Hey Everyone,
Just got my account activated not long ago on here, thought I would post my first now. So wat brought me here?
I had a Turbo when I was young, and I recently had a nostalgia bug to play some Turbo Grafx 16 games maybe 3 weeks ago. I downloaded an emu and some roms to bring some memories. Oddly enough. one of the roms was Street Fighter 2 CE, which was my favorite game in the early 90's. But everyone here knows, that game didnt exist in North America for the TG16, so I sold it and bought an SNES. To my amazement, the PCE port of SF2CE is impressive.
That being said, the bug hit to get one of these units hit, and playing SF2CE was a necessity. So Google brought me here.....
So in the last 3 weeks, what has happened?
I bought a TG16 locally, used, with Keith Courage. One controller. Standard North American Combo
I ordered SF2CE from someone on ebay, 13$ I think
I ordered some game bits on ebay
I ordered some IC's and built a region mod pcb (i dabbled in projects like this in the past, so I was comfortable with it)
I received my SF2CE Hu 2 days ago
I received the game bits last night
I opened the console and installed the mod last night
Everything works. Let the collecting begin!
Thanks you all for contributing to this forum, it helped this new collector get started. I'll see if I can share some pics with you all to show you what I did.

hi and welcome! Get Shockman.

Thanks TurboStar,
I will have to look at that game, I know i didnt own it. I only remember owning Aero Blasters, Bonk series, TV Sports hockey and legendary Axe.

Welcome, and congrats on your newly-completed project!

Welcome aboard the crazy train! Now ya need some extra controllers (two of which should have six-buttons to play Street Fighter 2 properly), a tap, and Bomberman '93/'94 and Dungeon Explorer so you can tap into the multiplayer awesomeness.

Yeah, already browsing for an Avenue 6 pad. As far as multiplayer, most people I know wouldn't understand why I'm playing with this, but for the sake of collecting, I will probably pick up some extra controllers and a tap. Don't think the wife will ever play.

Time for new friends and duct tape for the wife.

Well since you can play PCE hucards, you need you some

For starts :D
Man having access to US and Japanese games is a gold mine.

Now what you REALLY need is a CDROM add on or a Duo system.. :P Once you break into the CD world you never go back.

Welcome to teh Asylu..er.. Forums :)

One more thing you'll need to do is to something about being able to use the 6 button controllers on the TG16.
You can grab converter cable, or mod a Duo/PCE multiplayer tap so that it fits in to the TG16 controller port.

Let me fix that for you....

There is no such thing as a converter cable that allows you to play PCE/Turbo Duo controllers on a T-16. It's the other way around. You would have to mod a PCE tap or controller by switching out the wires and using a T-16 compatible end plug. There are some guides that can guide you through that process if you are feeling adventurous and/or consider yourself a techie.

Well, outside of getting some games, my next step is an AV mod, so I can connect this thing anywhere.
I have an old Commodore 1084s ( I used to use it to test my Arcade JAMMA boards, so I needed a true RGB monitor) so an RGB mod is probably coming soon.
I feel some guilt in butchering the console, but I guess I can always buy a complete boxed one, should a steal come along. Anyone else feel bad about it?
-
Yeah, an RGB mod is the only real true way to play the PCE/TG. Atm I'm just using S-Vid though :(
But you better get yourself a PCE DUO asap, and do all the mods on that. The restriction of not being able to play CD games will make you unhappy very soon.
-
Welcome aboard! :) Make sure you get Blazing Lazers/Gunhead along with the aformentioned Dungeon Explorer for the rockin', atmospheric tunes.

Welcome, madman :)

I'd only feel bad if the console was in absolutely pristine condition. Otherwise, do whatever you must do to enjoy the games.

Welcome! Er, I'm opposite of you topic creator. Trying to be rid of TG rather than starting it.

Well at least unless I move to Japan. Then there's a treasure trove of PCE goodness, no import needed! :)

What's wrong with importing anyways ;)

I'm too used to having access to numerous dirt cheap games available locally. That's what I always grew up with.
My fault. I need to control myself better. I tend to get impulsive by buying costly or obscure consoles without researching them first. I did that with PC-FX and Neo Geo also. Might be the case with FM Towns Marty as well, I've got one of those in the pipeline...

And what's so bad about having a PC-FX? Doesn't it look WAY awesome sitting on a shelf? Mine does!
-
Nah, this is worse than it sounds. I should be looking for help in not buying such systems to begin with.
-
If I was you I'd be looking forward to that Marty.

Welcome to the boards, madmansmith. I wouldn't feel bad about chopping up the old TurboGrafx if I were you. If it was a Supergrafx or U.S. Duo I might, but those TG16's have seen worse and there's still plenty of them. When doing your RGB mod, consider carefully where you put the ports; don't locate them where they'll interfere with a Turbobooster or CD attachment if you ever want to add stereo sound someday.
I'm also going to throw one vote on the side of not buying a CD console right away. NEC made a really cool family of consoles, all with slightly different flavors, characteristics, and idiosyncrasies that can be overlooked if purchased simultaneously. Turbochips feel different than early CD's, which feel different than Super CDs, and so on. When I bought my Turboexpress after years of owning a Duo, I was surprised how much it changed the games - it breathed new life into some and made others boring or unplayable! Likewise, when I got my Supergrafx from Dreamstars, I sat around that first day playing Aldynes and Battle Ace and it really did seem like an entirely new console. Same thing with the Arcade card.
Buying everything at once ruins the fun almost as fast as downloading every rom in one day (probably why Roy "Big Money" Vegas crashed and burned so fast). It's like putting a whole pack of gum in your mouth: awesome for ten seconds, then the flavor's gone and your jaw hurts.
You probably have at least fifty killer games at your fingertips with just the hucard/turbochip library, so, unless you're an RPG fanatic, take your time and enjoy the TurboGrafx-16 for a few months. The price inflation we've seen over the last six years has tapered off and there's plenty of time to worry about broken lasers assemblies, potentiometer calibration, CD system cards, different controller ports, $100 games, and keeping track of your save files on three different Tennokoe Banks later!
