working 2nd shift I couldn't tell you the last time i was up at 7am, but I had alot of fun.  Everytime i walked by the Turbo Fest i forgot there was a projector on the back wall and I was ruining someones game.  Eventually it would blind me so I had to move.

It was nice meeting you guys! I didn't see this thread before I went to the show, but as soon as I saw Air Zonk running on a TV in the hallway I knew I was in Turbo territory. That was a really cool exhibit you had there and I hope it has shown lots of people what gaming on the Turbo/PC Engine is all about.

I found a lot of interesting stuff at the vendor hall this year, especially at the table run by the Japanese guys in the corner. They had plenty of good deals on Super Famicom carts and had some PC Engine cards too, plus the copy they had of Policenauts for the PC-9821 definitely caught my eye but I had to pass on that one.

Thanks for the pictures so far.  I'm going to seriously try to get there next year.  It would be a nice motorcycle trip from Minneapolis if it was in the Summer.
What's the VGS?

The VGS is short for the Video Game Summit. It is a retro gaming convention that is taking place on July 16th just outside of Chicago. We will witness the return of Turbo Fest!! I will make a posting about this event sometime during April. I didn't want to overshadow the awesomeness of MGC. :) The VGS is smaller than MGC, but they have a great gaming area with ample space.

Well, over the course of the trip me and my girlfriend rolled over my odometer, so the grand total distance traveled: 1,167 Miles.

f*ck yes.

all in all, a freaking sweet weekend.
finally grabbed me an arcade card, got to obey with some of my fourmmates, good times.
didn't see too much US turbo stuff at a decent price though, which is unfortunate.

Don't worry, don't worry. I'll bring my calculator.

Since space will probably be a concern we will probably have to consider sharing with someone. That's if we even get a room at all.

I did get stuck in MKE for an extra day, could not get out Sunday. I guess thems the breaks when you fly stand-by. Snag'd a hotel near the 'port and caught the 6:30am flight. For last weekend, starting Friday I went from work->airport->con->airport->work...now I'm home, time to do my regular Monday movies in the gHT (G for ghetto). I sweat I'm gonna get on this bitch more.

Hey folks,

Glad you guys had fun at the show this year!  I'm sorry about being at the door like that (I seriously didn't think that door was open that much last year), but they had to move concessions and that pushed things further down the hall.

Attendance won't be known for at least another week as Dan & crew count all of the tickets sold, but my guesstimate would be that our Saturday attendance was either on par with last year or a bit off due to the snow in the morning, but our Sunday attendance was far greater than last year's.  Overall I'd be shocked if we didn't break last year's attendance records.

I have *NEVER* seen the museum so packed as I did this year.  Especially in the Console Arcade...  It was great to see so many people enjoying the room, but it is a bit bittersweet because I wish I had gone with the game-centric format years ago.  It seemed like people really like moving through the arcade and finding the game they wanted to play as opposed to finding the platform that may or may not have the game they are interested in.  The Versus Room was also packed... So much that the Halo: Reach network was constantly encroaching on the space for WWF Wrestlefest and Saturn Bomberman.  Pac-Man Vs. and X-Men Arcade also did surprisingly well.

I'm still majorly tired following the show... We got there Thursday night and some of us pulled an all-nighter already then.  Friday I was up until 5:00 AM and we still didn't manage to open everything in the museum until 11 AM.  Wanted everything PERFECT this year for our 10th, but regardless that was a lot of work this year.

That said, I announced months before the show and I'll reiterate now that this was the last year that I'll be able to do the show in the capacity I've been able to.  Things are increasingly looking as if I'll find a job away from the area following school, so while I'll still likely help organize and become an "enabler" for others at the show, transporting what feels like a ton of game consoles, games, and TV's every year is unfortunately not going to be possible.  That means that rooms like the Console Arcade and the Versus Room will likely change a great deal or all together next year, and hopefully the Family Game Room will also go back to its original team.

One option may be to turn the Die-Hard Gamer Console Arcade into several community tables like Marty has done with the E2M Museum.  Basically, he only brings a few systems now and decorates the room while several other people and groups bring the rest of the content in that room.  If that happened, Turbo Fest would likely move into the Console Arcade room or whatever we called it.  Whatever the case, we'll talk about it and let you guys know hopefully in the next few months.

I got a chance to hit the vendor hall for a much longer period of time this year, but I still ended up grabbing a bunch of imports that I don't get a chance to see very often.  I mostly found games that I wasn't familiar with and thought they looked like fun, but there were a few finds that I'd been waiting to pounce on:

> Samurai Deeper Kyo (PlayStation) - Actually not all that familiar with the anime, but this fighting game looked a lot like Samurai Shodown, so worth a shot.  Gets good reviews...
> Angel Eyes (PlayStation) - Remember seeing the arcade briefly as well as I believe a Super NES version.  All-girl fighting game that's supposedly really good.
> Nekketsu Oyako, aka "Hot-Blooded Family" (PlayStation) - Beat 'em Up that launched alongside the PlayStation.  Brainless, but fun from what I hear with great graphics.
> Sokko Seitokai: Sonic Council (Saturn) - "Mostly" all-girl fighting game again that's not half bad.  Think I remember this one in the arcade.
> Suiko Enbu: Fuuun Saiki (Saturn) - Data East fighting game that I'd never heard of.  Has one of the characters from Fighter's History Dynamite in it as well.  Supposedly pretty good.
> Kakuto Hao Densetsu Algunos (Super CD)  - Reminds me of Revengers of Vengeance but apparently made by the folks that did Asuka 120%.  Decent from what I hear, plus it is Turbo.  :)
> Psychic Killer Taromaru (Saturn) - Yeah, my "big" purchase from Carlson.  ;)  Always wanted to pick this one up, but I figured this may be my last chance for a while so finally made the splurge.  In case you aren't familiar with it, this is one of the most notoriously rare and desirable Saturn games out there.  Pretty good 2D action game with great graphics.  Think of it as a 2-player co-op Shinobi with a 360 degree firing range.

Anyway...

Great to meet everyone there, and I hope to see you folks again next year!  :)

Later.

@DHG Hunter- We had such a blast this year! The guys and myself are already forming ideas for next year's round-up. Can't wait to see what comes of this!

If you need extra systems next year that are not NEC related please ask. I can supply Neo-Geo, Super Famicom (thanks to MGC), Saturn, etc. if need be. Just let me know. :) Thanks for this opportunity John! This has been an experience of a lifetime for me! I'll never forget it!

Hehe, LaserActive didn't go up mainly because we had two cars packed full of stuff and that was about the last thing I felt we could squeeze in there since it is so big.  ;)  Actually, I offerred it to David for use in the Underdog Chamber, but he didn't want it so it stayed home this year!

Later.

John-Sorry about us not being able to hang until the very end. Blue, Turbostar, and turbografxfan had to catch a plane, and nectarsis had to drive them to the airport. Turbostar had a family to think of, and as for myself I had a 5 hour drive back to Indiana. I am hoping next year will be different in that regard.

EVERY state has some kind of game/anime/scifi convention, plus if one ever dies, there's usually another one cropping up.
btw, does anyone else think that it would be a good idea to map out all of our users?
hell, maybe we could find the "perfect" place for a forum get together, something between all of us.
I'm in nebraska, bout a 10 hour drive from MGC, but it was totally worth it.

Let's just say I didn't pay him $350, but I ended up picking up all of that other stuff and that dropped the price rather significantly.  :)

Anyway, I got off the phone with Dan last night and I'm officially transitioning to another role and no longer doing the giant game room by my lonesome next year.  Plan is that I will continue to stock the Versus Room and organize the museum in general, but that's about as far as I'm willing (and able) to go now.

Since I'm not stocking the larger game room any longer, we'll of course need some people to step up and fill it.  Turbo Fest would be one thing that can go in there, but we also need a lot of other game consoles and games since the room is supposed to fill in everything from the NES to PS3.

A few of you mentioned that you would be willing to provide game systems and games next year beyond the Turbo... Well, since it is fresh on the brain now, I'm interested in learning just what stuff can be covered right now.

If you're willing to bring something next year, feel free to message me or post something here.

Later.

I could easily bring Saturn/ Turbo DUo/ and Atari 7800 goods for showing!  I'm actually contemplating bringing them all for this years VGS to test out how hard it would be for me to bring and maintain that many systems at a time.

And JD, anything else you think I could do to help would be fine with me.  I felt so powerless on Friday night when you looked like you were dead tired with so much more work to be done.  I would totally be available to help out with setting up/ carrying/ play testing/ transporting consoles/ 'cades/ games the day before, and early Saturday morning.

I was looking for something to do, Christ TurboFest was pretty much set up around 8am Saturday anyway!  :)

Cool... I'll keep it all in mind and see what's possible for the future.  Max (guy with long hair that did the tournaments) will likely help out as well with some of the newer-gen systems.  From the sounds of it, we may be able to cover most of the systems from this year if not all!  :)

Later.

Keep us posted. :) Turostar sounds like he really wants to try his hand at hauling around goodies. Way more than I am able to. Him, along with the rest of us, will always be around for backup if you need us. :)

And here's what Bemby really found inside that DUO he opened at MCG:

But due to his technical uberskillz and amateurish basic knowledge of nuclear physics, he could manage to disharm the dangerous device and therefore saved the whole MCG with all its obeying members

Now we have to find the one who set us up the dirty bomb :!:
